I wasn't expecting to hear for another few weeks, and I just happened to check my emails and they came back! I clicked on the link, and it showed a first cousin match and a second cousin....both active members!!! Im still trying to process this information, and have to figure out what to do next. They will likely get some sort of notification on their end as well, so I had better be prepared to receive an inquiring email. I am not a subscriber to ancestry, so I think I'm going to go ahead and get a monthly membership so that I can view their family trees. for those who don't know, I'm an adoptee who decided to see if I have any biological family out there. My parents have both passed, and I was ready to see where I'm from. *UPDATE* OK, so since I've received my results, I plucked up the courage to email the top two matches to request more information. I was up front that I was adopted, and just looking for any information that they were willing to share. The next day, the #1 person emailed me back saying that if I were to give them some names, dates, and locations that they would be willing to assist me. The #1 person only shows up on Ancestry as D.P. and managed by someone else. When he emailed me back, he signed his name just slightly different than in his ancestry name, and he also told me where he lived. So I googled him, and I found an online newspaper obituary that he wrote a condolence to, but in his name he added "Albert" to the name in quotes. So, being nosey, I did a facebook search using Albert Lastname, and I found him! I also then realized that the D.P. in his ancestry account stood for his wife! I looked all through their friends lists, and there were SO many of the same names that also showed up in distant matches on my ancestry account....so I am sure these are the correct relatives. (I feel like such a voyeur ) (I hope you're with me so far) Here is my question: I have a copy of my original birth certificate, and I have my birth fathers full name, and my birth mothers full name, including maiden name) and there isn't a single person on all of these profiles with a last name even remotely close to either of them. I even found an online obituary for D.P.s older sister and it listed all of the siblings. I'm missing something and hope there is another ancestry sleuth out there that can help me out!

Wow! That is so cool. I just sent in for my kit. I didn't realize it hooked you up with actual people. I thought it just told you your heritage, like what nationality. Now I'm really excited.
Good luck!!!!

My advice, get an email specifically for registering with ancestory. THat way, if you end up being contacted by someone they don't have an active email you regularly use.

Good luck!!!! Yes, it will connect you to actual people. They are shown your username so if you don't want your real name out there to be searched in other ways create a username much like you did for here. Then that is about all they see.

Exciting times.
I hope your experience is as my friends was--she found a family that embraced her. The birth mother had died, but her siblings knew a sister had been adopted out, so they were waiting to find her and hoped ancestry would do it--and it did!

Ancestry is having a sale through August--$69 (usually $99) I was thinking about doing it (my Dad was adopted).

I get it, there is a need for privacy, but at the same time a bit frustrating. The closest match is listed as immediate family, and I'm guessing it may be an aunt or an uncle. The profile is managed by someone. I'm guessing that means that the family must have one member managing trees for multiple people. I want to make contact, but I need to carefully choose what I want to say upon first contact so as not to upset anyone.

Good luck to you! Just to let you know, active members do not get a notification on a new DNA match through email (at least I don't, but it may be something you can set up in the system) - so don't be surprised if they DON'T reach out to you. I am extremely active, but hardly ever go to the DNA page as it's extremely unhelpful - I have literally thousands of second and third cousins as I'm essentially related to everyone in New Mexico. Usually when a thread here talks about DNA, I end up looking at my page to compare it to something and am surprised that an aunt or cousin is now one of my matches. I have a big, big family - so sometimes it's not obvious to me who a particular person is on my list - but with 47 (KNOWN) first cousins and I don't even know how many second cousins - it's not even on my radar that someone who popped up on my list is an unknown family member. I just wanted to give you some context, so that you're not hurt or surprised that they don't contact you. I hope all goes well!

The initials aren't always by the person doing the family history. Ancestory shows only initials for the dna of people who do not have a death date in the family tree. It can mean they are still living or it can mean their date of death hasn't been entered in that family tree. I understand how frustrating that must be to you!
