The number of scammers and thieves is astonishing. The cost to businesses (and therefore to the consumer) is incredible. For example, in our store, we work hard to keep losses to less than 1%. 1% of our annual till is $100K. Yes, that's right. $100,000 is lost due to theft. Just in our store, in one year. So that is why stores have to unfortunately be so careful. my niece's boyfriend works in retail and the corporate office considers themselves LUCKY if they can keep shortages to 3%. and this is not a mom pop store, this is a chain in malls. that's a lot of shoplifting they tolerate as part of the cost of doing business. that's insane!

Just had a guy last night come in, go to a men's accessories department, load up on items and bring them to the front and say he didn't have his receipt and would take a store voucher. $180 worth of items. That is so insane. My DH asks me what something is happening that is so apparently scamming, why don't you call the police. Well it so much more difficult than that. It's not like someone is walking out of the store red handed. Like the Money Order dude. You can't accuse him and you can't call the police because really he isn't 'doing' anything at that moment. But "we" know what he is doing and thinks we are stupid but we can tell him no you can't get your $900 money order to use to buy a gift card which will then be used for who knows what and then returned back to the store for cash.. (I made that all up).. Then it makes me think everyone that comes up for a refund is wanting something for free. Which isn't the case. One lady bought a gift card for $25 and lost it right away. She came back to the store to look for it. Never found it. We gave her another one, for free. She came back a day later and said she found the original one in her purse which was stuck inside a book. Now to me my first thought is that most people would have just kept it. (and I don't mean MOST.. but after seeing all this scamming that is my first thought).. I told her that was really nice of her. I gave it to the head cashier and she laughs.. she is like I have no idea what to do with it! HA.
