You can use the subway with a bus transfer to get to Laguardia. We had purchased 7 day metrocards and noticed a poster in a subway car saying you could do this. We looked it up online and figured it wouldn't be that hard. We saved at least $50 doing that instead of paying for a cab. It was really easy. The bus stop was right by the place where we got off the subway. So if you are buying metrocards, you might want to consider it. Enjoy your trip. I took my first trip to NY in July. The city is really amazing. You'll enjoy it.

Try airbnb.com, I've found nice rooms on there for $100 in the city. Totally illegal in NYC. (Google it) you can always grab food at LGA before you leave the airport

I'm so glad you decided to go in.
I was going to add that I can't imagine any hotel in the LGA vicinity would have decent room service food anyway. Yuck!

Pam, I live 15 mins from there and can say there is nothing near the airport to walk around or do. I would likely order up room service but there goes some of your $70 savings. The area is not safe for by yourself. I would spend the money and go into the city. Anyone else? I'm a New Yorker and completely agree with this. IMHO you can walk around That area of Manhatten quite late on a Friday night.

I bit the bullet and made my reservation near Rockefeller for Thursday night. I'm so excited! I tried getting the front desk at the weekend hotel to match the rate of the hotel a couple blocks away. No deal. So I booked the one a couple blocks away and am able to cancel until the day before. So I'll try the weekend hotel again when it gets closer and see if I have better luck.
Thanks again for all the tips!
Pam

Thanks again for all the tips! Pam I would definitely call them again the week before If you aren't already a Rewards points member for the weekend hotel, register now. Just as an example, the Kimpton Hotels just emailed their "stay in the next 7 days rate" for members and I can get a midtown Manhattan room at The Muse Hotel for $197. If you go to their website, the least expensive room is $319 this weekend and $549 for October. They have four hotels in Manhattan, and a rewards member can get a room at Ink48 for even less ($142). I don't know what your budget is, but every price point/hotel chain has a rewards program and will send out last minute deals to fill their rooms.
