The heels are impractical, but that FLOTUS hat is incredibly tacky. Why?

I have a difficult time imagining that she's going to be anywhere where the shoes will matter. I'm not trying to make some sort of a crack. I just sincerely don't see her slogging through a foot of water, Harvey or not. I agree - I doubt that either one of them is going to be anywhere near any large puddles or a speck of mud or muck today. But I did see that she changed into sneakers when she got off the plane.

Not heel to die on. Isn't there a story about the queen mum always dressing her best when going out to bombed out places in London? Something about if the people saw her looking her best then they knew things would be alright? Indeed - King George VI and the Queen in 1940: Not Melanoos...but not sweets sweats and tennies either. I think you have to look at the historical context too, though. Back in the 1940s, women hardly ever wore pants and wouldn't dare to leave the house unless fully dressed "properly" in a skirt, pantyhose (when available due to wartime shortages), and dress heels.

I wish I could walk in those shoes! I would give anything to add 4 inches to my 4ft 11 body lol... I can't even handle 2 inch heels so I'm not going to judge. That's my height and I have TONS and TONS of 4" heels and higher. I'm quite able to walk in them. The highest heel I have is 6". Actually, I trip more in flip-flops and flats vs. heels! I am short and wore 4"-6" stilettos all my life up until I had hip replacement. I worked in them, on my feet, 8hrs a day. I could run in them, jump rope in them, walk on gravel and on soft turf. If you wear them for long enough they just become part of you. I love, love, love stilettos. I have to wear a lower heel now and I don't like it. ETA: I would have worn those shoes to a flood.

Because people are dying and losing everything they have and she's focused on advertising her self/brand? Yes. To me it's unseemly to be at all preoccupied with your title and your "place." During the very first weeks of this administration, Mrs. Trump used to end her tweets with #PoweroftheFirstLady. She wasn't doing much - living in NYC and flying to Florida when a head of state couple visited. But she'd post photos of walking to dinner or visiting a garden or school with a wife of a foreign leader and attach that oddly gratuitous hashtag. She hadn't EARNED any power; she was simply proclaiming that she posessed it. (Maybe she came up with the hashtag idea herself; maybe her husband suggested it; maybe it was a second language/cultural thing. Regardless, as soon as she hired staff, it disappeared.) So, this "Look who I am" theme now continues with stuff like the hat. For me, the entitlement and branding in those actions is off putting - or, at the least, myopic.

Don't care about Obama's flip flops, don't care about Melania's heels.

I really don't have an opinion about what Melania wore, I just wanted to mention about the historical context. Seeing that picture reminded me of my Aunt who was from that generation and how she got dressed to the nines every time she left the house. There were many women like her who were raised that it was improper to do anything else.

My grandmother always wore a house dress and heels (comfortable ones, but still heels) even when cleaning house. It was absolutely important to her to look well put together at all times.

And that photo of the Queen as she was then, was total in keeping with what most women wore in the 1940's. I have photos of my great grandmother with a hat on at the seaside on a day trip. What someone up thread said about the clothes and looking Londoner's in the eye wasn't about clothes. What she famously said after a bomb landed in the grounds of Buckingham Palace was " Now I can look the people of the East end of London in the eye" meaning that in a way she was glad that they had experienced the same fate as the people of the East End which bore the brunt of many many bombs. Both she and the King had refused to abide by the advice of the Government to leave London for safety. Her mantra was that if others had to stay the least they could do was to stay as well.

I don't care what Melania wears/wore as long as she's not naked, I don't care what Michelle wore coming off Air Force One while on vacation at the Grand Canyon and I don't care that Obama wore flip flops or a tan suit. I know this thread is mostly in jest but I think you (general you) are petty AF if you truly care/are outraged by these things.
And I don't think that FLOTUS (of any political stripe) visiting WHILE a disaster is ongoing is helpful in any way, shape or form unless she's personally handing out blankets and food at a shelter or helping flood victims off boats. With the amount of security needed, staying out of the way is probably the most helpful thing a First Lady can do. Raise awareness from the White House.
So no, I'm not questioning where Michelle was 3 days after Sandy.

Im thankful that all we have to complain about is her choice of shoes to get on the plane in and what she had on her hat. I'm thankful than we've shown as a country we can come together and be there for each other regardless of any differences. The governor of Texas had this to say, The coordination at the federal, state and local level has been as good as any tragedy that we've ever seen in the United States.
Our talks began before the hurricane even hit Texas. From the White House, to his cabinets, to FEMA, to all of his leaders, we have planned and prepared for this days before the hurricane even came.
The president took action swiftly, early, coordinated with the state of Texas in a way far superior than I've ever seen in a hurricane tragedy. Texans are genuinely appreciative of the way the federal government and the President have stood up and addressed the needs of Texans. We are suffering here in the state of Texas and what the President is doing is helping Texans.

why even bother with the bomber jacket if you are going to wear those shoes? she might as well have worn a beaded jacket. I don't understand why she is wearing a jacket of any kind. It's summer in south Texas. Enough said.
