So up the road from me, not far is a business that plays music OUTSIDE during the day. It's not obnoxiously loud (but you can hear it at least a block away) or really annoying music (mostly 90's pop). I can't even hear it most of the time (but I can right now which made me think of it). This business sits at an intersection and you can definitely hear it when you come to stop, turn, drive through, etc.
I'm trying to decide if it's freaking rude as hell (especially if you're across the street from them or next door - I'm neither), or if it's absolutely brilliant. A way to make people look in the direction of your business.
I thought this would be a great poll for the peas.
ETA: This is speakers outside, not coming from inside their business.

It would probably bother me, so I am gonna say major A-hole.
I think its one thing to play it where you only hear it when you're at their business, but when you can hear it a block away? That moves you to the annoying category.

I don't want to hear music outside of any business or home. Or, car!

If it's that loud from a block away, imagine how loud it is when you're sitting in their parking lot.
Definitely *not*brilliant. It's keeping people like me away.

I chose A-hole, but my opinion is tainted. I used to live in an apartment building situated behind a Ford dealership. The mechanics kept a radio on. During the day I seldom heard it. However, they had the habit of leaving it on when they went home. In the quite of nighttime it was freakin' loud. It happened so often, and the service manager ignored my complaints enough, I ended up contacting the city's code enforcement officer. It got better after that, but never truly stopped. To this day I won't own a Ford.

What type of business? Not that it really matters. If it's loud enough to be heard "up the road", it's too loud to listen to at the business itself.

I wonder if that level of noise is legal?

I wouldn't go to that business, ever! If I could hear it from my house I would be getting that music shut down.

I wonder if that level of noise is legal? Probably. There was a bar on the main street across from our neighborhood. They had an outdoor area that would have bands play on weekends. The first 4 streets in the neighborhood could here the music with all windows shut - some couldn't here their TVs over the music. They called the police who came out with decibel meters... music was just under the limit. Crazy loud, but legal. Lucky for them the bar closed. Now there's a new seafood dive bar in there, no loud music but good food! SaveSave

I think it depends on the type of business.

I’d go with somewhere in between. It’s going to alienate some people. Some people will like it, but it’s probably not going to drive business. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s a “major a-hole” for doing it, but I don’t think it’s going to benefit him in the long run and it may cause him problems. So... I’m going say pointless and stupid.

Doesn't your town have any zoning laws? That would never fly here. Businesses can't even have "loud" looking signs. They all have to conform to the quaint New England character of our town.
I personally find other people's music that intrudes upon my personal space annoying and rude. But then I'm a curmudgeon about the insidious creep of media into public spaces, which I also find rude.

I voted Meh. It would not bother me as I like to hear music and don't mind it anywhere anytime.
However if you can hear it a block away, and it isn't someplace like an outdoor water park or a restaurant/car hop place where you eat in your car or would expect it, it is probably too loud for most people.

What's the purpose of it? I can't see how loud music from a block away or at the intersection isn't going to make many people just turn their car into your business, even if they liked the music. Personally it would annoy the F*** out of me and I would avoid it. Noise is now one of my migraine triggers sometimes, even before it would still would have annoyed me. @justlizzy kinda of ironic that you won't own a Ford because of the mechanics music, like bad marketing in a roundabout way.

Cide enforcement issue. I would turn them in.
Btw, this is why I won't shop at shop-co. The store manager is into heavy metal. And plays it at ear blasting levels. The store is nearly empty.

I like my music, but to me it would be super annoying...kind of like the incessant bell ringing at Christmas.

Reminds me of one of local the Sheetz gas stations. They play their music so loudly over the gas pumps. I don't know if they think they have to compete against the noise of the traffic or what, but if you are in the car you can't even have a conversation with someone right outside the vehicle pumping the gas.
Ultimately my guess is that if you can hear this business's music a block away then there is a decent chance it's too loud for at least some of their customers.

I did go out a bit ago and I think they turned it down because it's much quieter.

Most Saturday nights they forget to turn the radio off when leaving. We don't live close enough for it to bother us, but have heard it driving by at 2am. I feel bad for the people that live behind it.
There is a Chevy dealership in the next town over, that I've only been by during normal business hours and I can hear their radio going through closed car windows with my radio already on. I find it annoying and distracting!

We have a Toyota dealership across the street from where I work that does the same thing. We are on a super busy 35 mph road, so I don't know that anyone driving would even hear it, but as a customer walking around the lot I would be annoyed. We can't hear it from inside our business because the road traffic is too loud, so it doesn't bother us thankfully.

I voted "meh", because while I don't find it super annoying, I know that if I were a driver passing by (which sounds like the target audience), I'd be looking around for the dumbass blowing out their eardrums, not encouraged to stop and shop. So it's not brilliant marketing either, IMO.

Background music is not uncommon at many businesses, but the key word is background. I would not expect it to be loud enough to be heard the way you describe this one.
Part of the danger with businesses playing music is that personal tastes in music vary a lot. Just as many people might be turned off as might like it.
And I despise when a restaurant or other business has the music so loud that I cannot easily carry on a conversation with the people around me. Unless I have come to your venue FOR the music, keep it subdued enough to not interfere with normal interaction.
