Maybe it is because it is recent history. I think that's the root of some people's discomfort. (Not really "offense.")I still have an "Ooh. Too soon!" reaction. I've actually wondered what survivors and family/friends think of the expression. But that's me...and I'm sure it reflects my age and my memory of the event. Lots of people on this thread, and especially internationally, don't have that connection. It's just something they've inferred the meaning of from context. As Elaine says, we haven't adopted idioms based on any other other mass killings...school killings...disasters. There is that expression "going postal," though... |

Victims of the holocaust had no choice- victims of Johnstown had a choice. Apples and oranges Umm. No, many did not have a choice. They were forced to drink the Kool-aid (flavor-aid) if they didn't do it voluntarily. They Congressman and his entourage gunned down that started the whole event didn't have a choice either. The children definitely did not have a choice. I think that ignorance of what actually happened at Jonestown is making this thread more and more disturbing for me. I have never considered whether this phrase is offensive or not. I never use it. However, elaine is correct. Most of the victims of Jonestown were murdered. Forced into drinking the poison. Especially the children. |

Elaine - she admitted she did think they were deceased which I think is understandable. But she did not contact admin or report them.

I will go out on a limb and state that when I first looked at the picture that Elaine has reposted, I DID think those babies shown were not alive. I don't think they clearly look like "happy" babies and if that picture was posted along with others that showed the deceased victims, it would be easy to think all of the pictures were of victims no longer alive.
I'll also say that I don't want to look at pictures of the victims that show them dead, so I won't be clicking on the links for those. And I think I can understand why the admin pulled them, even if they aren't graphic.

But it wasn't harassment when Elaine-Wohlgemuth Shilling elaine contacted me off the board, made the comment she did in the Police Speak Less...thread and insisted #notLauren meet her in LA? Had she not been behaving the way she did in that thread I honestly would have not brought up her contacting me offline because I was unsure if it was really her. If the admin wants to intervene she should have done so when Elaine-Wohlgemuth Shilling lied in those other threads. |

And it's also not harassment for Elaine-Wohlgemuth Shilling to have tagged me in this given the history she claims we have. When zookeeper accused me of spreadsheet keeping in the form of likes elaine began liking many of my posts again after this history she claims we have. When you lie and I bump the threads to prove you are a liar you can't call it harassment simply because you guys hate my presence here. I welcome admin intervening |
