I hesitate to ask but Im really stuck. I am in a class that until this morning I had a 100% in. I had to turn in a topic choice for my final project and he hated it. Hated it so badly my grade is now at a 65 and I have to pass with an 80% or higher. He gave me a list of websites to aid in picking a new topic and have a two page outline done by Saturday, however more than half of them my computer thinks are suspicious and doesn't want me to open them. I can't afford another computer melt down during school so Im very cautious about what I open. The class is a diversity class. The topic selection rubric states to choose a local or global issue that pertains to problems in diversity and should be something that relates to one of topics to be discussed in the class over the next several weeks (sociology of diversity, biological diversity, cultural identity, etc etc) So after brainstorming with a few close friends we came up with something. Except apparently we didn't. Ive never had this problem. Usually the instructor either loves what Im writing about or they tweak it slightly. I have never had an instructor flat out hate an idea before. Im lost. His comment is that I need to pick a new one that identifies and defines a specific diversity problem and also propose a solution for it and provide justification for the solution I am proposing. I hadn't even gotten that far in the project as this was just turning in a topic for the paper (my writing style is very different than how this program wants you to do it and I struggle a lot with it) Im not telling you what I picked for two reasons: 1..I want to see if anyone else brings it up and 2. Im freaking embarrassed over such a low grade for it. I just need ideas to point me in the right direction. I figure the peas are the ones to go to for help here. Should have started here to begin with Im not looking for the answers to the problem etc, just topic ideas. I can pull the rest of the requirements from there, but I need a topic to start with before I can do anything else.

what was his problem with your topic? My gut reaction is to be annoyed and bothered by your professor. Teachers who can't put their personal opinions to the side when judging persuasive writing shouldn't be teaching. The writing should be judged on its own merits, not on the political stance of the professor.

My first thought was something to do with immigration in Europe (or a specific European country as I'm sure that different countries have different policies/programs to help migrants adapt to the new environment).

Could you go with a generational diversity issue? I work in health care and I see that so many younger patients demand care, demand pain medicine and for that to work immediately and have very little patience nor compassion for others. In the elderly population I see quite the opposite.
I'm not saying write about that but there is a vastly difference in the way we interact with these two groups of patients.

Mentioning European countries, Bulgaria has a population problem. It's projected to have the world's fastest shrinking population but is not interested in having any immigration not even educated, skilled workers. The first thing that popped in my head was honey bees. Lack of biodiversity included large scale farming has impacted the health of the bees and the decrease in pollinator's have a potentially critical impact on biodiversity. One of those classic negative feedbackloops with the added benefit of a problem with critical food implications.

Teachers who can't put their personal opinions to the side when judging persuasive writing shouldn't be teaching. The writing should be judged on its own merits, not on the political stance of the professor. I do get that feeling with him sometimes based on things he has said in the discussion boards, but shrugged it off because I was doing fine in the class. Could you go with a generational diversity issue? I work in health care and I see that so many younger patients demand care, demand pain medicine and for that to work immediately and have very little patience nor compassion for others. In the elderly population I see quite the opposite. I see the same in my job. I work primarily with the elderly population but every now and then I get someone from the younger generations and their views on what they expect out of their healthcare is much different. That is a very good point! From your statement above that I have bolded, I'm confused when you say he doesn't like your topic. To me, it sounds like from his comment that your idea wasn't fleshed out enough, and that may be where the low grade is coming from. No he flat out said the topic would not work for this course so I am not even going to try to convince him otherwise. I could. I very well could write this paper and it would fit the guidelines, but since he has said no, Im not even wasting my time. I followed the rubric for the assignment and the required worksheet for the assignment. I answered all the questions given, none of which included a discussion on solving the problem. I do know that is part of the final project but I haven't gotten that far yet into my writing process. If he wanted the topic selection guidelines to include the rest of the information, then it should have asked for it or made it clear it needed to be included. But that is neither here nor there. I just have to find a topic he will approve of. Mentioning European countries, Bulgaria has a population problem. It's projected to have the world's fastest shrinking population but is not interested in having any immigration not even educated, skilled workers. Perhaps there is a topic there, rather die off than diversify? That would be a very good one and that question is just what he looks for in things. I had no idea this was going on either so I would learn a lot which I like to do in these projects.

Germany in particular is trying to replace its aging workforce with immigrants, that might be something to look at for comparison when you go into your "solution phase" - if you choose this topic of course.

This seems like a "low hanging fruit" kind of project. I wouldn't go so far into the weeds with a topic and would pick something obvious. Because of my interests I would choose women's equality in pay or LGBT issues. Most likely, I'd go with transgender stuff because of Trump's recent tweet.

Hard to believe that choosing a topic could drop a grade so much. Does the syllabus really give it that much weight.
I have recently seen articles. (on Facebook, not a great source). About trans people being discriminated against in the medical community.... not receiving adequate attention in the et, for instance. I don't know how much data you could find, but it was something that I had never considered.

I'm another one that is shocked that turning down your topic idea could drop your grade 35 points. Is what that specific part of what the project is worth listed on the syllabus? Did you answer all the info in the rubric given for the topic choice aspect? It seems like he gave you a 0 for your choice and didn't grade what you turned in.
I say that because my son (granted, high school) missed turning in two papers on Monday that were worth 50 points and those 0's dropped his grade about that much. But that's for not turning it in at all.

It’s week three out of 8. It’s not weighted as heavy as upcoming assisngments so as long as I pick an appropriate accepted topic I have a good chance of passing way over the required 80%. It was the most heavily weighted project to date which is probably why it dropped so far. I try not to play the numbers game too much but this morning just has me all twisted. It is very possible I overthink. It’s been mentioned a few times

I definitely think you should make an appointment with your professor and talk this out. Better to do that than get frustrated and worried.
Something just does not seem right, is there some info missing? Should this paper be about a topic covered in class and is your topic not? Has the professor gotten into specific examples about - The topic selection rubric states to choose a local or global issue that pertains to problems in diversity and should be something that relates to one of topics to be discussed in the class over the next several weeks (sociology of diversity, biological diversity, cultural identity, etc etc)

I always find it is better to follow their directions specifically. If you pick another topic they don't like, and they ask you if you went to those sources it won't go well for you. Do you think he wants something local to your area? Did you have a solution? Perhaps it was the solution he didn't like? I think it is generally better to go with something you know about. So I would hesitate to pick an issue in a country you are not familiar with. What interests you most about this class.. how does it relate to your community? Any idea what other people are doing? THat might give the peas some ideas.

I wrote that ^^^ post before I read the whole thread... I thought I had.. lol.'
What about diversity in theatre. and television
I recently read an interesting article about a group in Australia putting on In the Heights, which is a show where most of the main characters are latino and they are doing it with an all white cast. There was a big uproar about the Oscars not including performances by POC.
Lots of examples out there.

ETA: ktdoesntscrap has a good idea..... Not too many are complaining about 'Hamilton' and the multiracial cast, Hamilton himself is Latin/black, oh my!

The problem with 8 week classes is that all involve a final paper based on the objectives and topics that you discuss during the 8 weeks. The final paper is due the 7th week. You are writing the paper before you even get through most of the classwork so a lot of times you are winging it. Im only 2 more classes away from being done so Im used to the set up. The difference is that at the beginning of my program you had a week between class sets. This summer they changed that and you no longer have the extra week. I used to use that week to dig into the final projects more but its gone so readjust I must do. Its just one of those hoops you jump through and so far Ive managed it well. I would check out the sites the professor gave you. Can you go to the library or someplace where you can use a public computer. I do not have time to hit up the library either. I work full time and school full time etc. Im very retentive about following the assignment descriptions and rubrics. I print them out and keep them close by and check them before turning in my final submission. I have learned if you follow those you do well in classes. This time was a failure. I did exactly as his instructions stated, followed the example given, and checked in with the rubric for that assignment. He wanted more. Okay. He wants something different. Okay. I just have to find it. Once I find it, Im not worried about the class anymore. I won't even go into how we as students have deadlines for turning things in but there are no deadlines for grading work and getting it back to you (program wide issue, not this class specifically) but again, Ive gotten this far with really really good grades so just a hoop you have to jump through. Nobody has posted what they are doing. I haven't seen anyone do that in any class. For what its worth, nothing about my classes interest me. Im doing the degree under protest So I am not engaged in any of my classes short of turning in the requirements and moving on. This class is no exception. Gotta head to work Thanks for all the ideas. Perhaps write about women and modesty within the culture and how it affects medical care. Just this week I heard part of a NPR story--Muslim women are reluctant to get a Pap smear because the physician is male. The person doing the story pointed out that it is not a religious statement from the Koran, but actually a cultural belief. Consequentially many women are not getting the health care to prevent cervical cancer deaths.
I have no idea if this is true or not--but years ago I was told Chinese women would not visit a male doctor. It created problems in health care when the woman immigrated to the U.S.

What about the problem of diversity in STEM careers? Some high schools are really pushing programs called girls who code. There is also a need for more females to go into engineering.
BTW, if you followed the rubric then your grade should not be that low.

How about women being underrepresented in toxicology and biomedical research? Women's HealthDoes the diversity aspect have to relate to humans specifically? I was thinking about lack of crop diversity (biological diversity) and the potential effects it would have on humans locally and globally. Here's a quick article: Crop biodiversity

Definitely make an appointment or stop in and talk to your professor. My husband teaches at the college level, and he will give the student who shows up at his door a lot more consideration than one who doesn't when there is an issue.
