We went to a wedding once where they had a hot dog and taco bar. It was a reception that was held a few weeks after the wedding, but it was at a nice venue and they did a nice job setting up the serving area. Lots of toppings, good quality food. Everyone at my table agreed that it was freaking awesome.

When I got married, 29 years ago in NEPA, most of the weddings were family style. Lots of ethnic food like meatballs, ziti, halupki (gag), etc. There was always a cookie table and usually cake and ice cream for dessert. We are in that period of life where we are attending a lot of weddings for our kids' friends and friends' kids and plated options seem to be the norm around here. Usually a beef, chicken, and seafood or vegetarian option. At my nephew's wedding this spring, it was buffet with a crap load of options! That was in a different area though.

I really only go to Indian weddings (DHs side), and the food is pretty similar. It's always buffet as that is the only way to feed so many people. His sister's wedding last year had close to 1000 people. I don't think I have been to an Indian wedding with less than 500 people. There is usually salad, pasta salad, samosa, rice, naan, tandoori fish, a few vegetable / paneer curries, a beef dish often and butter chicken. The food is only ever as good as the butter chicken The last wedding I went to had this insane dessert table, with probably 70 different cakes and desserts. It was massive(ly delicious).
