I went off it for 18 months and just had a regular soda a couple time a week. Then my sugar levels went up. I am back to drinking a diet something maybe five times a week, but I drink a butt load of water and plain iced tea also. I just need that carbonation/caffeine mix too. I have a soda stream and love the diet orange, but I am sure that isn't great for you either. I am that person who has tried many times and never feels like it tastes icky when I go back. It tastes delicious!

I quit drinking diet soda years ago. When I first gave it up I drank water with a little lemon and a pinch of sugar in it. Little by little I cut out the sugar and lemon and after a week or so I got to the point that all I drink now is plain water. The small amount of sugar got me through the initial withdrawal. Now I don't like diet soda at all and don't know how I ever drank as much as I did.

Having chemotherapy cured me of my Diet Coke habit, I now drink cold bottled sparkling water.
A bit drastic I know, but 3 years later and I still don’t crave Diet Coke or any other pop
Well done to all those that have quit and good luck to those who are trying to limit or quit

I gave up Diet Coke (in a can only though, Diet Coke on tap always tasted gross to me) several years ago when I gave up HFC and fake sweeteners. I switched to seltzer water and it wasn't so bad at all. I do wish restaurants would catch on to the trend and sell seltzer water at pop prices, they could easily do it since they are just mixing seltzer with syrup, would even save them 3 cents a cup. My local mini theater does that and I love it. Wish fast food places and other theaters would catch on. Not that I eat out a ton, but when I do I would like seltzer water. I went to a pizza place recently that didn't charge for "tap" water from the fountain, but it was actually seltzer. Woohoo! Yeah, I filled that tiny cup up 1000 times. To the OP: I quit nearly 22 years ago, and I was completely addicted before that. I wanted to be free of aspartame, and I wanted to not be addicted to something. I actually tapered off because I was afraid of going cold turkey. So, I started having a cutoff time (no DC after work) then backed the cutoff time up. I finally was down to 2 DCs in the morning. Got that down to one. Then I reduced the amount I was drinking until it was ridiculous (felt like I was doing a shot) and I stopped. I did not have any withdrawal headaches or anything, and I lost the craving pretty quickly. And then the idea of drinking one became disgusting. I went several years without drinking anything but water or black tea, but then I found seltzer and started drinking plain seltzer because I did miss the fizz. So, there is hope! I do not remember any changes in my health, but I was pretty young when I stopped. Good luck to you!

I drank Diet Pepsi then Diet Coke for many, many years, multiple cans per day. I stopped about five years ago, after I got a kidney stone, and then another. I made other changes at the same time, so I can't say for sure that it was only the diet soda that made the difference, but I haven't had another stone since I stopped. I had a sip of DD's Diet Coke the other day and it tasted awful! I can't believe I used to drink that swill.

I gave up diet coke on 7/11/11. Decided to give it up for 100 days. When I was getting close to 100 days my daughter asked me if I was going to drink it after the 100 days were up. I pondered it because even after 100 days it still sounded good to me. I decided to wait and see. The longer I went the more I wanted to keep my streak alive. I have in the last 6 years had a couple of diet cokes and they just don't taste as good as they did when I was addicted. I basically don't drink any pop at all anymore.
When I was quitting I was used to drinking a diet coke everyday after lunch - "to get me through the afternoon". I initially substituted Vitamin Water just to have something to drink. I eventually just changed to water.
Oh, and my motivation was that I have osteopenia which is early osteoporosis - low bone density. My doctor said that Diet coke (caffeine) was bad for bone density even if you are taking Calcium. My grandmother had osteoporosis and I didn't want to go down that road if it could be avoided.

I wasn't an addict per se, but I drank it just about every day. There certainly were days where I had several. For me, it was just finally acknowledging that while they may or may not be bad for you, they definitely weren't good. My single biggest helpful hint was not keeping them in the house anymore. I'm a SAHM, and it was easy to grab them too often if they were in the fridge. I will have one if I'm out and it sounds really good, but that is naturally self-limiting. I keep iced tea in the fridge at all times, and Hint water, so if I just need something with flavor, I can have it.

I stopped drinking diet coke and all pop almost 2 years ago. I've had 2 Vernor's when I felt sick. When at a restaurant or fast food I'll either get water, iced tea or nothing. I drink a ton of water during the day, decaf coffee or tea whenever.

I have! It's been 2 years, and 3 months. I quit cold turkey, one day, when I realized I hadn't had one, and didn't have a headache. I decided to try, again, the next day, unless I got a headache. I didn't, and I haven't had one since!

I never considered myself a soda addict, but I did drink Diet Pepsi with dinner every night. I quit drinking anything carbonated over 10 years ago and never looked back! Just gave it up cold turkey one day after ordering a fast food meal that came with a ridiculously large soda. I didn't supersize or anything, just the drink that came with the meal. I drank like 2 inches of it and decided I wanted to give up soda and threw it away. In the beginning I just substituted water or iced tea whenever I'd normally drink soda and days turned into weeks which turned into months. I will say your taste buds do change, after like 6 months I had a sip of soda and it tasted like poison! I have no desire to ever drink soda again. It's gross.

Yep, I was addicted to it from my 20's until I was 40. It was my "coffee" in the morning and I drank them one after another until bed time. I got the stomach flu that lasted a few days and with it a horrible headache. I realized the headache was probably from the lack of caffeine from the diet coke (I couldn't keep anything down so diet coke was out of the question). I decided rather than ever going through that awful headache again, I was going to quit diet coke. I haven't had another since. It's been 8 years. I think I ordered one at a restaurant a couple years ago with dinner as a treat and I took one sip and couldn't stand the taste. I now drink water all day, every day. I have a Camelbak 32 oz filtered water bottle that I keep with me at all times, so tap water is never an issue. Good luck on quitting! I hope you don't have any issues and that it's easy for you!

Diet Mountain Dew is my drink of choice and I have had a really hard time giving it up. I have other drinks that I like but I still end up going back. This summer I stopped drinking it for about 6 weeks but one at a wedding led to drinking it all of the time again. I need to stop for good. It doesn't ever get to where I think it tastes gross (even when I gave it up during pregnancies). I wish it would.

I quit like for a month one time and I did feel soooooo much better. And! O dropped like 10 lbs without really trying. Then I started again because I just didn't feel like water one day. Then there is eating out, if you order something at fast food, what do you get to drink? I don't want to drink all the sugar ones either. Restaurants, you can at least get a glass of water, but most fast food joints give you a little wee cup of tap water that tastes bleh! I drink at about 2 of the 16.9 oz bottles a day. I'm trying to psyche myself into quitting again and I will, so this is a great reminder that I need to set a stop date! I had a boss that they thought he had MS because of the symptoms he had and now figure it was aspartame. I can’t quote a small bit on my iPad but wanted to say and I’m not picking on you but a lot of people don’t think of this... if you don’t want the tiny cup for water so then “have to”order a soft drink, then go ahead and pay for the soft drink but ask for water. Problem solved! A lot of times they won’t charge you but even if they do it’s not a great loss and you’re still drinking water not soda!

I quit soda about 5 years ago, and my drug of choice was a Route 44 diet coke from sonic, daily. I did not have any withdrawls from the diet coke itself, because I promptly substituted that w/ tea. Shortly after that I gave up all processed food, which was hard (not withdrawl wise, but because that means you have to cook everything lol) I recently fave up sugar and that had the biggest impact on my health. I am your age and have RA.

I quit in 2011 and have never regretted it! I was drinking 4-5 cans a day, and the more I drank, the more I wanted. It was tough for a few days, but became easier every day.
I drink Ginger ale when I am sick, not very often, but no other soft drinks.
I wouldn't advise trying it yet, but Lacroix water is good to me (orange is my favorite), but I limit myself to one per day or less.
Hang in there, you can do it and you will be very glad!

I’ stopped drinking DC about 2 years ago. I was still craving it for about a year. I didn’t have one though. I do now have one every now and then (maybe 3-5/yr) and still love every sip of it. It hasn’t become gross tasting to me. And I didn’t lose any weight or feel any different after I quit. Oh well.
I only had one a day and yes it was hard not to cave in but I did it. You can too! Just make up your mind and go for it. I’m sure you’ll feel so much better!

I gave up all pop/sodas on July 22, 2016 and haven't had one sip since. Over the last year I have fallen off the low carb WOE in social eating situations but the one thing I feel strongly about is not taking another sip of pop. I had a slight tension headache after a week into it and that was about it.

When I hit my 50th birthday I decided to get healthy. I was 186 pounds and sick of being fat and feeling terrible. The first thing I did was quit my addiction to Diet Coke. I quit cold turkey and switched to water. In my house we have well water so when we moved in 22 years ago we noticed the previous owner had a water cooler and got water delivery with 5 gallon water jugs of spring water. We've continued this. It is amazing tasting water. Quitting cold turkey in my opinion is the best way to quit because while it may be difficult for the first couple of weeks, after that your cravings do taper off and after the first month those cravings are gone. If you never touch soda again you will start to crave water instead. This is what your body needs and wants. I think water tastes amazing now-so much better than Diet Coke ever did.
Another thing you might try is to put lemon slices or orange slice in your water if you really miss some flavor. This all natural idea is healthy and a lot of people love to do this. I would suggest doing it this way rather that buying the overpriced "flavored or essence" water that is being sold. It's much healthier to take a real lemon or orange and slice it than to buy a flavored water product-if in doubt read the label and see what's really in it-probably a lot cheaper too.
There is a page on the web about "25 practical uses for Coca-Cola, Proof it should not be in human body" and one of them is clean your toilet. If it is that caustic can you imagine what it is doing to inside our bodies? I'm so sorry I can't do links on this computer, maybe someone else can link it for me?
I wish you great success OP as you go forward in your quest. I know you can do this! Read that webpage and it will inspire you.

I have tried to quit cold turkey multiple times. I can't seem to do it. I'm going to try limiting myself to "W days" = weekends & Wednesdays.

Anxiety attacks caused me to switch to caffeine free Diet Coke, because I couldn’t get it everywhere I switched to seltzer and haven’t looked back. I had one Diet Coke this summer and had heart palpitations for two days after.

I gave it up years ago, but then got addicted to Arizona Stress tea and added lemonade. Sooo much sugar- gave that up 2 years ago. Now it's just water and butter coffee and occasionally alcohol.

i wouldn't say it was an addiction as i went days without it but if i went out, it was always my "go to" drink. if i was driving somewhere and thirsty, it was a mcdonalds drive thru diet coke - can't beat fountain diet coke!!
then i listened to a podcast by stuff you should know about artificial sweeteners. i swear it just turned a switch in my brain. i was convinced i could taste the chemicals. i had one recently and it didn't taste good at all. maybe it would work for you!

At least 8 glasses a day. I think anything that doesn't make me truly happy gets the adjective butt. And the filters though my body quickly, so maybe butt load IS a good descriptive word.

I haven't given it up totally but now I only drink one a couple of times a month, instead of several a day. I had to go cold turkey for a couple of months. Now I find I can have one every once in a while. Honestly it would probably be more often but I have bladder issues and caffeine aggravates it, so that helps me not over do it!
