I originally wanted to title this "are you $&@$*%# kidding me" but I thought that might be crude. Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised to find a sheet of OA Rocket Age chipboard on Etsy and snapped it up. The seller packaged it in a thin plastic envelope and it arrived almost completely destroyed. Do I say something to the seller? I don't want to tell someone how to run their business but this could have been avoided if it was shipped in a cardboard mailer. Those flimsy plastic mailers just get chewed up in the mail sorter. Sigh...

I would send photos and ask for a refund. If no refund is offered, leave negative (1 star, I think) feedback.

That’s awful. Even putting it between two pieces of cardboard probably would have protected it in the mailer.

Talk to them through the private conversation first and give them a chance to make it right. They probably have no idea how inadequate their packaging is. Most people underestimate how brutal the post system can be... In the long run you do everybody a favor by complaining because they'll never know that this isn't proper packaging if no one shows them the results, but hopefully they're good people and are as sad about the demise of the chipboard as you are and will make it right and do better in the future.
If they are dismissive or rude or deny that they had any fault then a negative review is probably justified, and is a public service.
(I'm speaking as an etsy seller, and also someone who bought something off etsy and was really unhappy with it and left a nasty review when the seller was dismissive. Now that I'm a seller I might have handled that a little differently... but I wanted to warn other people that this seller might be hiding/minimizing the faults in their secondhand merch)

Talk to the seller -- or refuse the package. I sold some Creative Memories pages on Ebay -- the pages were in a package, I bubbled wrapped them and taped the buddle wrap, then wrapped everything in heavy brown paper. The seller received the package with an edge torn - you could see the pages and see that the packaging of the pages was still intact (his pictures) and that it wasn't bent - just that little corner. He refused the package alleging improper packaging. I had to pay shipping both ways and Ebay was totally on his side. So talk to the seller.

I'd talk to the seller, too. Most of the time it's an honest mistake and they'll fix it. If they're a jerk, then ask for a refund or use the appeal/dispute system. That's what it's for.
I'm kind of in the same boat, I just ordered some of the old Magic Scraps ice flakes to make some shakers, and the woman repackaged it so there was about 25-30% of what there should have been in each one. I might get ONE shaker out of the pack instead of a 1/2 dozen like I should have, and one of them was in a non-branded generic bag with no logo, so you could TELL she stripped them down. I ended up paying $11 for 1 package of stuff. I just don't even know what to say to her.

So sad and annoying - all the seller needed to do was sandwich it between two pieces of cardstock and adhere it closed with washi tape and it would have been fine.
Hope you get a resolution you are happy with and can salvage your goodies.

I definitely always give sellers the chance to make it right...I am super unassertive. It was a mental hurdle just to send her a message letting her know there was an issue. I always err on the side of extreme politeness, lol.

I'm wondering-- are the pieces themselves unusable? From your photo it looks like they are mostly just popped out of the backing sheet only. (Annoying, certainly, but I've had that happen to all sorts of chipboard stuff, and the pieces themselves are fine.)

A few of them are definitely still useable. I didn't get a good detailed pic but most of them have huge creases (like the astronaut boy) or are chewed up/separating layers. When I first saw it I was really hoping that they had just popped out but overall most of it was in rough shape.

Glad all turned out well. I learned to speak up for myself a long time ago in matters concerning money. It drives my kids crazy, but they haven't grown up having to count pennies. They will learn.

That was pretty bad. In all of my online purchases, I have only had one bad experience with 12 x 12 paper made to fit in a 13 x 8.5 box. Crushed paper is not what I am looking for to scrapbook. I tried to imagine the dude (in my head the packer was a male) who smooshed the paper and sent it on its way.
