I have only flown once, when I was 25, no problems. Until right before the flight, I had no fear of flying. I will not get on a plane, it terrifies me. I am not at all afraid of terrorism, just crashing! I worry that the pilots will both have heart attacks or something too. No one in my family is afraid to fly so not sure why I am!

Last time I flew, I drank wine. It makes me relaxed and sleepy. I always manage to start crying as soon as the plane takes off and everyone stares at me...LOL.

I have a fear of flying and had panic attacks on fights in my 20s. The idea of booking a flight makes me anxious about getting in the plane.
In my 20s I took the fear of flying course offered with a major airline. I learned breathing / calming strategies and coping strategies. For example I always tell the flight attendant that I’m scared of flying when I’m boarding the plane (there’s something about letting someone know your fear - not having to keep it secret - that is liberating). The attendants now check in with me during the flight, tell me about upcoming turbulence (a pilot doesn’t always think to inform the cabin if he thinks it isn’t rough) will sit with me during bad turbulence. The constant smiles and check ins and reminders that everything is ok are so helpful. I sit near the front of the plane (I find it less scary - I book my seat in advance ) on an aisle so I can view the flight attendants during take off and landing. I actually tell them I’ll be looking at them. They often smile at me and mouth ‘all ok’ during take off.
I also take an adivan the night before a flight and the day off. Adivan can make you feel a bit loopy which for me makes me feel turbulence more but I don’t want to have another panic attack on an airplane. I tell the flight attendants I’m medicated.
I now fly regularly. The more you go the less worry there is. It takes practice. Some flights require more adivan than others. Depends on airline, flight attendants, turbulence and a variety of other factors. Not hiding it and keeping it in will really help. Many people are scared. They just don’t share it.l. But wish they had the courage to share it.
I’ve explained to my girls that I’m scared of flying but they don’t have to be. That everyone has their own issues. I have one dd petrified of spiders. I have another scared of loud noise. My thing is airplanes. That way I can show fear in front of them without them thinking there is a reason to be scared.
Good luck and don’t stay behind. Life is too short.
Paige.

i didn't read any responses but... i hate flying. i have taken xanax on my last couple frights. not gonna lie - i am still afraid because the entire thing seems completely unnatural BUT the xanax takes the edge off. just sayin' i am still aware i could fall out of the sky at *any* moment but when i take a xanax i care a lot less... if that makes sense.

dd was fearful of flying, but she went to college so far away from home, the only way to get home was to fly. she didn't like it at first, and I would talk to her until she had to turn off her phone, and then would call once she landed by flying several times a year she finally got so that she is not as afraid of it, and has had no incidents that spooked her
It is ok to be nervous. take a book or ereader, have something to distract you. if you like music, listen to music on an ipod or your phone in airplane mode. get a bottle of water before you board, and choose your seat - if you don't want to feel trapped, get an aisle seat even if you have to pay for it, the cost will be worth it.
It will be ok, and you can do it.

Xanax. The Costco size bottle if taking those little island hopper planes will be required.

I take a low dose Xanax. It doesn't make you feel like you are "on" something and the anxiety just goes away. The difference is unbelievable.
