if it was a another student, that would be inappropriate but i might be more lenient in my approach.
if it comes from the school or the teacher in any sort of official capacity... the principal would be hearing from me. parents can chose religious instruction but i would *not* be happy at all if that happened at a public school.
EITHER way, it's wrong.

I don't have a problem with it. If you don't believe in the Bible just throw it away. It's no big deal. I DO believe in the Bible - I don't believe in handing them out in public schools. And I'm NOT comfortable just throwing it away but my daughter already has Catholic Bibles that include the Old and New Testaments and she doesn't need a Gideon Bible.

I don't have a problem with it. If you don't believe in the Bible just throw it away. It's no big deal. This response really bothers me. First of all, it is premised upon not believing in the Bible. We can believe in the Bible and still not want strangers accosting our children to press their own version of the Word upon them. Promoting any form of religion to minor children without their parents' permission is distasteful to me. And to many others. Not to the people doing the promoting, of course. Unless it should be some other form of belief system trying to ensnare their kids. Public schools in the U.S. should not be promoting any form of religion. Non-school-affiliated adults should not be standing outside school property trying to convert other people's children. Teachers should not be telling kids to take the offered book and say thank you. It's just wrong all the way around. And finally, it's wasteful to tell people to just take the book and toss it out. More unnecessary crap in the landfill, just because apparently we have to be respectful of their beliefs, but they aren't expected to be respectful of ours.

I think we all know what would happen if somebody in a headscarf stood outside the school handing out religious literature.
I am generally pretty go with the flow and don't get my knickers twisted too often, but if this happened at my school, I would be following up. Totally unacceptable to me. But I doubt that would ever happen where I live (NY).
