My poor pup has one ear infection after another. Even though I hear that dogs rarely have allergies, nothing else I have done has worked and it is very expensive to continually go to the vet for them to tell me that yes, my pup has another ear infection. They have run out of different options. So I thought I'll go grain-free. I know it takes about 8 weeks to get it all out of his system, but at this point I will try anything. I am cleaning his ears out daily and it is GROSS. He is on special $$ meds for it, too. But my dog hates the food! He will normally eat absolutely anything so this is a shock to me. I've mixed the food with gravy, with meat with pumpkin, etc., and the dog will suck the good stuff of the food and spit out the rest. It's been one week and he has had about 2 cups of food total (he's a 50lb dog). I keep thinking that today will be the day that he caves, but I'm ready to cave. I have bought 3 different brands and he hates them. He hates the treats as well! I got 3 different kinds of treats and he hates them all, even the sweet potato ones. AARGH. Any suggestions? Dog Food I tried: - SPORTMiX Wholesomes Chicken Meal & Chickpea Formula Grain-Free Dry Dog Food
- Horizon Legacy with Salmon All Life Stages Grain-Free Dry Dog Food
- Purina Beneful Grain Free With Real Farm-Raised Chicken Dry Dog Food
Treats I tried: - Buddy Biscuits Grain-Free Oven Baked with Rotisserie Chicken Dog Treats
- American Journey Salmon Recipe Grain-Free Oven Baked Biscuit Dog Treats
- Blue Dog Bakery Peanut Butter & Molasses Grain-Free Dog Treats
- Some sweet potato one I got at Target

Do you have a Tractor Supply near you? Their 4Health brand is really well rated and they have grain free options. They also carry several other well-know brands with grain free options. The prices are cheaper than Pet Smart or PetCo.

My pup, Bailey, has been on Halo Spots Stew grain-free dog food for almost two years and she loves it. I buy it either from Amazon or Petco. She likes the chicken flavor the best, and she loves the wet food. My cats also eat the Halo Spots Stew wet and dry cat food and won't eat anything else.

I noticed all your tries are for chicken or salmon. Was he eating a chicken or salmon based food before? If he is used to beef flavors you might try a beef based grain free.

When researching dog food, I found that this site incredibly helpful. Dog Food AdvisorYou can search for a grain free dog food and then read the review. There is also a forum if you have any questions or want some feedback about your pup's ear infections.

We've always given our dogs Taste of the Wild - usually bison or lamb. When we switch up their foods we will mix them for a week gradually reducing the old formula with each feeding. We don't buy treats for our dogs since we really have to watch their weight. We usually give them things like green beans, chunks of banana, and canned pumpkin for snacks.
I know some people swear that putting apple cider vinegar in their dog's water dish has helped with allergies.

We feed Earthborn Holistic Coastal Catch. It's a fish based protein (supposedly easier on the stomach-our dog is a puker) and so far so good. The pet store here will take back opened food if your dog doesn't like it.

Louis would never eat any type of dog food plain and I tried a lot of them-this was before I switched him to grain-free. But he loves Fromm Beef Frittata- he will eat it plain, but I always mix in some type of meat because he's a spoiled rotten brat. For treats, he eats these from Cloud Star.

Tucker ate Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream food (kibble with a little wet food added texture) and Wagatha’s treats from Vermont. Those come in a huge variety of flavors and he loved them all.

Have you thought about cooking for your dog.
I throw beef/chicken/sweet potatoes and brown rice into a large crock pot. I add all kinds of vegetables at the end. You can omit the rice.
I buy everything at Costco or the grocery store on sale.
My 70 pound dog loves it. She’s thriving.

I feed my dog a dehydrated raw grain free as well as a frozen raw grain free. I buy Primal, and I switch up the flavors. I haven't had a single one that he will not gobble up immediately. The frozen is cheaper, but when I am away from home, it is not convenient for me so I use the dehydrated as well. You just crumble it up and add hot water. He has on occasion eaten it as is when I wasn't near any source of hot water. Wet food is better for them than dry food, but I also give him a hard dry dental chew for his teeth. They need something dry to help with their teeth.
I also have one kitty that was just not thriving on anything I fed her. She didn't want to eat, her fur was falling out, and she was so thin. The vet performed all kinds of tests on her and could not determine what the problem was. Since the dog was doing so well on the raw food, I bought the dehydrated Primal Turkey flavor for cats and she absolutely adores it. She went from having to be hand fed to get any food into her to waking me up in the morning meowing and patting my face until I get up and feed her. She regained the weight she had lost, her fur is thick and gorgeous, and the patches that had fallen out have all grown back in again. The vet still has no idea what was wrong with her, but she is doing fantastic now. I tried the frozen raw on her and she refused to eat it. She's my picky princess kitty.

The prices are cheaper than Pet Smart or PetCo. My lab eats the 4Health grain free large breed food from Tractor Supply. As far as food goes, she's always been on the grain free. Treats is another story, but we're working to get her grain free there too. I'm currently treating her for an ear infection.

My golden retriever currently eats grain- free Blue Wilderness. We switch up the dry proteins every time we buy a new bag and we also mix in some of the wet packets one feeding per day. He eats every bite. He's 4 and has never had an ear infection. We started him on grain free as a puppy so I guess he doesn't know what he's missing😊

I have a 50 lb Shephard mix who had ear infections and poops not formed well. Vet recommended going grain and chicken free. We switched to Natural Balance bison and sweet potato. Both issues cleared up immediately. It's well worth the money.

Part of me thinks that as a dog parent I should just do this because you get the dog you get, but most of me thinks UGH! I can barely cook for my child left at home Still, maybe it will come to this. Thank you for all these great suggestions!!! I'm going to pick a beef-based one and try that. Does anyone know if the Humane Society takes open bags of food? The first one I bought was the 31 lb bag before I wised up.

Our dog had a corn allergy. So we went grain/corn free. We used Taste of the wild, and blue buffalo I think it was. It helped greatly. Unfortunately the little stinker would walk all the way out to the pasture and eat the horse's grain! We always knew when he was doing it, as he would lose all the hair around his eyes.

I just went to our local P & A Feed. They asked what we were currently using (A Taste of Tuscany) and she recommended Nulo. They recommend you switch around to the different flavors each time you buy a new bag. So far after a week he likes it. It seems the itchy and licking have been cut down alot, but not totally eliminated...but much better.

I have an allergy dog. We actually tested her for environmental and are trying immunotherapy injections currently. With that said we've gone round and round with food, thinking food allergies. I'm pretty sure she's allergic to chicken and I found in my research that chicken is a common allergen. The other thing they suggest is a protein they haven't had before. We tried a strict diet to try to see if she had food allergies first. They have prescription food or you could certainly try it with regular brands, but the KEY to it is 60 days strict food only. So her treat jar just had kibble in it because she needed to be strictly on one food (no flavored heartworm/flea either.) Good luck, allergies are no fun. And just to add interest, we have a 2nd dog who like your dog turns his nose up at half of what we feed them. He's kind of funny, the other dog had tummy troubles and vet prescribed probiotics for a short time this summer. He sometimes waits and will eat only if I put some probiotic on his food....just cause he likes it that way

We use Petsmart's Simply Nourish Salmon and Sweet Potato. Our poodle had both ear and skin problems. Putting him on a diet of no beef, chicken or wheat was the cure. Both of our dogs eat it (to make our life simpler) and they love it

I have no idea as to what our dog or the cat eats. I do know our payments to Pet Smart is about the same as our expenditures at Safeway. Anyhow, this reminded me of a story; Yesterday I was at my local Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when woman behind me asked if I had a dog.
What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's butt and a car hit us both.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard, and now Wal-Mart won't let me shop there anymore.
