I love what has become our unconventional Christmas Eve tradition! We go to my mom's on Christmas Eve. We ALL receive and wear Christmas pajamas for the duration of activities (lol). We get take-out Chinese AND Indian food for our multi-culti event, and we watch a non-traditional Christmas Movie. Die Hard, Die Harder, The GingerDEAD man have all been selections ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) We play games, open presents, sometimes karoake and it's just a fun, relaxing night. All of the grandkids are teens now and seem to really enjoy the evening.

I love reading about all your holiday traditions.!! Our kids are older and the family has gotten bigger, so we have less "hoopla" and have scaled back. When, and if, there are grandkids, I will go into full mode again. My new traditions are Midnight Mass, comfy pajamas for all Dec 24 and driving around between Christmas Eve and January 6 with my husband to look at Christmas lights in different neighborhoods with a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate. And I always look at the Christmas cards I've received ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/santawithtree.gif) from the swap (Thanks, Peas) and friends/family.

We don't really do anything, one year we invited my in-laws and dh's sister to have dinner at a restaurant with us but they both declined, turns out they had a fondue party and didn't invite us. Dh's parents are really unbalanced in fairness. My parents would never invite my sister and not me if we were both in the same city. We only live about 2 miles away so it's not like we're too far, they're just very selective and one sided. They're also not very bright about hiding it, they're paying for dh's sister and husband to go to Peru with them. How does he know? They put his email address in the list of people to send the receipt to from the travel agent. It's weird, so in general we don't do anything specific, it's just another day here. Man, that is really stinky on their part.

Thank you to everyone for sharing how you spend your Christmas Eve. I love reading about the things that are a part of your lives and the treasured time you enjoy with your loved ones. I thought very seriously about renting a big mountain cabin in Gatlinburg or taking the boys up to Snowshoe for a winter getaway, but I want to make some memories in our own home that my boys will carry with them. We may light the fireplace, toss of few ice cubes in cocktails and we'll for sure eat well.

Christmas Eve is spent at my parents with my family, my sisters family and my brothers family. Kids open gifts, adults exchange ornaments. Kids wear their new pjs.
What about going on a drive and looking at everyone's Christmas lights?
Or watching movies? Board games?
Chinese take out?

It's low key. Kids open one gift, we have a simple dinner, and some snacks. Sometimes we'll go to my mom's house, have wassail, play games, and mainly hang out. Then there's usually me wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve because I hate it so much.

In my country Christmas Eve is just as important as Christmas Day. We usually spend one day/evening with my husband's side of the family, and the other day with my side of the family. Conservative catholic families also attend mass on Christmas eve but my family are not religious. As for traditions, the Portuguese usually eat cod fish on Christmas Eve, but this is not the same for all regions of the country. I always cook turkey on Christmas Day as well as a number of sweet dishes and baked goodies.

I make a seafood pasta sauce and have my kids and grandkids and even my ex and his girlfriend over. It’s a happy time. I’ve been doing that seafood sauce for 30 years, as a nod to the Christmas Eve fish meals my Italian mom and grandma use to make.

It's usually just DH and I for Christmas Eve as all 4 kids go with their other parents for the evening. He makes our dinner of rib eye steaks topped with this awesome cheese concoction, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. We use my mother's wedding china and silver, complete with her candlesticks (she passed away 18 years ago). We (I) wrap last minute presents and we go to midnight mass.
Pretty simple but romantic.
