You’re totally right though and it’s a possibility. I go on holiday (and stay in Airbnb’s) to escape my anxieties and relax - I just can’t let myself get paranoid about cameras that may or may not be there during a short stay in someone’s property.

But.... wouldn't most people that were renting their home want to see who does damage if the home is damaged. I can see many having cameras and for that, I'm out. lol Well they are meant to check the property between each stay so they can give you relevant feedback to your profile. They should know who did the damage without cameras if they follow the above policy. Very true, but in this day and age, there are sooooo many bizarre things that go on. I could see someone blaming damage on a break in or other unruly guests, etc. Maybe I watch too much TV and news programs. lol

Instead I get ridiculously paranoid about my luggage going missing on flights!

I've thought about cameras before, but quite frankly, some weirdo could install tiny cameras in a public bathroom or a hotel room or a dressing room in a department store.
I like Airbnbs for trips w/ the family so we have lots of room to spread out. When it's just my husband and myself I'd rather stay at a hotel and have maid service everyday.

Yep, cameras could easily go in hotel rooms too.
It is going to vary with AirBnB. You can get some very nice homes with chandeliers and 10,000 square feet. You can get nice yachts that come with a chef. You can also get some dumps. You can get whole homes, rooms in a home, sharing rooms. Home where the owner lives, homes where the owner lives in a completely separate part of the how and homes where only renters stay. You can even find hostels. You can get them including breafast and get them not including sheets. So you really can't say that AirBnB is only had places for specific people.
The pictures are a huge thing. I have always found that the pictures tell the truth. I made a mistake in Israel once thinking that the owner would straighten things up from the picture. No. It had the lived in look just as the pictures showed. However, I still gave the owner 5 stars. She was an excellent host and went beyond what was needed and really the pictures were exactly as advertised. In situations like this I may say something like this in my review and notice other people do the same, "the home was as pictured."
If you have questions about a place then message a host. How fast the get back to you and how well they anewer your question will tell you a lot. Do remember time differences though so if they live on the other side of the world and it is 2am their time they may take longer to answer you than if you are in the same time zone.
Here is one caution I have from this weekend. I have been looking for places on an island thousands of miles away, in another country. When I clicked on one of the listings I could easily tell this was listed in the wrong place as it described a small town in Utah where I got married. At first I figured it was a problem with filling in the GPS wrong so I messaged the owner to let them know. He never answered back after 2 weeks so I didn't think anything about it. Then Friday I started searching for a place again and it was still there.
Long story short I discovered this listing was started in 2017 under one name with no reviews and there was another listing with the same property, this time in the right place with good, recent reviews for a different owner starting in 2014.
We could have shown up and found we had no place to stay if I had booked the place. So for now on I will google things in the description to see if the description comes up with alternate listings. (I found the correct info on Home Away and other places as well. Best I can figure is that the incorrect info was a scam and I have reported that to AirBnB.

I guess I might be the lone dissenter but I only have one AirBNB experience and while it was ok I much prefer hotels. I guess it depends on if you're renting someone's primary residence or somewhere they rent out year around. We went with friends (they made the reservations) to the Kentucky Derby and stayed in a home that the family only rented out this one weekend every year, otherwise it was their primary home. It felt weird. Dh and I stayed in one of the kids bedrooms.....there was no hanky panky that weekend, that's for sure. It felt weird looking for extra toilet paper in their bathroom, we cooked breakfast one day and had to unload their dishes from the dishwasher, just stuff like that. It was fine but it's something we don't really want to repeat. On the flip side I do really like to stay in rental condos/cabins that are setup for year round rentals, it's nice to have the big fridge, washer/dryer, separate rooms for the kids, etc. I had a similiar experience staying in some ones home. I should have asked more questions before booking.

The first time I used Airbnb was on my trip to Poland and Germany this past May. I booked an apartment in Krakow that was so beautiful, clean and cheap in Krakow for an incredible low price. It was so close to the city center. I swear it was so clean I could have eaten off the floors. It was my first Airbnb experience and it was wonderful. I spent 4 days in that apartment since I spent the rest of my time in Poland staying with relatives. When I got to Germany the first city I stayed in was Munich for 4 days so I booked an apartment through Airbnb for that city too. That one was more expensive (Munich vs. Krakow and currency exchanges) but it was very close to the subway and handy to get to the city center-which was what I looked for when searching both apartments.
They both had washing machines (another thing I looked for) and both renters were friendly and easy to communicate with. I found both experiences to be a plus even though I was only traveling alone. The rest of my trip was spent going through Germany and only spending 2 days at each city so I found hotels for those places-which I loved to because hotels in Germany came with a wonderful breakfast each morning. I found great prices for those too using hotels.com by booking in advance.

I have neither stayed nor considered an Airbnb. The hotel stay is part of the vacation experience for me, not cooking or doing laundry in someone else's place. However, many friends & acquaintences prefer Airbnbs & vow never to stay in hotel again!
