I tell this as a dish whore who use to own about 20 sets of china, dishes, etc. I had and used Fiestaware for years, and it is pretty resilient. I would purchase 3 place settings and all serving pieces of each new color. I loved pulling out the colors for the seasons, and mixing and matching, and tablescaping for seasons and events. And then it got to be annoying!! And food would not always look appealing on some colors. Some did scratch, but no ships. I ended up selling it all (a dealer came and bought everything, for more than I ever paid!) And have used the white dishes that I bought one year for Thanksgiving when I had 20 guests daily ever since. They were 4 pack place settings, and I bought 5 packs for $19.99 each at Macy's. They have an interesting edge detail, and I can accent it with whatever I want, and change my linens, and glasses for a different look. It's so easy to buy 8 accent plates to change out the look and all food looks good on white dishes. I have used these daily for 20 years, no chips, no breaks and not nearly as heavy as Fiesta Ware. It also takes up half the space in my cabinets than Fiesta Ware. My other suggestion, if you really want color or pattern is check out Noritake. They make oven proof, microwaveable and dishwasher safe patterns. I still have, and occasionally use my set of "Royal Orchard'. You can toss that stuff like Frisbees, and they do not get damaged. What brand of dinnerware did you buy at Macy's? Does it show silverware marks?

We replaced our dishes this summer with some stoneware ones from Shopko and I love them. They look similar to Fiesta but are not as heavy and I really like the size of them. Shopko was running a sale at the time (DMIL tipped me off) so I paid 20.00 for 4 place settings (no mugs). So far there have been no chips and they seem pretty sturdy...I dropped a bowl on the floor shortly after we got them and it didn't break.

What brand of dinnerware did you buy at Macy's? Does it show silverware marks? the brand is Tabletop Gallery, but I do not recall the pattern. It was similar to Crate & Barrel "Olivia". It was almost 15 years ago. It was a Black Friday deal that I got on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The brand is listed at BB&B, Kohls, Walmart, etc when you search online. It does not show any wear, knife marks etc. Best deal ever. "

I have Pfaltzgraff dishes. Had them since 2000 and only 2 dishes have chipped in that time. The rest all looks great.

I just think it seems like it would chip easily. I started Fiestaware collecting 25 years ago. I've never had a chip. I have a few older pieces that were my grandmother's and those are chip free, too. She used her Fiesta daily. Does Fiesta ware scratch? They do get silverware marks. I've never had an issue removing them with Bar Keeper's Friend or Wrights Copper Cleaner. I have some of the light pastels and dark colors. I can get the marks off all of it.

Sounds like me!! I still have my Royal Albert china (hard to part with it, but I'm getting ready to!!), DH's mom's china set, American Flag set, Easter dishes, Fall/Thanksgiving Mikasa dishes, and the Christmas Nikko HUGE set. Looking for a buyer for ALL of it and downgrading to just plain white dishes I got (Kohl's) that are The Food Network. Deciding if I want to keep my entire crystal set also (hand-blown, Gallia from Macy*s).... Time to thin it all out since we're apartment dwellers........ Any idea of where to look to sell it all? I tried Replacements, Ltd., but it's a pain to ship it ALL to them and then wait. TIA!

"replacements won't even pay the cost of what it would take to ship the china to them, and yet they charge a premium on the items that resell. And they will not quote until they inspect the china, and determine if it is first quality. I sold mine collection over a period of 7-10 years.
Some went to auction (search out the most upscale in your region), my antique brown transfer ware went to an antique dealer, some went on ebay, my Platzgraph Winterberry was sold at a yard sale, a friend bought my Denby Stoneware, another bought my Murano Crystal.
I really don't think that there is much demand for any patterns from the past 30 years or so. You just need to take your time and be cautious. I had one person try to scam me on a Craigslist post. My local community has a community sale page that is safe (Must meet a Police station, only cash)that has also worked.
I sold Fiestaware by placing a Craiglist ad, and a Dealer came and bought all
I have been unsuccessful at selling my Wedgewood Preston Bone China, 12 place settings and serving pieces, Fitz & Floyd Cloisonne Peony (accent pieces to complement the Wedgewood), and Noritake Royal Orchard (16 place settings and serving pieces) or my Waterford crystal. I too live in apartment now, but a girlfriend has a huge basement and is storing for me. Occasionally I grab a box before a dinner or party and use it for a couple weeks usually at holidays, then take it back to her basement. It's hers if I die before I sell LOL.
Looking back it probably seems like a crazy investment, but I grew up eating off dishes my mother got when making a bank deposit. I wanted the pretties and I used the hell out of them. I always wanted dishes before diamonds!
Good luck and be patient.

Would you consider Fiestaware? It can be moderately priced if you watch for a good sale. I have looked at that. Love a lot of the colors. I just think it seems like it would chip easily. DH and DS are not easy on the dishes, and I am afraid I would start seeing chips within a few weeks. They do not chip easily. I have dropped a small bowl onto a pottery bowl. The Fiesta bowl came out of that ordeal unscathed. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the pottery. I have been quite impressed with the durability. Also, Fiesta is made in the USA.

Count me in as another vote for Fiestaware. We drop them all the time and they do not chip. I only add to my collection during the winter holidays when there are some fantastic deals.

I tried Replacements, Ltd., but it's a pain to ship it ALL to them and then wait. TIA! I inherited some china that I use and love. I needed more place settings as well as serving pieces. I bought them all from e-bay auctions. Some sellers sell by place settings, some by size (4 salad plates for $39.95, for instance), some offer individual pieces. I would bet most sellers have picked up these pieces at estate sales. I suspect most buyers want to expand an existing china set, like I did. I think the sellers are getting a reasonable return on investment. On the other hand, my FIL purchased a beautiful tea set in Germany after WWII. Ebay lists it for $35.00. That's right next to valueless when you consider packing and shipping. Check out e-bay to see if someone has similar items for sale. Also check on "sold" items to see what has actually sold and for what prices.

scrapbookwriter: Thank you!! DH tried to sell them locally (he sells EVERYTHING that I no longer want), but people here aren't interested in china or crystal + there are Estate/moving sales here daily so you could get an awesome deal on just about anything (if you're willing to meet up with potential murderers!). He sells on eBay, so I'll ask him to post them there and check them out. I hate the idea of having to pack them and ship them, and the chance of breakage is so high, but I'll check it out................... Good idea!
I'd love to sell the entire Christmas Nikko set asap since people are already decorating for Christmas......

I have Pfaltzgraff dishes. Had them since 2000 and only 2 dishes have chipped in that time. The rest all looks great. Pfaltzgraff was sold to a large corporation in 2005 or 2006, and production then went overseas. The quality then greatly decreased.

I'm not sure of your price range but I love the plates I got from Pottery Barn to replace some broken ones from my regular set. I also went back and got some of their tidbit plates. The colors vary so it is best to get them in the store so you can be sure everything matches. I ended up there because I needed a 9" sort of luncheon size plate and that is hard to find. We use that size all the time.

My dishes are from Pier 1, and I love them. I was able to mix and match as I wanted. And I got 10 place settings.

I bought 3 piece settings of Fiesta Ware back in the spring from Kohl's website. I didn't want mugs and I love the bowls that come in the 3 piece sets. Neither of my kids (teen/young adult) are careful with them and they still look new. I bet Kohl's will have some good deals with Black Friday & Cyber Monday coming up if you decide to look at them.

Corelle has eleventy billion colors and patterns. I think you can have everything you are looking for in Corelle. We did the heavy as hell stoneware (twice) and then switched to Corelle. Love it.
