Your post made me chuckle. Poor Pioneers.... They had it so rough. As I sit here drinking coffee made with my Keurig I can't help but think of some prairie woman having to brew an entire pot of coffee even though she only wanted one cup. And she did it over a fire I'm sure.... Poor pioneers.

Thank goodness they didn't know any better or they would have lost it! Talk about frustration if you KNEW what you were missing! Ignorance is bliss in that instance.

When I think of pioneers I think about how they were able to do - time wise - all the stuff they did. Planting and harvesting grain to make their own flour. Making their own clothes and milking cows before breakfast so there'd be milk FOR breakfast. Going to the mercantile in a horse-drawn buggy on that once-a-month grocery trip that took ALL DAY.
Now we have all this modern technology to make our lives 'easier', but we seem to have even less time than ever. Boggles me.

Heck remember life without the internet? I mean if the TV goes out you can still Pea with your phone (well many anyway). I can deal without power for 2 hours (that's the charge I have on my phone) then I am ready to go to a friend's house.

It would be the lack of AC that would be my undoing.
When we lived in Boston, we had a really rough winter. 80 plus inches of snow and cold. I kept saying "what were the pilgrims thinking?" They could have headed further south!

Amen to that!! We were without power on Sunday for a couple of hours due to a squirrel getting into and blowing a transformer. Thankfully we were busy outside doing yard work so it didn't really bother us too much. I miss all the conveniences power brings. LOL

Our power went out last weekend at about 8 in the evening and came back on at 3 am. Ta-DA! Everything was ON! LOL I had to get up and shut everything off.
I don't have a smart phone and when our power goes out - we lose internet also. We have our own well, so no water. No flush. ... You can get about one flush per toilet with what is left in the tank, so make the most of that!~ LOL
One good thing about farm living, if the power does go out for an extended period of time, the generators come out. They are big PTO generators that are hooked up to a tractor. Our power pole has a plug for the generator and a switch that we throw so power from our generator doesn't feed back into the lines. The generators are big enough that I can run everything in my house. The power has to potentially be out for an extended period of time for us to get them out though, unless we are watering livestock. Those generators get started if the power is out for more than a few hours.

If you were transported back in time your survival rate would be low for sure. But if you were a product of that time you would probably be just fine. Some day someone will look back on this time and comment the same as you have.

A few years ago we were without power for four days after an ice storm and we finally went out and bought a generator.
We hooked up the fridge so the food wouldn't go bad, and the tv and dvr so we could watch movies! lol

I will embarrassingly admit that the other night our cable/wifi went out and my son and I acted like the world had just ended and the zombies were right around the corner. Apparently, something happened that caused our whole area's system to fail. My son and I stared at the tv and/or the laptop for a good five minutes while poking buttons and rebooting things. Both of us finally decided to give up and go bed because we were wandering around like lost sheep. I would make a crappy pioneer.

They could have headed further south! Yet every time a hurricane knocks out our power when it's 90+ degrees out, I'm always wondering what kind of idiots moved to Florida before air conditioning was invented. Unless you live directly ON the beach with a constant sea breeze, it's miserable.

We've not had a power outage in a long time, but every now and again the internet goes down and DSO says I look like someone who lost their best friend. LOL I love my internet. I can live w/out the TV, but not my net! Oh, and the AC thing. Ours went out last Thursday. I melted. Luckly, the nice AC man fixed it Friday morning. I was ready to rent an hotel for the weekend if it was still broken.

We went 5 days without power once. No running water. No heat. And where we live, no cell service. It was an interesting 5 days. We kept going for car rides.
But those poor pioneers...no cars!

Today, I'm just glad I have ibuprofen gel caps to deal with menstrual cramps. I'm surprised women got pregnant more than once back before drugs and hospital births.

I could have lived in a seaside town like Charleston in the late 1800s--lots of night soirees and teas, and women were expected to lounge around to stay cool and all the medications had narcotics in them--so basically everyone was out of their minds...

Men back in those days, a lot of times, went through three wives.

When I think of pioneers, I think of skin rashes and bladder infections, lice and mosquitoes, ill-fitting shoes and no elastic in the clothing. Also, hairy armpits and no deodorant, crusty, plaque-coated teeth.... WHO would want to have sex in those conditions?

Men went through three wives because the women died in childbirth all the time.
