When I think of pioneers, I think of skin rashes and bladder infections, lice and mosquitoes, ill-fitting shoes and no elastic in the clothing. Also, hairy armpits and no deodorant, crusty, plaque-coated teeth.... WHO would want to have sex in those conditions? No kidding! And as farmdpea said - unmedicated births! Men went through three wives because the women died in childbirth all the time. And they probably were better off dead, in some instances.

I would never want to be one, but I sure have a huge amount of respect for them.

I hear you Sister!
I went on a Pioneer 'Trek" this summer. 18 miles of Hot, dry, sunny filled days walking the trail. No phones, cars, planes, toilets, iPod, Air Conditioning! ICE!!! anything. It was a very eye opening experience. Graves along the way of the people who died. I recommend it to anyone who feels entitled.
It should make you appreciate what you do have!
Also I should say this trail is in Wyoming. 3 ranchers let people on their land to do this. The cost is minimal 25$ a person for 3 days. They do it because it is a part of American History. I really wish I had an extra million $$ lying around. I would give it to them to preserve the past. They are being bought out by the big windmills for energy and now the land is priced so high they can't purchase around the area to keep it the same. so so sad.

Or an indoor bathroom with a toilet that flushes! My mom grew up very poor in the country... when they moved into their home (the only home I knew she lived in as a child).. there was no running water or bathrooms!! She is 75 years old. I remember the house because that is where they lived for most of their lives until my grandma was too old to stay by herself; we would spend every Easter and Thanksgiving there with all the relatives. I always knew about the bathrooms but recently just found out about the water... YIKES MOM!! Are you serious?? Poor mamma!! 8 brothers and sisters and grandma... oye!

If I had been a pioneer, I would have lasted one day in a covered wago before I called it quits! Can't image day after day traveling under those conditions.

Imagine being a pioneer woman crossing the prairie in a covered wagon. No kotex. No tampons. And for weeks no fresh water to bathe in.
My Mom used to talk about being a girl in the 20's having to use reusable rag pads. She had three sisters and it was quite the chore to wash...boil and dry those nasty things. Can you imagine??
We live such a charmed existence with our many conveniences. Just a little power outage is nothing. Irritating yes. But in the entire scheme of things not much at all in comparison.

I grew up in the South without AC. It was horrible! I still have flashbacks on really hot days when I have to be outside for any length of time.
I was obsessed with pioneers when I was a kid. I would have never made it.
I would have died having my first son if I had been a pioneer. He was stuck and I had to have a c-section.

There was a portrait of a sexy young lady with her hand held up behind her head, exposing those hairy armpits!

I can't imagine not having antibiotics or vaccines. One of my friends lives on a farm in Oklahoma. Her husband recently cleared an overgrown area of his land and discovered nine tombstones. They were all children with the same last name, so presumably they were all brothers and sisters. They all died within a few days of each other.

Sometimes I think about what my grandchildren won't be able to live without that doesn't even exist today. I am actually very grateful the internet didn't exist until I was old enough to handle it.

If I remember correctly, the oldest child was 16 and the youngest was just a baby. My friend's husband didn't find a tombstone for the parents, so they must have survived whatever killed the kids, or there was no one left to bury them. My friend's husband takes care of the tombstones now and weeds them regularly.

The people in my house, especially me, have been really cranky because our internet has been super slow to nonexistent, at the same time our land line phone has been so bad that we could not use it either. We never get cell phone reception in our home, so communication was poor to say the least. Finally, today the cable guy came AT THE SAME TIME that I got one of <<those>> phone calls (the kind from the doctor where you cry in relief). I could hear just enough over the phone to be happy but the doctor couldn't hear me. Tonight we are celebrating. I feel like I seeing the world wide web for the very first time.

There was the Children's Blizzard in 1888. The weather was warm and clear when they went to school, so they did not wear coats and boots or mittens to school. Even when they left school that afternoon, the weather was still nice. Then suddenly a brutally cold blizzard came along and killed so many of the children who couldn't get to their homes fast enough.
There is a book on Amazon about this blizzard. I read the synopsis and some of the reviews, but decided I would have nightmares for a long time if I read it. You can glean a lot of the story by reading about it on Amazon.
It might be interesting to see the dates on the tombstones on your friends property.

I would not have made it especially in the winter! Although, I did survive the AZ record breaking heat summer with only a small window unit for our house. I would remember the stories great grandparent who lived a good part of their lives without AC or heat. Most heat the got from a small wood stove in a little house in the woods. I always thought of Little House on the Prairie when he would tell me stuff. I was fascinated. I do.love modern medicine it's keeping me alive. Even the surgeries now are so advanced. I was a medical experiment for most if my ers. The internet was still fairly new when I was finishing up high school. Love it now!
