It had to happen sooner or later. I am knitting a blanket, have been for over a year--probably a year left to go at this rate. Our girl cat likes to pee on towels left on the ground (so fun) and lsat night, she peed on my knitted blanket. I didn't know for sure til I had spread it over my lap to start working on it. Gross.
So what do I do? It's acrylic, so can I wash it on gentle even though it's not done and the ends are not woven in (lots of ends--striped blanket)? I don't THINK it would shrink, but never used this yarn before....Would i then lay it out to dry? Don't want to shrink it, but I can't live with the disgusting pee smell on there for another year while I finish.
I don't want to ruin all my work, either.
Suggestions appreciated.

I'm so sorry that happened! I've always had cats and they do have their share of quirks, don't they?
I highly recommend Nature's Miracle. It's an enzyme product that really works on cat urine and we've never had it damage anything. We used it in the laundry (and for soaking) as well as spot cleaning. Except for when our one kitty was dying, it cut down on repeat peeing as well.
Just to be super safe, you might want to try a test on some of the yarn before you soak/launder the whole thing.

I have not BTDT, but washing it (maybe with some Nature's Miracle?) and laying it out to dry is what I'd do.

I’m so sorry!
Yes, you can wash acrylic yarn with no shrinkage. I would hand wash it so that you don’t have to take it off your needles, unless you have to.

I agree the acrylic won't shrink. I'd try the handwash method first. If you have to put in the washer, i'd put all the live stitches onto scrap yarn and knot it. I'd probably double up the scrap yarn.

Nature's miracle really does work. I have a cat who (I learned the hard way) pees on leather, and she ended up soaking the rug below the chair, too. The chair I had to toss but Nature's Miracle worked great on the rug. No more pee smell and the stain is gone, too.

I was also going to suggest Nature's Miracle and handwashing. Is kitty spayed? Do you now why she's peeing in various places?

If it happened to me, I would wash it well with nature's miracle then donate it. I'm just funny like that when it comes to animal pee. I wouldn't waste the blanket but I could never use it again.

Oh man... Cats are so weird... Yeah, Natures Miracle or the Fizzion. I've only had one cat who would do that. And it turned out it was a UTI. First I soaked the spot in Natures Miracle, rinsed it, then used the Fizzion stuff. I did not dry in the dryer. I have this idea that drying sets stains, smells, etc. etc. Anyway, maybe it's time to check kitty for a UTI?

I would take that betch in just to check for a UTI and then wash the blanket in OxyClean. I have an asshole cat who has been known on occasion to pee on clothes left on the floor, when the mood strikes.
I'll be the odd man out and say that I was not too impressed with Nature's Miracle, compared to Oxy.

thanks all. i will soak it and then squeeze out the excess water with towels and lay it out to dry. This cat drives me CRAZY!!! I have 1 cat that's like that!! Not only does she pee on things, but she sprays too!! She's been spayed, so that's not the issue. She's HIGHLY sensitive and anxious. I watched that show, "My Cat From Hell" for a few hours and got a ton of helpful hints. Just 1 day later, I have a different cat!!!!!!!!!! No more peeing. No more zig-zagging around my legs, trying to trip me. No more begging for food every hour. No more bad behavior! I began to feed her ONLY 3 times/day vs. a little bit every time she bugged me. I began to give her some attention (it took her some time to want to sit on my lap again!), and play with her for 15 minutes/day. I also give her a toy with catnip in it after we play. I swear, she's chill and loving and entirely different! I hope you find the answer to why your cat is peeing. I have the Nature's Miracle and I also use it to spray on furniture where she scratches (acting out--looking for my attention!). Hope that works for you!

I switched to this product. I've found it better than Nature's Miracle but I'm not sure how it would work on the blanket. okay y'all, you've convinced me to bring her to the vet just to have her checked out. I am pretty damn sure she's just a bitch who doesn't tolerate any poop or pee in her litter, whcih is IMPOSSIBLE to keep clean as we have three cats. (and yes, more than one litter box and yes, we clean it daily). As soon as someone poops in there, she's like 'hell no'. I don't blame her, exactly, but I am not her slave, hovering over the box waiting to clean it....

We haven't had a cat for several years. Sometimes when I visit my friend who has an adorable cat, I think about getting one again.
Thanks to threads such as these, I come to my senses and remember exactly why I swore off cats forever.

One is a male, 5 years old, ZERO TROUBLE and so sweet. The other, 2 years old, male orange, so kind and gently. Then there's Punky Brewster, his sister. the ONLY reason we went back to the shelter to get her was because we thought Potato Chip needed his sibling--he seemed lonely. And she is absolutely beautiful. But since DAY ONE she has been a pain in the ass. And she's not even nice!!! She's just like "serve me". "Do this, human". LOL. So ungrateful.

You never know what kind of cat you're going to get - it's all a crapshoot. Our first cat was wonderful. Our second and third cats peed in the stupidest places, and one of them also pooped in our kids' bathtub. My above-mentioned friend's cat has never gone outside her litterbox. That's what I want. I can even handle cats' aloof, bitchy behavior. In fact, I get a kick out of it. But having a cat pee or poop anywhere other than their litterbox puts me over the edge. SaveSave

i hear you--i fucking go CRAZY when she pees on the boys towels, which happens 3 x a week at least since teen boys leave their towels on the floor. I thought my blanket was safe because she's never peed on blankets before. But there ya go. My other two cats are SUCH lovies, and I even had another female cat for 22 years who was an angel and never peed ANYWHERE even when she got old. Sigh. She IS pretty, at least....

One of my "darling" female cats likes to poop and pee on things. She just does it because she's a bitch. I wash whatever it's on in the washer with vinegar in the bleach and fabric softener compartments, detergent in the detergent compartment, a 1/2 c of baking soda in the drum, and 1/2 c borax in the the drum. Wash on heavy soil. Dryer. I've done this multiple times with a down comforter, real velvet blanket, sheets, clothing, etc... Never with an acrylic blanket.

OMG--some of these cats remind me of my own b**ch cat.
Yes, mine has peed on things, like my overnight bag that was in my closet, had to throw it out.
She hates my other cat. She bites me, then growls, and then gets in my lap and purrs. What???
Can't figure them out.

My friend's cat used to pee on the top of the clean clothes if she left them in the laundry basket very long. THAT cat suddenly became an OUTSIDE cat!!

My Gabby likes to pee in the laundry baskets so I switched to only baskets that have a lid. So far she hasn't moved on to clean, unfolded clothes (yet!) and I hope she doesn't. She has been a PITA since we got her. If we didn't live in Florida (land of alligators, snakes, and all things dangerous), I would turn her into an outdoor cat in a heartbeat.

She will get right in and piss in it--fricking nightmare.

Punky pees on clean laundry in the basket AND last week, for the first time, she peed on FOLDED CLOTHES ON THE COUCH. I was so pissed (ha!) I was so upset. I had to rewash everything. Basically it means I have to put away everything the minute it's folded, and can't leave clean laundry on hte couch to fold.

Plus, the one time she got outside she was completely freaked out--she's never really been outside before. To be honest, I am at my wits' end with her.

My little one used to do that all the time -- like four times a day. I was at my wit's end. She didn't have a UTI or other physical symptoms. The vet suspected that it was anxiety over something. What, we didn't know. The vet gave me a sample of kitty prozac to try, and within a week, that was the end of the peeing. She takes her vitamin P every day since, and it has never been a problem since.
I was about to hire a cat behaviorist vet to come out to the house, to see if there was something I couldn't see that was bothering her. Cassie is the poster kitty for prozac, and my vet is recommending it more often. If it works, it really works.
As for the blanket, I would soak in some kind of enzyme cleaner (Nature's miracle or something similar) and let it air dry. Then wash in something like oxyclean. The enzymes need time to work, and drying in the sun helps.
