I have a new Mac Book pro laptop and had this same issue with the old one. I'd be typing something and all of a sudden my text is at the beginning or middle of what I just typed...WTF?? Am I hitting a key??

My old laptop did this and drove me bonkers! I have no advice for you, just commiserating.
When I bought a new laptop I didn't have that problem any more.

This happens to my mom and I; we both tend to hit the mouse pad with a thumb or finger. It's incredibly irritating!! I don't remember exactly what I did, but I changed the sensitivity/ability of my mouse pad. I thought I was going to go insane if I didn't find a fix for it.

She'd or he'd be saying "I tried to teach you"....

when I had that problem, my DS (AKA - tech support for his techno-unsavvy mom) turned off the thumb pad. I was hitting it with my hand. I use a wireless mouse.

Yes, I think you're hitting the trackpad. My mother had this problem on her laptop and since she's 86 she had no past experience with computers so she had no idea what was going on and couldn't explain it to me over the phone. But the first time I saw her type on it I knew that was the problem. I ended up covering the entire trackpad with a piece of cardboard. Taped it right to the computer. lol. Then I bought her a mouse, which she knew how to use from her old computer. Problem solved.

You don't need to tape over the track pad. Just go into the settings and shut it off or decrease the sensitivity.

You don't need to shut it off or decrease the sensitivity. You need to disable tapping.
I don't know how to do it for a Mac but on my Toshiba, I go into the control panel and click on Mouse. Then I go to the Device Settings tab then click on Settings. A list will come up then I select Tapping. There will be two boxes next to that. The top box has a blue box with a finger print and next to it is a checked box that says Enable Tapping. Uncheck that box and click OK.
My first laptop, I didn't have any trouble typing but with the one I have now, my typing was always jumping all around. I even watched my hands to see if I was touching the mouse pad but they don't. I think the area around the mouse pad is extra sensitive on this one.

Am I hitting a key?? Embarrassed to admit (started other computer thread) that I to had (and sometimes still do) this problem. Other teen, DD, pointed out thumb hitting track pad-and made me feel like the lame no-tech-skills-mom. Yeah, well I bet she doesn't know how to rewind a cassette tape with a pencil!

I still have it...I wonder if my thumb is hitting the track pad??? I have a super sensitive track pad and it happens to me ALL the time. It drives me f(*&)* crazy because all of a sudden I'll have half of my sentence is in the middle of a different sentence.
