My son's gf needs a purse and I thought that might be nice Christmas gift. I'm also getting her a Johanna Brasford coloring book and some nice colored pencils. Where do your 18 year old dds shop for purses? Is there something else that's trendy for that age? She isn't really into accessories or earrings. I have boring boys and I'm clueless.

young girls can be particular about purses. i don't know if i would give one as gift unless the girl specifically mentioned a brand or style she was interested in.

He should ask her what brands she like, it's important to know if she only likes name brands. If not, what colors she likes. I once had a boyfriend buy me a Coach handbag in black. He thought I would like it because it's Coach, but I never use black handbags. I politely said thanks, but he soon realized that all my other bags weren't black. I have a friend who only wears crossover bags which I hate.

My DD is 18 and she and most of her friends carry a Vera Bradley Crossbody purse. My dd is also not into a lot of bling, although, she does wear some. She also found a cute little backpack purse she wants from target. I think a purse is a hard thing to gift. Maybe a VB GC would be more appropriate so she can pick out her own style/ print. Then get her some smaller things to open if she is joining you on christmas. Like a nice scarf, hat & gloves or something fun for her car or cell phone.

AND this was only last year. AND this was only because i already owned two of that purse but in different colors. other than that, he knows better than go to into that minefield.

Purses are tough to buy for someone else. My son girlfriend loves small purses at the Coach outlet and Ross's purses.

I think it's OK to give a purse as long as you also give a gift receipt and are very clear that you don't mind if they exchange the gift. I would look at a store like Macy's if you want something higher end or Kohl's if you want trendy but more budget friendly.

Thank you everyone. I think a purse is a tough thing to buy for someone else, too. Maybe I should re-think my plan. I'll look at VB first. My sister sends me a Coach bag or wallet every year on my birthday, but she knows me so well. She always chooses something that I love. I was going budget friendly here. Thank you for your ideas and advice.

People can be very picky about purses. I only do leather, and a long cross over strap. My girls who are in their 20s, like cloth, and big bags. Vera Bradley is considered an old lady style around here. I know it's big in other areas, but my girls would be horrified to get one. Has the GF told your son she wants you to buy one specifically? I would get a GC.

What about getting her a gift card to a store and put it in a little purse shaped holder/bag? If you like the girlfriend, you could make a lunch date and go shopping with her.

I had also thought about a trip to a pottery painting place as something we could do together. Hmmm...

Not to highjack but I don't know why VB purses are so trendy? I'm almost 50 and consider that style old lady looking, but it is trendy.. My dd has a VB pack pack for school (of course she got the previous years style so it was on clearance or whatever).

I think an inexpensive purse is a great gift for an 18 year old. My 20 year old considers all name brands to be for old ladies like her mom so has no interest in Coach, Michael Kors, etc.
She prefers backpack style or crossbody purses and most are cloth or leather/cloth with fun patterns.
Where does this girl like to shop? DD has asked for purses from Tillys, H&M, Zumiez, Pacsun and local beach stores.
Definitely include a gift receipt.

A lot of people are pretty particular about their purses. My 17 yr old dd carries Michael Kors & ds's gf also carries the same brand purse. I've personally carried only Coach bags since i was a teenager.
I'd probably ask what she likes unless your sure she really isn't particular about it. I'd look at Marshalls or TJMaxx as they carry every name brand.

I wouldn't overthink it. TJ Maxx is handbag heaven. Pick something cute out, include a gift receipt, and take a chance. DD18 likes small crossbody bags, and large structured bags.

My DGD who is 16 "graduated' from VB stuff about 2 years ago. One of our local boutiques doesn't even carry it any more.

I was going to suggest the same thing as Caspad. Find out what type of purse, name brand (or not) she likes and buy a gift card and a gift card holder that looks like a purse.
I, for instance, buy my purse at Ross, and prefer it be under $25(I won't spend more then $30 on a purse). I don't care about brand. I only use black purses, and it has to be a satchel/duffle bag style with a silver(hate the gold and brass zippers) extended zipper(no short zippers, I like my purse to open wide), with one inside liner zippered pocket (for money and cards), and one zippered pocket on the outside(for keys). I use multiple mini & smaller cosmetic style bags >> make up bag, lipstick bag, miscellaneous bag(tums, mints, nail file, travel pack tissues,etc..), phone bag(charger, ear buds, etc...), etc...and put them all in my purse.

I'm going to be right near TJ Maxx tmw am.... Thank you for your feedback, ladies. Having boys I missed all the fun stuff like manicures and lunch and shopping and girlie stuff. This is new turf. I'm just sad that she's too old to play w/dolls or I'd raid the pink aisle at ToysRUs.

I really want a new purse for Christmas and I'm not that picky (don't care for name brand either). I've dropped a hint to my family that TJ Maxx had some good ones. If they pick something that doesn't suit me, that's fine. It will give me the excuse I need to exchange and get one I do like. For some reason I can never justify buying myself a new purse when I need one.
Maybe your son's girlfriend would be the same way. Find one you think suits her and put the gift receipt in the purse.

I’d see if she has Pinterest, and stalk her boards for a sense of her style. You might get lucky and find the perfect gift there!

I suggest giving her a gift card to TJMaxx, Marshall's, or a department store; she can then purchase the purse (or wallet, jewelry, sweater, whatever) that she likes & reflects her style/color preference/etc.

Or at least buy her some dresses and makeup and stuff. She isn't into that plus she is an adult.

My dd is 22. It would most likely be a safe bet to get her a small wallet type purse with a hand strap. I can’t think of what they are called. Fossil outlet always has nice ones as well as Kate Spade outlet and they aren’t super expensive.

Thanks again for the great ideas. scrappychick, I loved your idea and stalked her pinterest board. She didn't have anything that was helpful. Earlier she was sitting w/me as I was wrapping the motherlode for my sil. I showed her a coloring book and asked if she likes to color. I showed her a purse that I had purchased for my sil(I raided Charming Charlie a great store) and gf liked it, but my sil is a few decades older than gf. She had no idea that I was trying to see what she liked.

My son’s girlfriend is 18 and no Vera Bradley. She likes to choose purses and clothes for herself. I’m giving her a gift certificate as well as a cute kohl’s throw and a filled stocking.

DS17 girl friends carry them during leisure time. 45 pound backpacks of school and practice gear during the day, and practically nothing but a phone and cash in tiny wristlets at night.

I have a 22 year old daughter and I would be hesitant about picking out a purse for her even though we shop together often. She is very picky!
Her favorite designer brand is Tory Burch and her favorite budget friendly chain store is Target. If I knew my daughter wanted a new purse for Christmas and I didn't want to mortgage my house to pay for a Tory Burch, I would give her a gift certificate to Target and take her shopping to pick one out. I would make it clear, however, that she could buy whatever she wanted w/ the gift certificate if she didn't find a purse she liked.
