One side of me want to cry to read this, you are such a lovely person - the other side wants to scream profanities and throw a temper tantrum, you are such a lovely person.

Virginia, I am so sorry to hear this new report on your health. I will keep you in my thoughts for a good visit with the doctors at the U of Michigan, may they be able to find something to give you many more years with us. Hugs!

I avoided even opening this topic, because the subject line was shitty. The words are even worse. Fuck cancer. I hope you have an amazing Christmas with your family, Virginia.

Furthermore, I am sorry you have to come to MI in January. Yes. It is a bit crazy for this desert dweller to go in January. I don't own gloves. I am headed to Target tomorrow to see what they might have left. My BFF lived in Utica for years (but not anymore) and she told me to brace myself. I do have a good coat and hat and scarf but gloves can only be found in singles. I looked through the whole coat closet and found about five gloves. Not a single one had a mate. I think they secretly marry lonely socks and live somewhere in a mystical land having hybrid glove-sock babies.... And thank you all for your love and support. It means so much to me. I haven't given up yet but I do feel like we are plugging holes in the dam with chewing gum. No worries! I hear mismatched gloves are a thing. At least that’s what I see girls are wearing at DD’s university. Actually it’s not so much that mismatched is a thing but that matching is NOT a thing they care about. DD’s friends haven’t cared about matching socks for years so the glove thing didn’t surprise me. Matching is apparently something ‘old’ people care about. 😳 Just don’t pair gloves & mittens that would be ‘too much’ ( but those might be the sick glove babies you imagine, along with the toed socks )

My doctor in Dallas says he's almost out of things to throw at this cancer so he agreed it would be prudent to book an appointment at the only adrenal cancer center in the US which is at U of Michigan. I'm to see Dr. Hammer on Jan 16th and while I don't expect a miracle, I'm hoping he has something that will give me more time. The immunotherapy did absolutely nothing. My scan this week was awful - all the lung tumors are larger plus there are some new ones. And as a holiday bonus, one of them is blocking my middle right lung lobe so it's collapsed. No wonder I have pain when I breath and why I can't walk very far without losing all my breath. I've been referred back to interventional pulmonology to see if it's prudent to intervene and try and re-inflate the lobe. Another tumor is pushing against my esophagus, causing difficulty swallowing. The only good news is that my endocrinologist has been on top of my hormone levels and is doing a great job controlling my symptoms with medications. I'm on an androgen blocker, another medication to help regulate excess cortisol, and blood pressure medication. The tumors pump out vast quantities of various hormones and they wreak absolute havoc when left unchecked. My blood pressure is usually almost too low but now that my tumor mass is so big, I'm getting too much of all the cortical hormones. I just have the feeling things are all downhill from here and I will never be any better than I am right now. For the moment I'm still functional so we're going to have a good cozy Christmas and do our best to enjoy each other. So sorry to read this update and hoping for some kind of turnaround. Hope they are able to offer something helpful in MI. PLEASE be careful there...don't know if you'll be renting a car while there or what, but the driving around that particular area is downright insane. Even being warned by my husband before we visited there, nothing could have prepared me for it. I've been around plenty of areas where they drive crazy, but WOW. They really take the cake there, especially the main highways from the airport to & going around Ann Arbor area. Not that you need more to worry about, but just a heads up, because Dallas may be a big city, but they're a lot more laid back and respectful on the roads. Maybe you can arrange other transportation.

Thanks for the heads up but I'm pretty confident in my driving ability. I have lived (and driven) all over the world. Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Naples, San Francisco, Chicago, big cities, small towns, autobahns, one-lane twisting mountain roads on sheer cliffs...Ann Arbor will be cake.
