Huh. Based on the previews, I didn't really have any interest, but I believe you all have convinced me I should tag along with dd when she goes.

I had zero desire to see it. I loathe the circus and I'm glad it ended this year. But I read this thread and we had cancelled our NYE tradition because of the cold and went to see this instead. I loved it. The dance numbers and the songs were fabulous!

I'll be the odd man out. I hated it! Took DD last week and I was so disappointed--I really wanted to love it! For the record, I love musicals, I love Moulin Rouge, I love a spectacle--but this stunk. The songs all sounded the same to me, there was zero character development, the message of inclusivity was heavy handed and beat you over the head, the dialogue generally terrible, and SO many cliches. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief that people will suddenly start singing and dancing but why did the little girls not age? Did the entire movie's plot take place over 6 months? And WTH is he going to do with the elephant at the end? Valet park that sucker? I don't always agree with movie critics but this time I did.

lol-- I agree with your points, stampinfraulein - but I think I needed a feel-good break, so despite those things (and GOOD point about the daughters not aging!!), I liked it. I tried not to analyze it too, too much when I saw it- Hugh Jackman in a musical canceled out some of your points for me, I guess!

I liked it but didn’t love it. My big kids both saw it twice. I thought Hugh Jackman was phenomenal.

Loved this movie. I left the theater happy and kept talking about it all day. Really an enjoyable experience. Made for the big screen. Go see it.

We all loved it. Even my SIL who hates musicals, ended up saying he loved it.

My girls and I went yesterday. They loved it. My six-year-old said unprompted this morning, “I really loved that movie.”. It was just OK for me. Yes, the historical inaccuracies bugged me. For some reason, they demonized Jenny Lind, who by all accounts was a lovely and talented philanthropist who donated all of the money she made from Barnum.
I guess I made the mistake of reading about Barnum before seeing the film. I think Hugh Jackman is super talented. The dance numbers were fun, I liked parts of it, didn’t love everything.

All. The. Love. For this movie. I have a huge movie hangover. I go to the movies quite a bit. This is hands-down, the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. I adored every. single. song. When does that happen? Seriously. I can't quit gushing. Lisa

We loved it. Even DH, who turned to me and said, "I didn't know this was going to be a musical." LOL But we enjoyed the musical numbers and thought it was well done. A nice holiday diversion.

I thought Hugh Jackman was BORN to play this role! He was amazing in it. Critics be damned! I want to go see it again. Told my dd after that we need the soundtrack!

I've been listening to the soundtrack on YouTube; I will definitely buy it, but just haven't had a chance yet.

We went to see it last night and both loved it. DH said as we left the theatre that it was very 'Moulin Rouge goes to the Circus', which I thought was pretty much it. I have love Hugh Jackman since seeing him in Boy from Oz way, way back and he was brilliant again. DH has had the soundtrack playing on Spotify all morning!

Partially based on this thread, I ended up seeing the movie yesterday with my daughter. While I understand why the critics didn't love it, we really enjoyed it for what it was - two hours of escapism with fun singing and dancing. I love Hugh Jackman and he didn't disappoint. Loved the whole cast, although I wish Michelle Williams had more to do (I think she's a fantastic actress).

I think I'm going to see it again this weekend! I've listened to the soundtrack a few times, so I won't have to concentrate quite so much on making out the lyrics next time I see it.
I started looking for 'making of' videos on YouTube, and found this- It's pretty powerful to see the performers getting so emotional in a 'behind the scenes' performance!
This is Me-- first time hearing it live; first time Keala Settle sang it in public... in a workshop session to get the movie greenlit

Hugh wasn't supposed to even be singing but couldn't help it. I love the emotion and joy in the room.

lol- I did see that one!! Watching the look on his face... the other guy was singing his part for him, but he just couldn't help himself- it was great seeing the emotions on his face.
I've been watching various videos related to this movie for about the last hour, with the TV on mute. JOY is a perfect word to describe the feeling of the movie itself, and the infectious nature of the music-- their joy comes through the music and lyrics LOUD and CLEAR. I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy it a LOT more the second time around, knowing all I know about it now. (how Hugh Jackman wanted to do this movie for almost 10 years-- long before he did Les Miserables-- and he never gave up on getting it done, and how hard they worked to learn all the dance numbers, Zendaya and Zac Ephron actually learning some of the trapeze stuff...)

It’s on my list! I loved Moulin Rouge too...we are going to a midnight sing along performance for NYE this year...can’t wait. Guess what? WE'RE GOING TOO!!!!! Oh, I'm so excited I could pee my pants! I just told hubby that one of the peas is going to a Moulin Rouge singalong. He asked me where it is, and I said I didn't know. So I looked it up, then with bated breath went through the ticket purchase process and. . . we got tickets! Oh my word! We have a history with this film. We saw it three times at the movies. First time was just hubby and I, second time was us plus our 2 girls and one of their good friends, and third time was all four of our girls (his 2 and my 2). Hubby's older daughter started sobbing during the film and kept going until long after we left the theater. I'm so terrible. . . I kept laughing because her sobbing was so intense (I didn't let her hear but I couldn't help myself). It is, as I already said, MY FAVORITE MOVIE EVER! And I think that's true for both my DD's too. They are coming as well. So, cmpeter , I guess I'll see you there? I'm presuming this is the same show we're talking about; only one search result came up for this. Hubby was willing to travel to go, but it's RIGHT HERE!!!! Can you tell I'm excited? Did you go? Did you two meet? Did one of you sit behind the other and throw popcorn in her hair?

I avoided reading this thread until I saw the movie - went Sunday with 2 friends and we all loved it. One of my friends downloaded the soundtrack while the credits were rolling. My pastor saw and went back the very next day and saw it again.
I loved all the music and scenes but one of my favorite scenes/numbers was the one in the bar with Barnam and Carlyle doing the shots.

Loved, loved, loved it. Yes, we have seen it 3 times. It is historically inaccurate, but this movie makes me sooo happy. Hugh Jackman is simply phenomenal in it. He was born for this role! The third time was a matinee and the theater was almost empty and we sang our hearts out

Joining the love fest...I LOVED this movie. It was so wonderful and I left feeling so happy and full of joy. DO see this in the theater if you want to see it. That's how it's meant to be seen. I just saw it on Saturday and cannot wait to own it on Blu Ray. I've been playing the soundtrack at home too. It's amazing!!!!

I loved it so much I saw it two nights in a row when hubs was out of town. PT Barnum was not the saint he's as portrayed here, but it's not a documentary. If I want the real scoop on PT Barnum, I'll check Wikipedia. If I want to be entertained I'll see this movie.

Saw this with my 13 year old daughter who already had the soundtrack memorized. She was crying by the end and said that was not what she was expecting. Said it was so much better now knowing how the songs connected to the story. She's a theatre kid so loves musicals.

I saw it with my adult daughter and we found it to be great, escapist fun. I can see why the critics might not have loved because it's not deep, but hey - many critics praised Three Billboards and Mudbound, and both those movies made me want to stick my head in an blender.
