I've thought briefly about buying a Halloween costume for my cats this year. They'd have to share though, and to be honest I don't know if they'd even allow me to TRY and get it on them The most expensive thing I've purchased for them is a wonderful scratching post. Best one I've ever purchased in my decades of having cats. SCRATCHING POST I made a 16" round cushioned perch for them on the top and they like it a lot. I have this same scratching post. My boss gave it to me when she got her cats declawed. I had no idea it was so expensive. I'd love to see a picture of the perch you made for the top.

Gosh I guess I am cheap. My most $ items were probably the matching Costco cat trees at $150. I had to buy two cause my 4 cats were fighting over them.

This...and it suckedDestructosaurus my hiney!! Tucker had that thing gutted and strewn over the living room floor in under 5 minutes. It was a massacre of epic proportions. We got it for him because he was destroying every toy we got him. We thought for sure we'd found a challenge for him but it turned out to be yet another miserable fail. We cremated our Golden with the very same toy we brought him home with as a puppy so we just were VERY ill-prepared for Captain Destructo!! Now that he's 8 he has FINALLY outgrown his habit of shredding his toys, and has accumulated a very cute collection of stuffies. Lol. We've just given up on this since my dog's very favorite thing in the whole world (besides eating chicken) is unstuffing her toys. One year at Christmas my sister proudly announced that she'd found a dog toy with no stuffing. I didn't have the heart to tell her that Simba probably wouldn't play with it for more than a few minutes. lol. So we just buy the cheapo toys from the Petsmart sale section and let her unstuff them. She never eats the stuffing so we don't have to worry about that. I'm always amazed to see that she can still get stuffing out of a toy that I thought was completely gutted. We tried those flatties with Tucker, too...after he ate the arms, ears, nose and legs off he wanted nothing more to do with them!! He was over them very quickly. It was kind of funny to watch him work over a toy...ripping, spitting out the pieces and then going back for more. He NEVER ate anything...just shredded and destroyed, thank goodness. I don't know what possessed us to KEEP dishing out money for his habit, but the light bulb finally went on one day and we went several years without buying him anything to destroy...I mean play with. At Easter this year we tried one.more.time and SURPRISE! He is very non-destructive now. I have no idea why, he just seems to have outgrown the need to shred and has gone to licking them to death

When we had the little dogs, an automatic water filter water bowl. It was $64 and it was a pain in the butt didnt use it very long and didnt consider it for the big dogs. Vet bills well thats a whole different book!

I wish this was a funny or sweet story but the most I spent on my cat Cleo was to send her over the Rainbow Bridge and then bring her ashes home in a pretty box. I wish it was funny or cute, but alas, it's not.

I knew I shouldn't come back to this thread...it's dangerous territory! I am seriously considering getting on of those backpack carriers. I live right in the middle of town and therefore don't need a car and the vet is walking distance - only two blocks but Angelique is a PITA in a normal carrier, she sits at one end or the other and is very difficult to carry. Dad has always been around to drive me if I needed it, but he's terminally ill now so I won't have that option in the future. I've often thought a backpack would be a perfect solution and wondered how I could fasten straps to the current carrier. Now I know where to get one, it's very very tempting. The more I looked at that site, the more I liked it and the product they make. And I take back my jabs at a bird backpack. It does make sense to have a carrier for your birds after I read some of the instances for making them. Even strapping them to a stroller makes sense. Like you, getting multiple big birds to the vet isn't always easy. And once you have a pet, you want to take full responsibility for their lives. (Well, most of us would) Like the girl in California that had that emergency pack made to carry her dog down the fire escape, you might just need to evacuate quickly and need something to transport your very expensive and much loved birds. I had a beautiful Cockatoo when I was married. I did take her back and forth to the vet, but I just had the one big bird and used her travel cage. A padded carrier sure would have made it easier and lighter. And I like that they have a metal tiny mesh that they use on the bird carriers. My Cockatoo would have ripped a normal screen in seconds, but the metal cloth would have worked for her. I think a carrier for your cat makes perfect sense. Especially if you don't drive. In the event of a fire, it would be much easier to get the cat out on your back, leaving your hands free to negotiate your escape. My sister's ranch is up in a high fire area. They have had to evacuate their home almost yearly since they bought it. She has horses and there is a man that owns a huge ranch in a flat area just outside the valley that always opens up his place for all the horses evacuated. He maintains his property well and he is out of the high danger area. There has never been a brush fire there. But she also has cats and dogs that she can easily get to jump in the back of her van, but without some type of carrier, she has to keep them in her van. I sent two big dog carriers left from my Weimaraners, but she has 8 dogs on the ranch right now. On that beautiful cat tree that you have, do your cats ever pull the carpet fibers out of it, creating a bare spot and a mess on the floor under it? That is my biggest beef with any cat tree I've ever owned. I vacuum them weekly and have a special comb to get the cat hair out of the cracks to keep the thing neat and tidy, but I can't do anything about them using it as a claw post. I have considered just removing the carpet on all the uprights and replacing it with some sisel, but haven't gotten around to it. And I have easily spent over $700 on cat trees over the years. How long have you had this one and does it shed at all?

Our most expensive thing would be the $100 crate ... Lucy loves her crate Of course, we also feed her premium dog food so I'm handing over more than $65 everytime I visit the store ... which is often since she weighs 90 lbs

Enclosing the front deck and the garden for the cats. Probably cost us about $700 all up. DH was lucky and scored the metal framework and the back fence from the offcut bin at work. Definately the best thing we ever did though...they spend every fine day out there, snoozing under the ferns. I spend most weekends out there with them, lol. ladypop, I haven't forgotten that you promised us a picture of your cat garden earlier this summer. I plan on holding you to that promise too! I would love to be able to build something like that for my kitties. I'm really interested to see how you have enclosed it.Although, the few times that someone has left my front door open, my cats sit in the doorway, peeking out very curious, but they don't venture out. They are 8 now, and their idea of a good time seems to be just sprawling out on my bed or sitting on their cat tree looking out my bedroom window. But if I had a chair out there in the garden for myself, I think they would absolutely come out too. My cats are pretty attached and they do come when I call their names. I just recently got the idea to add a big sturdy shelf up under my high window. My bedroom has a normally placed window, then a triangular-shaped one above that the goes all the way up to the vaulted ceiling. That top window doesn't open, but I thought the cats would like to sit on a shelf and look out since it will then be the highest place in the room they can get to. I just need to get the time for an Ikea trip to get a shelf and top it with something they can grip. That's as close to getting outside as they will get for now, I'm afraid.

We live in a pier home built in the '30's. The front porch has runs the front of the house and has 6 stairs from the ground to the porch. Our dog can no longer climb steps so we had a cement ramp put on the side of our house that leads to the side door and the end of the front porch. The contractor who built the ramp thought we were nuts, but dh says this is our forever home and we may need the ramp one day. It cost about $10k. Jennifer That is awesome!

I have clothes for my dogs, but I wouldn't pay more than $20 for any one item. Gadget usually scratches the heck out of them and Pearl wears them until they are totally stretched out and worn thin (they do last for years though). I don't buy fancy clothes for her no lace or anything like that. I think she would hate them. I do have a really cute kinda fancy dress that a friend of mine gave me and I put it on her when we travel or go somewhere out side the house. At home she wears dresses made out of cotton that is easy to wash and comfortable to wear. how ever she only wears pink. she is very picky.
Now as far as carriers go I think the most I spend was the $80 on Gadget's stroller. I had to have it and it has been a god send. I can put all 3 of them in it if I need to but mostly Gadget spend a few months in it when he had his hip injury and surgery last summer.
I made a lot of their clothes and it can be spendy when buying material.

I'm getting ready to head out of town and don't really have time to upload and post pics. I picked up a round 16" wood disc at Home Depot for about $4-$5. Then cut a piece of 2" foam to a round shape. I bought a square pre-packed piece from JoAnn's for half price. I think I paid about $4-$5 for it as well. Covered it with a piece of inexpensive beige fleece (so it would blend in and not show fur as much). Stapled it to the back of the wood and then attached it to the top wood piece of the post. It lives behind a sofa back table, right next to the window so the cats can peek out the window. Because the whole thing is beige and kind of tucked back into a corner it's not very noticeable. I've tried moving it to the bedroom, but they won't use it there. So...it's part of the living room decor :/ Hope this helps a bit!

I love all these stories! Well, not the sad ones, but it is lovely to see that there are others who treat their fur babies so well. Thankfully, my dogs are pretty low maintenance, even though they are Yorkies. I keep them groomed short and take them maybe twice a year to the groomers, so just about $100 a pop each time (for both). My damn cats, however, are the sicky ones. I adopted them as a pair when they were about 7-8, and I swear, I've taken both to the vet so many times. Nothing too serious, but like allergy type stuff generally. How the heck do indoor cats get freaking allergies? Lol! But I love them and they're my responsibility. My dogs do have a wardrobe, though they don't really wear stuff on a regular basis. They have Halloween costumes (my favorite was their Grease coats from last year, T-Bird and Pink Ladies), assorted coats and sweaters, and then some silly stuff. I have a few dress type things for the girl. But the only stuff I really put on them for function is sweaters in the winter when I feel they're cold, lol. My fiancé makes fun of the fact that they have a whole drawer of clothes and stuff, but I just ignore him. I think the most I've ever spent is around $20 for a piece, if that. I generally just buy it if I think it's cute

No, even after 5 years use by two cats not a single fiber has been pulled and there are no bare patches...I think that is part of what makes them so expensive, he uses a good quality carpet and even cat breeders (so it gets scratched a lot more than ordinary) say that they never wear out. Some people have had theirs for well over 10 years and they say they are still in perfect condition. Even when a second hand one comes up on eBay, they sell for almost full price. The only thing I have to vacuum is the collection of shed cat claws at the bottom!

A piece of artwork from Chile. We didn't intend to give it to the dog, but he had other ideas and put his teeth marks all over it to show ownership.

The most expensive thing for my pet WAS MY PET!!! Lol. My hubby and I have always wanted a English Bulldog and we found one on Mother's Day 2012. The day before we were going to adopt a Doberman Pincher but that fell through and we kind of fell in to this deal last minute.

DH put in a pretend window, using a mirror, and Achilles spends hours admiring the handsome stranger in the next garden, lol.
