Lol. Not for running though, just walking. But I'm hoping to do it at a fast walk. It's Thanksgiving day, a Turkey Trot organized by a neighborhood church to raise money for the shelter that's in our neighborhood, and for the local food pantry. The route goes right by my house and every year I go out front to watch and cheer, and every year I say "I need to do this next year." So this is "next year". Now I need to get in better shape! I'm thinking that if I walk at least 2 miles every day between now and then (2 miles is the route I regularly take) it should be doable, don't you think? Keeping in mind that I just started exercising, so when I say "the route I regularly take" I mean the one that I recently mapped out and that I've only been doing for a couple of weeks. (and NOT every day). lol.
Go me.

Sounds like a good plan! Maybe consider taking a day or two off each week. Best of luck with your training.

Go for it...and I challenge you to take it one step further and run it...even if only for a little bit. I did my first Turkey Trot in 2008 as a walk/run at 240 pounds and the sense of accomplishment was amazing, especially since I thought I'd never be able to do it. Completed the 10K last year, ran the whole time. Awesome feeling to do something you never thought you'd be able to do! Best motivation for the Turkey Trot is envisioning turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing later on! And pie...lots of pie!!!

You could probably do the 5K right now with no training -- if you're able to walk 2 miles, another mile would be fairly easy.
Training would help you walk faster, and be a greater aerobic exercise. But don't get too rigorous with yourself too quickly. If you're walking 2 or 3 days each week, commit to walking 3; then up it in a couple of weeks to 4 or 5 days a week.
Turkey trots are fun! Lots of people here dress up in costume! My friend and her daughter walk in orange and brown tutus, and I passed a guy with a great turkey hat last year. You can do this!

I think this means you need to start posting on the Runners and Walkers thread. I am trying to make a regular habit of posting on the weekly thread because it helps keep me motivated and accountable. I am a walker, not a runner. My knees don't like running. I am a speedy walker and usually walk 5 days a week. I take off on the weekends.
Good luck!! I know you can do it!

Good for you! I did our Local Ghost and Goblins 5K last year. I'm a walker also and plan signing up again this year!

Yay! Most of the runs are friendly to walkers now. But you've got a good amount of time to train to run. Look into the Galloway method. It's a run/walk method. Very easy on the body.

I will post in the runners/walkers thread. I'll be starting my walking routine tomorrow. Morning. Early. So I can't put it off all day like I did today. Have I mentioned that I hate to exercise? oy

Great job! Sounds like you'll be able to do it easily if you can already do 2 miles. If you do choose to try a little bit of running, do look into the Galloway method like a PP mentioned. It stresses run/walk. The first 5k I did I walked the whole time. The second one I did I run/walked. Then I did a 10k, also run/walking. But I finished! I really didn't think I'd finish the 10k under the pace time allotted, but I did! It was a great feeling

Good for you! I really want to sign up for one too. I'm just starting to try and exercise and lose some weight, so I'm not quite sure I'm ready yet. I'll definitely be doing one soon though.
Good luck,
Anita

I'm so excited for you!! You'll do great - if you're already walking 2 miles a day, you've got this and I agree that you could easily run some of it!! Get an official time, a t-shirt and you'll be so hooked!! Yes, come over to Yoki's Runners & Walkers Thread - it keeps me inspired!

Lol. I just googled Galloway. I see his 5k training schedule. um.... Day 1 "walk or XT". That's fine, although I don't know what XT is. But day 2 -- "run 10-15 minutes" roflolololol. So, where is the "couch potato" training method? Run 10-15 minutes. hahahahahaha best joke I've heard today. (I'm sure it has to be there on his site, I'll go back and look. lol) eta: yes, I found the beginner's training schedule. "Day 1: 10 min walk/run" -- "Day 2: 15 min walk" -- Yes, I do believe I can do that.

"Day 1: 10 min walk/run" -- "Day 2: 15 min walk" -- Yes, I do believe I can do that. XT = Cross Training. So, this means weight lifting, biking, swimming, any exercise other than running. and, with Galloway, any amount of specified "running" is always run-walk-running. So, if the plan calls for 10-15 minutes of running, that means 10-15 minutes of running 0:30-walking 1:00, or whatever intervals you start with. Same if the program calls for running 1 mile - you run-walk-run it!

Ya know.....you could probably train to run the 5k by then. You have plenty of time to do your own version of a Couch to 5k program.
If you have a running store in your area, they often have these types of programs or you can easily find one on line. Pinterest has several links.
You will do GREAT at this event and I know it is exciting to start something like this!!! Make sure you have great shoes and socks and stay really hydrated that week leading up to the run. I know it will be cooler in November but you still need to hydrate!
Best of luck and have fun! meredith
