I'm seriously comtemplating doing three 42 hour fasts per week for all of lent. I already do them about every other week and it's hard, but I think I can do it. My husband gave me a "wth?" face when I mentioned it.
I told him I think he should give up talking politics online, I think his head would implode.

42 hours or 24 hours? I fast one day per week as it is. I don't participate in Lent, but my friends are talking about doing the 40 bags in 40 days decluttering challenge.

Like, eat sunday dinner, skip Monday, eat lunch on Tuesday. I tried to do the 40 bags in 40 days last year, I should do that again.

I usually “take something up “ rather than give up (it’s probably considered the same as sacrifice of time or money). I’ll volunteer extra or donate more $$$.
I’ve always tried to make sure my sacrifice would benefit others (which is why I just don’t give up things like candy or food or something like that exclusively). If I give up something that personally only affects myself (let’s say spending money on art supplies) I’ll give the $$$ I saved (or didn’t spend) to charity.
I’ve kept a calendar where I’ll make a kindness “thing” notation every day during Lent, and each day have something different, but something I can do easily but with big impact like:
Let coworkers go home early/cover the rest of their work
Buy someone lunch,
Grab a friends family dinner and drop off on the way home
Do another’s chores for that day
Meditate for 30 minutes—
I fill each day with something to do (faith in action)

I gave up soft drinks for Lent four years ago and never went back. I'd like to say I could give up coffee but I work nights and weird hours and I can't subject my co-workers to me w/out coffee for that long. I thought I could give up cursing. Too dam hard and have you met the fools I work with? My dh and I did the Purpose Driven life 2 years ago. Well, more like we tried. Our schedules are just so crazy we just couldn't keep it consistent. We enjoyed it but couldn't get through it.
I gave up sweets a few years ago and that was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I am leaning towards that again this year. I do love my sweets so this is probably what I should do.

In my denomination -- PCUSA (Presbyterian), but many mainlines are the same -- we don't "give up" for Lent, we "take on". Besides what my church is doing, all of us together, I haven't decided personally yet.

What’s the 40 bags in 40 days? It’s a challenge to get 40 bags’ worth of clutter out of your house in 40 days. Some days it might be a garbage bag, others maybe a grocery bag. www.whitehouseblackshutters.com/40-bags-in-40-days/

My chocolate candy addiction is in full force, so I think I will likely give that up again and try to stick with it.

My chocolate candy addiction is in full force, so I think I will likely give that up again and try to stick with it. Yes, I usually try to give up sweets and most junk food. With yesterday's sighting of Cadbury's mini eggs at Wal-Mart, it really will be a sacrifice for me to consistently say no to candy for 40 days. And I am going to try (operative word) to be a kinder and gentler person, especially to those around me who honestly make me want to pinch their heads off!

I give up my Friday nights, I volunteer every week at our Fish Fry. My day is extremely long, get up at 4:50 start work at 6:30, leave work at 3:00 go directly to the fish fry and help prep. I then fill orders for the servers (we serve on real dishes rather than a buffet line) from 4:30-7:00. We take a quick break for the workers to eat, then it's clean up time. Clean up typically takes until around 10:00 pm. It's a very long day!

I am giving up junk food and I may try to fast 1 day a week. So don’t hold me to it. I want to do the 40 bags for 40 days and get my house totally organized.

My DH and I were talking about fasting also.
This will be my second year doing the 40 bags challenge. We've combined households so I'm sure it won't be a problem!

Our church also advocates taking something on. I'm not bragging, but our family does a lot of volunteering already so instead of adding on another big time commitment, I'm thinking of writing a Thank you note/personal note to people. Neighbors, friends, family, service members, people in service industries, etc. Short, simple and hopefully lifts their day.
I do like the 40 days/40 bags idea as well though! I can see my DH going through each bag to make sure I wasn't tossing any of 'his' stuff. This is why we deep clean when he's out of town for work.

Not all "religious peas" observe Lent. Correct. I have never given up anything for Lent. Our pastor asked last night in Bible Study if we were giving up anything, and I said no that I never do. It’s certainly not required but I do love the idea of 40 bags now that I have heard of it.

I know that fasting is the big thing right now and you do whatever you want but three 42 hour fast per week doesn’t seem very healthy to me but I am not a doctor so maybe you should ask your doctor before you start that .

I used to give up things but now I do something. If I don't usually give food to the pantry every week, I might do this. I might find a way to volunteer to help others. I might go to daily Mass.
I feel like doing something is like giving up what I used to do and now I do this in addition.

I used to give up meat on Fridays in Lent ( I think it was the *rules* back in the day ). Then I would keep it up and not eat meat on Fridays year round. I think I'll do that and try to keep it up after Lent.

Not all "religious peas" observe Lent. Is there a backstory here? That's kind of a strange thing to offer as a reply when someone is looking for ideas for ways to observe Lent.

The thread is titled "Religious peas... What are you giving up for lent?" The assumption is that all religious peas observe Lent. I'm simply pointing out that not all do. Generally, Lent is observed in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Methodist, and Roman Catholic Church. That does not nearly encompass all religious peas. That's all.

The reason why I asked the way I did was because I didn't want it to turn into a "I don't give up anything for lent because religions are stupid" thread. Guess I was wrong and it can happen anyway. I sometimes forget to look at the name on the door before I enter this place.

I haven't decided yet. My church advocates is like some of y'alls - they advocate taking something on. I am actually leaning, though, to cutting out cokes and extra sugar. I usually can keep a good balance, but here lately I've noticed Im reaching for cokes + junk more than I need to be.

I sometimes forget to look at the name on the door before I enter this place. In no way did I say, hint at, or insinuate, that "religions are stupid." Shame on you for alluding that I did. I happen to be quite religious and belong to a Christian church. We don't observe Lent. If I have misunderstood the intent of your comment, I apologize. I don't, however, believe I have.
