I would like to digitize about 20 albums (really full).
I have thought about doing something like ScanCafe, but can't bring myself to part with them.
I could buy a large-format scanner and scan to thumb drive?
I know there are scanning apps that allow you to just photograph them, but my phone doesn't have much storage - so not sure how much of a pain that would be.
Has anyone done this who can offer some advice?
Thanks very much.

Hmm. I've never done this but if I were going to do it I would try and update my phone storage first. It would be the cheapest route.

I've been slowly scanning my completed albums - BUT I scrap 8.5x11 so I can use a standard scanner.
Is there a Kodak photo kiosk near you? I haven't used them for this but I think you can scan photos (or in your case layouts) and transfer to CD/DVD - not sure what the maximum size is though

Look at the machines at Staples or a copy center, if they have the wide scanners, you can scan yourself using their machines and just pay per scan to a USB drive. Or take photos with a camera, white foam board and good natural light. Or take photos with your phone and maybe an app like PicScanner Gold that Angie Lucas mentioned on IG. You don't have to keep ALL the photos on your phone forever. Upload them to Dropbox or Google Photos as needed.

Just like caspad said I would use my phone but automatically upload them to a cloud like Dropbox, Google, Amazon Photos etc. I would also back them up on my external hard drive. I always like to have photos/documents in at LEAST 2 places.

I would talk to someone at a photography place. I scanned a bunch of 8 1/2" pages with my home printer/scanner and they did not come out nearly as crisply as the ones scanned by our local shop. Don't know if any of the Kodak kiosks can handle 12x12? When I photograph my own pages, I have trouble getting the photo completely lined up (tip my phone one direction or the other and then that side/corner is skewed larger than the rest of the LO in the photo.) If you are going to photograph all those pages yourself, it might be worth investing in one of those light(?) boxes where your camera or phone is positioned at the top and you lay your page flat on the bottom. justjac was researching them a couple of years ago.

Creative Memories now does this and the results are amazing! I watched a demonstration at a crop recently. They have a big black covered box type thing that your book is put in. You don’t have to take your album apart or take the page protectors off. My rep has the software on her phone. She lays it on a hole on top of the box and it snaps away. It also color corrects old colored pictures such as the ones stuck in those magnetic albums. Everything is stored in the Cloud. I have seen a printed book and it is wonderful. I am going to have my heritage albums scanned so my family can order one or they can view online. Here’s a link to learn more. It is not cost prohibitive and they runs deals quite often. My rep will come to your house and do it or I can give her my books to take home. www.legacyrepublic.comwww.forever.comwww.forever.com/deals

Thanks all. Still looking. Wide format scanners that I've found seem to be very expensive. I could get a scan and cut, but the resolution is low and it's a feed-in scanner, which would be hard w/dimension on pages.
I've called Fedex/Kinkos, Costco, and Staples and none of them handle 12x12.
Search continues. Please let me know if you find more options.
THANK YOU!

i just received my scan n cut yesterday. The resolution is 300 I believe but I don’t think you could put a page in there. I’ll let you know as I learn more.

I used to scan my 12x12 on a smaller format scanner. I'd scan in one side, save it, scan the other side, save it, then use the MERGE tool with Photoshop Elements to merge the two together. That was back when 2 peas gallery was around!! I'm not sure PSE program has a merge tool anymore. I switched to digital layouts and have them printed into books.

I've been trying to figure out the best way to do the same thing. I finally decided that I need some wall tack putty, whatever it is called. I will use that on the back of each layout, stick my pages to the wall, position my camera on a tripod, and take a photo of each page. It will need to be done in good lighting, but it would be easier than trying to scan with a scanner and less costly than a service. The camera will work better than a scanner, especially for those pages that have embellishments that are a little bulky.

To minimize the lens distortion you need to get back away from it and use the zoom lens to come back in to fill the frame, squaring it up as much as you can. There will still be a little distortion at the corners but it is quickly and easily fixed in PSE by grabbing the corner handles and pulling the image out square. Once it’s printed you can’t even tell it was distorted. I put my layouts flat on a table under good lighting (natural light is best) and stand on a step stool to get up high enough to put enough distance between the lens and the surface of the layout.

OMG, what a wonderful project and yet just the thought of it makes my head spin and my eyes roll back in my head. I have so many albums I can't even conceive of ever living long enough to scan the pages.
Maybe when I am retired I will consider photographing the layouts with a camera or phone and then putting them on an external hard drive. But I am probably kidding myself to think I will get to that. And yet it is far more likely my sons would take photo books of layouts with them before they would even consider taking those albums.

I have so many albums I can't even conceive of ever living long enough to scan the pages. I know what you mean. I have a ton of albums, too, and it seems overwhelming. I also know, however, that even a mammoth project can be accomplished and completed a little at a time. It's easier than it seems. I had at least 2,000 wood mounted rubber stamps. I knew we were going to be moving halfway across the country, and we'd be paying the cost of moving ourselves. Those wood mounted stamps were going to be too much weight and take up too much space, but I did not want to get rid of them. The thought of unmounting 2,000 stamps, though, seemed absolutely crazy and overwhelming. I did several at a time, a day here and a day there. I eventually got them all done but a few, which are still waiting to be done. I love having all my stamps unmounted. It's easier to find what I want. Even more importantly, I learned that even a huge, overwhelming task can be accomplished if you do a little at a time. I want to photograph all my pages and turn them into digital files. I will have to do it the same way, here a little and there a little.

I’d like to digitise my Mum’s 12x12 Scrapbooks at some stage because they are big to store and I’m sure my niece would like some of the photos but not the bulk. I’ll probably just try photographing them myself and making some photo books.

Back in the old 2 Peas, I scanned my layouts on the office copier/scanner. It could print and scan 11x17 and the scan area was actually a little bit larger like 11.5" ish. Only about 1/4" from the top and bottom (or sides) was cut off and that worked well for my purposes. Even though Staples says they don't do 12x12, they probably can scan 11x14 just fine.
