Twice a day. My dog gets breakfast and dinner, in addition she gets treats throughout the day and always has some dry food available in her bowl.

Omg!!! I have been a horrible dog mother feeding them only once a day. It was something I thought about when I was eating my first meal of the day, and they did not eat until the afternoon. But like I said, that was what I knew. Everyone else that I know, in not so recent history, has fed their dogs once a day. Free feed and always have with all our dogs. None has ever been overweight and potty training was not an issue. I don't free feed, but one of my dogs will not eat more than he needs during his meal. He usually eats it later, but when he is done, he is done, no matter how much food is left. On the other hand, my girl dog eats anything and everything, and then wants more. Always twice a day. My understanding is only serving one big meal a day increases the potential for bloat. Oh good point. My girl dog eats her food at lightning speed. I stick a water bottle in her bowl, but plan an getting her one of the maze-like bowls.

I feed my my dog twice a day. She always tells me when she is ready to eat. Sometimes it’s first thing in the morning, sometimes she prefers to wait an hour or so. She usually eats her dinner between 3:30 and 4 in the afternoon.

I put food in Louis' bowl every morning- sometimes he eats some of it-most times not. He always get scrambled egg bites while I'm eating. Then at night, he gets whatever meat I cook mixed in with the dog food. So, I guess he has the opportunity to eat twice. He would rather wait and see if he's getting real food first.

This is not a dog parenting fail.

Free feed and always have with all our dogs. None has ever been overweight and potty training was not an issue. Lucy is fed at dinnertime and just grazes until the following dinnertime ... often there is a bit leftover in her bowl the next evening ... she is big (75 lbs) but not hugely overweight

Twice a day, though she would have eaten 222 times a day if we had let her. Garbage hound yellow lab!

I feed my dog 3/4 cup of kibble at 7am, a bowl of veggies, usually broccoli & cucumbers, around 1pm, then another 3/4 cup of kibble around 6pm.

Free feed and always have with all our dogs. None has ever been overweight and potty training was not an issue. We are free feeders to, I fill the bowls ( cat, parrot too) when they get empty. I do have a hog feeder bin to pour a whole bag of food in , but I am fighting pantry moths, so no open food around.

Twice a day. My girl dog has gotten over weight since being fixed so we have her on a diet. I had no idea it would be hard on ME. She's always eaten when I do and would get my left overs. It's killing me to see her face when I put my left over food away. I'm giving her a few dog treats, but I still feel like a bad dog mommy. This whole diet thing is just awful, but the vet says she needs to lose 15 to 20 pounds, so I'm following his advice. She's the dog in the photo thread with DS and her laying on the couch.
All the dogs I've ever had have been free fed and none of them had a problem with weight or over eating. So, this doggy dieting is new for me.

Vet suggested twice a day. Both shih tzus have IBS and food allergies. So they get half a serving am and half pm. 12 hours apart.

Twice. Finnigan pounces on me at 6:30 AM without fail. Then at 6:30 PM he finds me and talks to me u til I feed him. He is the best alarm clock ever. The other two dogs let him do all the work and reap the benefits. That is Sadie and Toby.

When we adopted our Sirius, they told us to do it twice a day. Then when we went to the vet, she said the same thing. My Mom also does this, but my Dad and his wife leave the food bowl down all day. However, they also bring home a cheeseburger from McDs if they eat out, so their dogs are already more spoiled than my dog will ever be. You're doing just fine, regardless.

Breakfast at 7am and dinner at 5pm.
She sits by her bowl at the exact time too. It's freaky.

The two dogs we had for 14 years ate once a day, but our son's dog who stays with us often eats twice a day. She is overweight so she doesn't get more than 3/4 cup at each meal but she does get treats.............................

We feed the roughs 3x a day and the papillon 2x a day. The roughs are more susceptible to bloat so they eat 3x and out of slow feeders. They also cannot go out and play for an hour after eating. Better safe than sorry. I have heard too many horror stories.

We asked our vet when we first got our first pup His response was would you ask anyone or anything to eat only once every 24 hours? He helped us figure out the amount she should have and said to dived by two and schedule it twice daily keeping it to routine times. Did the same when our other little one came along and also with the kitties. Works well and their weight have always remained within ideal weight limits. The two pups are a doxie and a chiweenie mix, food driven breeds and never beg.

We put food in the bowl (they share) in the morning. There is usually some in it already. They eat when they're hungry.
Unless we have my kid's dog staying with us. He's the only dog I've had in 40+ years that empties a bowl as soon as food is placed into it. We have to separate his bowl and protect the other dogs' food while he's here.

My dog is 10. She eats once a day, around 4pm. However, she's gotten kind of annoying lately in that she'll go to her food bowl starting around 2 looking for dinner. So most times now, I do split her meal. I'll give her some to appease her early on and then a bigger chunk of it at her normal dinner time. She also gets lots of tiny treats throughout the day too.

Twice a day. A girl I work with said she doesn't feed her dogs at all on Sundays. She said it doesn't hurt them and keeps them in shape.
That wouldn't fly with my male shih Tzu, if we forget to fill his bowl, he digs in his bowl and heaves a dramatic sigh. If that doesn't get our attention, he drags his bowl into the kitchen to say, hey people, food!
