The past few times I've used my Cameo the auto blade has been coming loose in the middle of a cut. The first time I thought I inserted it wrong, but it's been happening more frequently. Has anyone had this happen? Is it the blade or the machine?

I don't have a Cameo 3, but I have a Portrait 2, and I think they use the same blade. I've never had that problem, though. Did you check to make sure that the clamp that holds the blade/housing is tight? Is the whole housing coming loose, or is it the blade itself?

I don’t have the 3 but recall you have to make sure the auto blade is pushed right down and then lock it in place by pushing the tab thing in. Is it completely locked?

Yes, I've be more careful since it started happening to make sure that the blade is pushed in all the way and then I lock it in place. The last time it happened I was watching it cut and saw that it came loose and lifted out of the housing!

I have the Cameo 2, so it may not be the same, but I have never used the auto blade. I use the premium blade instead. It gives me control, but I also just never quite trusted the auto blade to always get things right. Even so, I am really surprised that our blade managed to unlock itself.
I am wondering if the issue is the blade or the locking mechanism. I would try using either the standard or premium blade to see if it unlocks itself, too. If so, you have a problem with the locking mechanism. If not, there must be something about the auto blade that is the problem.

I searched this issue last night and it seems like I'm not the only one having this problem. I watched a video on YouTube last night that demonstrated exactly what is happening! YouTube Blade PoppingI sent an email to Silhouette. My machine is still under warranty.

So after spending most of the morning in a chat with a Silhouette support person, it was determined that the likely cause of my blade popping is due to the software being corrupt as well as me needing a new mat... Of course the entire time we were chatting and testing, the blade didn't pop once, so I guess I'll try a new mat and see if that helps!

I don't believe it. Not for this. And I didn't believe it for the issue that I called them about either. I think they say that when they don't know what the problem is. I suggest that you try a standard or premium blade for awhile and see if the problem continues. Maybe a new mat would help, but that still seems......odd. Yes, you can update or delete and reinstall your software if you believe the software is the issue, but that seems a stretch to me. Definitely back up any and all files, especially designs that you did not download from Silhouette, before you consider updating or reloading your software.

scrapnnana I agree that they honestly have no idea what the issue is, but at least the guy was thorough and we did a lot of testing, sending photos and videos, etc. Unfortunately the blade didn’t pop once today. Go figure, when you want it to do something it won’t, and I did continue to use it this afternoon, worn mat and all, without any problems. I did realize during all of this testing that I didn’t have an issue with the first auto blade I had been using, the one that came with the machine. This started to happen when I replaced the blade so I’m wondering if the problem lies with this particular blade. I did try the old one, but it is too dull to cut anything. I do like the auto blade so I’ll pick up another one and see if I encounter the problem again. But until then, fingers crossed hoping that it continues to behave.

I don't think it's the software or the mat either. Software issues wouldn't cause the blade to pop out. Neither would an old mat. It sounds like you have a defective blade, since you didn't seem to have any problems with the one that came with the machine. I would try another blade. Maybe it's working now because the blade finally settled into the place it's supposed to be. In any case, I'm glad it's working for you.

riversong1963 I completely agree, and hope it’s the blade and not the machine! Last night when I was cutting some glitter cardstock, guess what... blade popped! So it’s not fixed... but this time I hit the pause button, pushed the blade back in. It worked but apparently I have to pay close attention to the entire cutting process now!
