Ok, not *you* because I"m going to assume you're not the one eating it but ykwim We got this new pup coming soon and I've done my research: asking on forums (it's like the babycenter of the dog world, many of them feed their dogs raw chicken wings), visited the dogfood review site, made a spreadsheet and yet I'm still confused. Our old dog we fed IAMS, but we now know it's not that great of food. I know we need large breed puppy food. I thought Blue Buffalo would be a good choice: rated 4.5, reasonably priced, widely available, a grain-free option if that ends up being necessary. But I guess they lied a few years back, there was a big lawsuit and so a lot of people don't think it's a good choice. Good grief is this all confusing. While you're here, anything else I need to make sure to buy before he comes home? (and if anyone is counting, I think this is my 4th post about this darn dog, I had fewer questions bringing home a human baby )

Yes, after all of that drama we finally landed back on our first choice.... Remington (Remi) The boys are supposed to be coming up with a middle name....heaven only knows what it will be. I told them to consider what it will sound like when we yell "Remington ____ Lastname.....stop chewing my shoe!"

NutriSource is what we feed our dog. Fromm is also another good brand we’ve had luck with. Basically, grain free is the way to go. IAMS is horrid...steer clear of that. And yes, Blue Buffalo has gone way downhill over the years, so I would avoid that brand as well.

I have very mixed feelings about the premium brands. I think most of them are big rip offs.
My dad fed his cat wet and dry Fancy Feast and kitty lived for 20 healthy years. I’m sure many will argue about the value of expensive brands; but I think there is a lot of hype surrounding them. My 2 cents.

Check dogfoodadvisor for sure. We used Fromm for a while but found it didn’t work as well as Acana. Our boys have used Acana now for two years. It’s awesome food!

The Doberman eats Fromm & it has been wonderful for his belly. He had gas & a noisy belly. After I switched him to Fromm food all the gas is gone & tht belly noises have disappeared.
The new Rottweiler pups came with Purina puppy food & they will eat that for a bit then slowly switch to Fromm puppy food. I've had good results with Fromm so I'll stay with it.

Those two are on my list, but way way down it due to cost. Have you found somewhere that has them for a reasonable price? I used Amazon for my comparison pricing.

Where do you purchase Fromm? According to Fromm's site it's available at Pet Supplies Plus and some independent pet stores (they have a search function). But I couldn't find it on psp's site, however, I did find some varieties (not the puppy kind) on petco's site.

Raw Food diet if you can afford it depending on the size of your dog and how many you have. If you have a tiny dog you can do this compared to a Bernese Mountain Dog like my parent's do. I'm talking about one you make yourself from raw meat not a prepacked one. Those have been on a lot of recall lists. Here's a source if you are interested http://www.felineinstincts.com I know it sounds like a cat site but they have a dog formula too.
Otherwise like Patter said do some research on dogfoodadvisor.com They are a great resource. And while you are there see if you can sign up for their email notices that come when a dog food is recalled to your email. I know you used to be able to do that because I signed up for that. Don't know if they are still doing it.

We tried all of the high end and our dog had issues with every one. She was given a raw chicken/veggie diet at the breeder (show dogs) and we tried to keep her on the “top tier” foods. The one she's been on for most of her 11 years? Beneful. She loves it, it never gives her issues and she is as healthy as can be according to our vet.

My one year old lab eats Acana. Large breed puppy food until after she was spayed, and then the vet recommended we switch her to adult food so now she gets Acana Ranchlands. She loves it! But she’s a lab, so of course she loves it.

We used Fromm for a while but found it didn’t work as well as Acana. Louis eats Fromm and loves it. He still gets a little itchy and is on Apoquel. Maybe I should switch him to Acana? Patter- do your dogs have allergies?

Where do you purchase Fromm? My local pet store carries it. I tried to order it from Chewy, but they don't sell it.

I feel like a bad mama sometimes because of the food we feed our dog. It's rated 2 star by the above website. We didn't know that when we started this food. We've tried switching him to a "better quality" food, and we've done it a little at a time like you are supposed to, but by the time we get to about 1/2 and 1/2, he gets sick--diarrhea, throwing up, and no energy. Once we put him on rice for a few days, then back to his "lower quality food" he's fine. We even had some food our vet recommended and tried him on that, and the same thing happened--and it was expensive from the vet!! We've tried about 4 different brands--all with the same result. He does well on the lesser rated brand--and he looks forward to his meals. no diarrhea or throwing up, and maintains a healthy weight. He walked away from the brand we got from the vet--and only ate it because he was starving!! then it made him sick! Poor boy!!
eta--I didn't see the post from imsirius before I wrote this--and Beneful is what we use too. Very low rated food--ugh!!

I feed mine Nutro Grain Free. I do a mix of dry with couple spoons of their wet on top. I’ve been feeeding my Cockers this brand since 2004. I can switch between the different flavors of wet and dry and it doesn’t upset their stomachs. I also give them a fish oil pill in their food at breakfast and dinner to help with their coats and skin.

We use Fromm. I get it from a pet supply store. A bag that lasts a month costs $24.
When we had our Maltese we fed her Beneful for a long time. We thought it was good because it had all the veggies on the bag. Our vet told us it was the McDonald's of dog food. We had to put her on prescription dog food for a long time because she was overweight from it. All of the rust colored staining on her fur went away and her health improved once we switched.
If you're concerned with tummy troubles that occur when you switch foods, you can get pumpkin puree at pet stores to add to your dog's food - just a tablespoon - and it helps with digestion issues during the transition.

We feed our adult Danes Taste of the Wild. Our new rescue puppy is eating Precise Naturals for Large/Giant Breed puppies.
When we brought in Niklaus, he was being fed Dog Chow, which is absolute crap. Since switching to Precise, his poops are firm and healthy., and Precise has the appropriate protein, calcium and phosphorus ratios for a growing Great Dane.

We feed our dog Kirkland's Nature's Domain. It had a slightly higher rating than the regular Kirkland Signature Adult dog food. The Kirkland Signature Mature rated really high, but our Costco doesn't seem to carry it. Just be aware though that TOTW and Kirkland are both made by Diamond who has had several recalls in the past. We haven't had any problems and our dog seems to do fine with the Nature's Domain.

I feed my Dachshunds Wellness Healthy Weight. It’s not the highest rated dog food but I tried Blue Buffalo & it gave them diarrhea. My vet said he never recommends Blue.
Wellness has a grain free but my dogs have done well on the regular healthy weight so I stick with it. I have not heard of a recall from that company.
Good luck with your pup!

Patter- do your dogs have allergies? No, they have sensitive tummies BUT it is also great for dogs with allergies. Check out their Singles line. My boys LOVE the Duck and Pear but they also eat several of the other flavors.

It used to be available on Chewy.com but they now only sell to certain stores (no longer Chewy). The place where my boys go to daycamp now carries it, and I get a discount. But when googling, there are lots of places that have it including Wal-Mart online and you currently get 10% back with ebates. I may need to buy some more that way. Looks up to $30 cheaper a bag. I usually pay about $70 for a large bag, and we go through a bag every 3 weeks. Edited to say: Here is my ebates referral code if you need one. www.ebates.com/r/TRIPLE1968?eeid=28187

Regarding pumpkin for digestion, it works wonders for both dogs and cats and is really good for them. I just buy canned pumpkin at the grocery store, just make sure the ingredients list only pumpkin, don’t buy the pie filling one by mistake, it is full of sugar. I freeze the leftovers in an ice cube tray s one can goes quite a long way.
