How is this class going? I'm so tempted to sign up, love her videos. It's going great! I've made 10 layouts so far. And I can really see myself continuing to kit up my old supplies to use up after the class is over. I usually take a class, do the layouts and then not really use the class after that.

I agree with this although I've made slightly fewer layouts. I normally start my pages with the photos then choose papers to match so it's definitely been an interesting switch to start with papers then choose photos to match. Out of my first kit I had one paper I ended up putting back because I didn't have any photos that worked with it. I've just pulled out my second kit of supplies and am going to start creating as soon as I step away from the computer. I will say it's made it much easier to actually use papers that I've often pulled out but ended up putting back because I either liked them too much or felt there was probably something better in the rest of my stash.

I like the layouts you guys have posted! thanks! I haven't taken any Shimelle classes for a while; I just have too many photos to do one-page layouts, and that looks like what she's typically doing right now. two questions, though, for people who watch her videos regularly or follow her in recent days-- and I apologize if one of them ends up coming out kind of snarky. 1) do we know what her son's name is, yet? I saw on one of her layouts, it was his first day of school, and she had 'wonderboy' in the title. Does she only do that for the sake of showing the layouts to the public in videos? I know she has some people who actually found her in real life, so I understand the need to be private-- I'm just curious what his first name actually is. 2) is she ever going to cut his hair? it's shoulder length! I know, it doesn't really matter, and maybe I'm showing my age with my preference for short hair on little boys, but I just don't like it. And it's so straight, if I was him, that hair would be getting IN MY WAY and IN MY FACE all the TIME!! like I said, just curious, and maybe a BIT snarky.

I’m pretty sure she’s never mentioned his name for privacy reasons. I think the bangs keep keep the hair out of his face. At some point he may decide he wants it cut.

The class has a lot of single photo layouts too, but there are also multi photo layouts and designs that could be easily adapted to more photos (she had one that was a 6x12 photo which easily becomes 3 4x6 photos for example), but so far that is actually the thing I'm struggling with most - finding the right photos. As for your other points 1) She has said she adds his name (or that of his friends) once the layout has been completed and shared online. I actually think giving him the chance to decide what can be easily found online under his name is kind of smart. 2) I'm right there on the bench with you.

She has said she adds his name (or that of his friends) once the layout has been completed and shared online. this makes sense! I was just thinking how strange it would be to have an album full of 'wonderboy' page titles, lol. But in the video I watched earlier today, she did say the name of the little girl he was playing with in the photo, which I thought was kind of odd.

But in the video I watched earlier today, she did say the name of the little girl he was playing with in the photo, which I thought was kind of odd. I can definitely see why she handles things this way. She lives in a big city but they're out and about a lot, and if you know London it wouldn't be hard to figure out roughly where they live. Her name is unique (although she may go by a different married name IRL) so they'd be pretty easy to identify. I don't believe we know her husband's name either. And I've read about other scrap bloggers having people say they figured out where their house was and which school the kids went to, and that would be super creepy. I heard that one time Amy Tan used his real name on an IG story but most people respected their privacy enough that no one who heard it wanted to share the name to others. For the other kids - I imagine their mothers have given the OK (everyone's tolerance is different) and since we know next to nothing about them it's not like using their names are exposing them as much as Wonderboy's would. I think Shimelle may also write a lot of the journaling to him, so his name wouldn't come up so much (but I could be wrong about that). As for the hair, I know two other little boys who have had uncut hair and the old lady in me was wondering when they'd ever cut it, or if there was a reason for it. But I think the kids just liked it long and refused more than a basic trim. And then one day one of them decided he did want a more typical little boy haircut. I personally wouldn't want to take a little kiddo for regular haircuts (and I've seen what a mother with scissors can do - just say NO to home haircuts! ) so I'd probably go along with them if they didn't want it cut.

I think Shimelle has a great teaching style. I’m more of a clean and simple scrapbooker, but I learn so much from her regarding design principles. She also inspires me to work with layers. I am finding this class difficult to really get into, in terms of actually making layouts, and I think this is why. I love the concept, I am really enjoying the videos, but I just don't use bright patterned paper for backgrounds. I guess I can adapt to make it work for me, but need a bit more thinking time.

I think Shimelle is brilliant for never naming her husband or son online and calling them the boy and wonderboy. Honestly wish I’d have thought of that. She is the online personality, not them. But, it is interesting to find out how she handles her layouts and including their names later. When I used to post online for design teams, I would almost always include my journaling after I had prepped the LO for posting. That may be why it seems like some DT folks don’t do much journaling.
ITA about the hair - for most kids that age they just don’t take care of it and it gets tangled and sticky and a mess (girls and boys!). He is adorable but I admit every time I see a photo of him I think “why haven’t they cut his hair yet?!”

Since you don’t use bright and busy papers, maybe you can think about pulling your favorite papers for the background? And then add the papers that compliment the background paper. That way, you can see more of your favorite patterns and still keep with the same concept of making kits for the class.

She said he will introduce himself to people with 'Hi, my name is .... and I am a boy with long hair', so it would seem to be a 'thing' with him. Hair was never a hill I was ready to die on with my kids - I was always of the opinion that it keeps growing, and nothing about it is permanent; color, cut etc. At that age, kids don't have a lot of control over things in their life - if a certain hairstyle keeps the peace, then I would go with it.

Well that’s a cute reason to keep it how he wants it!

I signed up and watched the first video but was traveling for work this past week so couldn't get started on the layouts. I love her classes and two years ago signed up for one (can't remember which one), made a kit of supplies, went on vacation, and completed like 10 layouts during the vacation. I did not spend that much time scrapbooking as we were on vacation but I felt like I accomplished more in that week than I ever have in that time. Her class helped in that I learned several new design principles to help make the layouts faster.

How long does it take for the class to show up on my forum? I signed up on Friday. Usually for Shimelle's classes you get a welcome email within about 24 hours and then you will see it in your forum. If you don't get that by later today, I would send her an email.

I am enjoying this class. Usually I start with the photos so this is different to be starting with paper and then finding photos that work but I've scrapped a bunch of older photos (some really old, like photos of friends in high school and university). I've made 10 layouts so far, which is a huge number for me. The first lesson I found really helpful in terms of figuring out what combination of papers to put in a kit when making my own kits.

I did a better job picking out my 2nd kit after using the first kit up. I agree, I usually start with photos first. I am enjoying using up some paper that always gets pulled out and returned to my stash 😀

I like the layouts you guys have posted! thanks! I haven't taken any Shimelle classes for a while; I just have too many photos to do one-page layouts, and that looks like what she's typically doing right now. I usually make multi photo layouts too. I've found that when I mount my photos in a block of 3 or 4, it's still easy to use her approach. For double page spreads, sometimes I'll use a pocket page for one side (to include as many photos as possible) and my highlight photo(s) on the other side. Using fewer photos on that one side allows me to have some fun and try a different style once in awhile.

I sometimes put 2 photos on the left and then a pocket page or lots of small photos on the right. That way I have some breathing room. The 1 or 2 photo layouts would be my best photos with supporting photos in smaller sizes

I am taking this class while I am really enjoying it, I feel like all the layouts are alike. Every layout is layered with one photo and on a diagonal with with mist splatters in the corners. I just wish it were a little more varied. Like with vertical photos etc. I have thoroughly enjoyed the class and would probably take another by shimelle. I have learned a lot.

Ha....I have thought of both of these things....! I must say though ,I do respect her decision for privacy for her son...I think privacy is a VERY undervalued commodity in society generally. I think we are bombarded with altogether too much personal info about some scrapbook celebs, even to the point of which air freshener they like (!) so I think a bit of mystery is not only good but sensible.
