Agreed, she should have kept them art work pieces. That is what they do at my son's school. If they do sent anything home, by the time it gets shoved in a backpack and then makes it way to my dining room table, it could be in rough shape.
I usually take photos of the the artwork and toss it eventually.

It should have never been sent home in the first place. A note attached to it wouldn't have done any good. You want it for something down the road, you store it at school not my house!

My oldest is 19 & my youngest is 14; I still have art projects from preschool : So, most likely I wouldn't have had a problem with returning a piece. However, I know not everyone saves like I do, so I think the teacher is being unreasonable to expect all the artwork to be returned. She should have kept it at school.

The art teacher is out of line. Once it goes home, she can't expect it back. I probably would have been able to return the art piece as that is something I would probably hang onto over a random worksheet or scribble. But the teacher was insane to think everyone would do that. Not everyone has the space to keep everything. Does she realize how much art comes into a house? And if there are multiple kids what that means? And if you are talking sixth grade, I would probably have let my kid do whatever with it rather than filing it away like I do for my kids who are younger. If my kid asked to save it, of course. But honestly I would have given it back to my kid after admiring it and allowed her to do anything she wanted with it. Well... in My house when mine were school aged, how long an art project was saved depended on how the artist/creator felt about it. Things my child was very proud of was saved much longer than things my child was not emotionally invested in. A LOT of school art projects were considered dreary homework by the creator and they weren't interested in it being kept. OFten it didn't even make it home. I agree.

Not very long, depends on the quality. I just threw out a bunch my own preschool thru jr high projects. Why keep them all?
That teacher is kookoo for cocopuffs if she thinks they were going to come back to her.
