I'll do that when they stop selling toilet paper and not a moment before.
Also, if they're only using it for pee, I would think the amount of money saved in tp vs the cost of laundering would be negligible.

I can get behind using it for wiping after pee. The thought of me using it to wipe after a poop and then throwing it in a hamper to be washed later is grossing me right out. But if other people want to do that they can go right ahead. It’s like using cloth diapers. No biggie.
But why, WHY is it called Family Cloth??? That is a terrible name! It leaves me feeling like it’s just one big towel that everyone in the house wipes their butt on. Like those old hand towels in gas stations. Grody.

No way! Maybe if I had a bidet, but not with a regular toilet.

Someone I knew from a parenting board 16 years ago did this. Flannel butt wipes she called them. I have had 16 years to get used to the idea, but I think it would take some sort of apocalyptic scenario before I resorted to that. Although, I’ve heard great things about bidets and would consider that option before washable turd rags. 😬

We did cloth diapers and loved it, so conceptually, I shouldn't have a problem with it. But... I do. I absolutely do. No way in hell.

I used to say there are 2 things companies could easily charge a small fortune for: toilet paper and tampons/pads; because you simply can't not buy them. Turns out I was wrong, people found alternatives. Me? I'll gladly pay whatever I need to because I'll never give up toilet paper (rarely need the other due to IUD).

The more I think about this, the less gross I find it. I was just complaining to DH about the dust generated by toilet paper. This could be my solution. I hate dust more than I hate laundry.

Agreed. Family cloth. Family bed.
Also reminds me of the stories my grammie would tell us about the olden days and things like family menstrual pads.

I agree that the name is terrible, it does make it sound like everyone shares the same one. I do think that if a whole family is using cloths every time they go to pee the resulting laundry would be considerable and between the water and the electricity and the labor the savings might not be too much. So, not for me. I would be ok with cloth napkins though.

I don't use family cloth, but I personally love my cloth feminine pads and wish I had started using them years ago instead of just as I was entering perimenopause. I wear a cloth panty liner every day. The disposable pads are horrible on my skin after wearing for just a short time. I guess I'm just a sensitive girl.

Thought of one more reason why ‘family cloth’ won’t ever be happening here, and that would be C-DIFF. DD had it once. It’s nasty, highly contagious and I don’t need more than one person in my house dealing with that at the same time. There isn’t enough bleach in the world for me to be okay with using the same butt wipe cloth as someone with a c-diff infection, even after it was washed with bleach. Nope.

The part about how they stain was totally gag worthy. I do not want to wipe with a cloths stained with someone else’s urine or menstral blood. That’s a hard no. I’ll stay with paper on this one.

Yes, I have, and while I'm all for finding green alternatives to some of the waste we create, this is a big NO for me.

We used cloth diapers for both kids (in the 70's) and this is not too far from that. We kept dirty diapers in a diaper pail with a lid without any distasteful odors, why not pee rags? Some of my friends would keep a Lysol solution in the diaper pail or some other liquid but I did not find a need for that. Messy diapers were rinsed out in the commode before dumping in the diaper pail and when it came time to wash them, they were dumped from the pail to the washing machine without me having to touch them. Sometimes I would run the rinse cycle before the wash cycle when washing the diapers and of course I added bleach to the wash cycle.
Actually, if I did this, I would use a squirt bottle (like a ketchup bottle) to rinse off before using the cloth, and would use washcloths that you get at the dollar store for the cloths. That way you would have highly absorbent, cheap cloths that would be thick enough to keep your hands dry.

I have heard of this but my initial reaction was "why would anyone want to regress 50 years or so?"
i remember my mum talking about menstrual cloths back in the day that was bad enough without contemplating in this day and age.
Each to to their own but I don't think all that washing is a big enough saving to ditch toilet paper and sanitary products.

Toilet Paper dust? Please enlighten me. I have dark hard flooring in my bathroom - the amount of dust that loo paper creates is quite amazing especially if you have the recycled paper which seems less densely made somehow. The lint flying off it is easily visible.

Although, I’ve heard great things about bidets and would consider than option before washable turd rags. 😬 A family friend had a small handheld showerhead next to the toilet instead of installing a whole bidèt. Could be an easier and cheaper option since you use it with the exsisting toilet instead of installing a bidèt. I think it was just hooked up to the water from the sink next to the toilet.

Why do so many have to put others down for doing something different? Considering how disposable our society has become, I am rather intrigued by this idea. And really, how is it any different than cloth diapers? I had a diaper service when my DD was a baby. She used cloth prefolds for three of her six kids. If I recall correctly, the diaper pail she used had some kind of soak in it, so the diapers didn't end up with dried-on feces. She just dumped the entire pail directly into the washer. And yeah, sometimes the diapers didn't come out of the wash pristine. Didn't mean they weren't clean and sanitary. Sometimes the opinions I read here are saddening.
