Congratulations on 20 years! That’s a huge accomplishment. I get your frustration. But it does look like apples and oranges. But I get your frustration at the lack of acknowledgement.

Of course it is a big deal - 20 years is a long time!
I see that the party situations you mentioned were related to people leaving the company. Perhaps it just hasn't occurred to anyone that milestones with the company should be celebrated as well - which they should!!
I totally validate & agree with you - you should receive recognition for your dedication to the company.

I'll validate you.
It is ridiculous not to validate and encourage employees. The best way to keep good employees is to make sure that they feel like they are appreciated. It is HUGE. It is the biggest gripe I hear today.
20 years is a big fat deal, but 20 years of not feeling appreciated is worse. Getting a week off or a lunch in your honor would be a good start.
I'm sorry you aren't feeling appreciated. It's like throwing a birthday party for yourself, though. Everyone is like WTF? I wish you worked in a bigger office and someone would see that.

I get it! At my work place (small business), receptions are given for milestone years of service. Well, for everyone but me it seems. When I hit the 5 year mark another employee had just hit his 10. They planned a big reception and we were taken out for a staff lunch. Receptions are a common thing here and there had been a couple of others while I had been here the first 5 years. As my anniversary approached, honestly, I wasn't looking forward to being the center of attention at a reception. But, as it turned out, I didn't have to worry because there wasn't one! There was a staff lunch but it felt kinda like....well this is what we normally do so we'll go ahead. It's hard to explain. I just felt SO unappreciated! It was just odd. Anyway, there are many other perks to my job that I wouldn't get anywhere else so I let it go.
Congratulations on your 20 years!!!

20 years is awesome!!! I reach 20 years at my job next April...
It sucks you weren't acknowledged.. we get our face on the slide show each quarter and we have a website we can pick something from based on yrs worked... we also get a dinner with supervisor n significant other..
But I work for a pretty big company...
Maybe start planning the 5 yr milestones now and by the time you reach 25 n 30 it will standard practice...

Maybe not a party, but I think you should be recognized for 20 years. I say shame on them for not recognizing a long time employee and their loyalty.
My company you can pick a gift or a small monetary gift for “monumental” years... 5,10,15,20, etc. The value of the gifts increases
At 15 years you get to go to a luncheon. For 20 and 25 years of service there is a dinner. And then over 30, I think you can go to the dinner annually.
These days 5 years seems to be considered a long term employee. My mother had 50 years in banking and then retired. After a year of retirement she decided to go back part time. They just gave her a party and gift for 55 years of service. That many years at one employer is not very common anymore.

Are you sure that this is really the issue with what you are doing and where you are working? 20 years is a long time but if you are happy doing what you are doing and satisfied with the progress you have made in your career, why question too deeply if leads to dissatisfaction? While 20 years is a big milestone, maybe your company has no policy for recognition of years of service. Address the issue with you HR/Boss/supervisor and see what can be done. OR, just bring a cake and celebrate the 20 years with your coworkers--it will definitely remind them that you have been there for a long time and celebrate with you.

Congratulations on 20 years!
We have a high turnover, so they do recognize people who stay. Actually, once you are at your second year you are considered a veteran at our job! We get a pin for one completed year. Then at 5 years we got a gold ring with diamonds and little jewels. Then at 10 years you give back the ring and they replace the jewels with bigger ones. They do it again at 20 years. I have my 10 year ring. They give you the ring at an award ceremony.

While 20 years is a big milestone, maybe your company has no policy for recognition of years of service. I was thinking about this yesterday; I'm pretty sure my company doesn't have ANY policy for anything like this at all. We used to get a card with $$ on our birthdays, but they did away with that a couple years ago. Perhaps larger 'corporate' companies are better at this type of thing than smaller, mom/pop type companies.
