See, I don't think this qualifies as 'genius'.... it's a great idea, just not 'genius' to me. SOrt of like 'awesome'-- I think "genius" and "awesome" get overused.

Make sure you have a sharp knife if you attempt this. I tried it with one of my not so sharp knives and it didn't work. I just got smushed cherry tomatoes.

I am going to have to try this. I cut grape/cherry tomatoes all the time. I agree that you need a sharp knife but he also said to use a serrated knife. I always use a serrated knife when I am cutting the tomatoes in half because it is easier.........at least for me it is easier.

I learned this trick from Rachael Ray at some point, but for some reason never thought to try it on grapes. I tend to use two plastic lids that are the same size, like this. The edges of the lid keep the little things from sliding around or popping out the side. Hmmmm...serrated knife? That doesn't shred them? I use a sharp knife when cutting mine, but never considered the serrated knife. Am I missing something? I use a sharp serrated knife for tomatoes and it's a snap! Much easier for me than anything else I've tried. I can cut super-thin slices with one, too, and I have poor knife skills, lol.

I think a sharp serrated knife works much better than a flat blade. My FIL gave us a very inexpensive large serrated knife 20 years ago and that thing still cuts like "butter" through bread, tomatoes, grapes, etc. You have to use a gentle back and forth sawing motion like the guy in the video does.

I have a dedicated tomato knife that was given to me - sharp serrated blade and ending in a sort of half circle at the tip to help you pick up the slices

I'll try it. I usually just wash and toss a bunch of cherry tomatoes in salad being too lazy to cut them in half. Should work for olives too! Too bad it wouldn't work for cherries, darn pits. Need a new cherry pitter too.

My grands, parents, siblings have dedicated thin tomato knives (no circle though). It has taken years to train DH to not use it on other things. I'm going to try the two lid trick!

I'll try this on the 23rd when I have to slice lots of grapes for a salad for 25 folks. I'll report back on how it went.
We also have a dedicated tomato knife--curved blade and serrated cutting blade. Love it!!

The pomegranate guy was even more genius. I have only attempted a pomegranate once. It was really good but it took so long to get the seeds out I decided it wasn't worth the time no matter how good they tasted. He was so excited about how easy it was to get the things out of the pomegranate he made me want to give it a try again.
