I fixed the Oprah link in my post - it is from her magazine.

I used to live and work in that town. It’s mostly white, middle class, church going Republicans. In fact it often features in those top 10 ‘best towns to live in’ lists. Except obviously, if you’re black. The reality for people of color in the US totally sucks!

I saw this on the news and it just made me so mad and upset. As an aunt of biracial nephews and nieces, it is another sad statement of our society. I'm white as white can be and I'm very mad and upset too. It is so very effed up. My heart hurts for all of the people whose lives are at much greater risk due to the racism and hate they experience. I want to be part of the solution. Joining Standing Up for Racial Justice - SURJ, has been part of my action in that regard. I encourage you to see if you have a local branch. CORRECTION: SURJ stands for SHOWING UP FOR RACIAL JUSTICE.

I read that after he ran away, he cried. It broke my heart. My son is biracial and now that he is a teenager, a tall, athletic, teenager, I worry about him out in the world.

I used to live in Warren and still live in the area. This whole thing is screwed up yet doesn’t surprise me one bit. I also am not surprised that Warren police/prosecutors didn’t recommend to take away his access to a weapon at the time.

It breaks my heart that you have to have that additional worry, beyond what many parents think about. And it breaks my heart to look at the little Kindergarten students I work with, seeing their innocence and knowing that their future might include things that the student next to them will never know firsthand. And I look at the junior high students I work with, and see that some of them still have some naïveté about what things are like in the greater world - and I imagine what their parents might feel they have to teach them, that other parents don't. They aren't playing on a level field, and change is coming too slowly.

My heart breaks for this teen and his mom. I hope that man never gets to own a firearm again.

Because white women have been conditioned to believe black men are dangerous. This even includes young black males. Not all white women have been conditioned to believe this. Please, do not use the “not all white women” argument when you are discussing something regarding racism and discrimination. It centers white people in the narrative, and is generally dismissive of the argument being made.

My heart breaks for this teen and his mom. I hope that man never gets to own a firearm again. It would be awesome if every racist had to give up their weapons. The PA road rage case comes to mind. After the election there was some discussion about the link between racist thought and mental illness. Here is a good article. It also covers how detrimental past racial violence and the last five years have been to the mental health of black citizens. It's a really informative read. "This idea began to reverberate within the professional associations of behavioral and social scientists, leading Pouissant and others to petition the American Psychiatric Association to consider racism a mental illness. The APA rejected the petition, however, arguing that mental illnesses must deviate from normal behavior. Citing research showing prejudiced attitudes were relatively common among white Americans, the APA in effect argued that racism was normal, and not a fringe set of beliefs. Nevertheless, that same year the final report of the Joint Commission on Mental Health of Children acknowledged that racism was, for some, America's "number one public health problem." www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/monkey-cage/wp/2016/06/07/how-racism-came-to-be-called-a-mental-illness-and-why-thats-a-problem/

Zeigler has previous convictions of discharging a weapon during a road rage incident. Police officers and firefighters seem to automatically be given the hero badge no matter how undeserving they are as a whole or as individuals. I think his wife should also be charged. And this would be a great opportunity for America to say to its black citizens "Your tax dollars afford you some minimum protections" by convicting them both. Found Guilty
No charges for the wife though. I agree with mom that since this isn't the first time he's been convicted of firing a weapon inappropriately, the possible sentence doesn't really match the offense.
