At my library you can file something saying you returned the book and they will stop the fine from getting bigger and put a 3(?) month hold on charges while they search for the book.
If if they find the book, they will reverse the charges. If they don’t, then it starts up again at the same spot until you pay for the book.
I’ve done it twice, one was found, the other was not.
