We currently have a red cherry laminate in the kitchen and entryway and a medium pile beige carpet on the remainder of the main floor of the house. We chose the laminate because we had a big dog and didn't think wood would hold up well. We knew we would replace the flooring when we no longer had a dog and sadly, that day has come.
The economical choice would be to extend the cherry laminate throughout the whole first floor but it's very red/orange, it shows every speck of dirt and dust and honestly, I don't love the laminate even though it's high end. DH and I both love the look of gray hardwood. We need to consider resale value because we are thinking about selling this house in the next 5-6 years. (Not positive that is going to happen, it's just something we're thinking about.)

I think it can look really nice but I wonder if it will look very dated in 5 years. I know certain wood tones come and go in popularity, but to me grey is a very specific style. I dunno. But I bet it would be gorgeous! Do you know any realtors in the area you could ask?

Not hardwood, but I went with a grey hardwood look for my bathroom. Everyone loves it.

I agree with the concern that it will likely look dated compared to other finishes. More than that, to me it has the look that would look nice while brand new but then go to looking “old” and kind of worn out and dingy quickly. I’ve never really liked the gray flooring though so do what YOU like. ETA: re reading, I see the choice is between the gray and extending the cherry. I don’t like cherry finish at all so I should just bow Out of this probably!!! I like all other wood finished pretty Much - I’m really not *that* picky! Lol

i am redoing my house now. i was trying to steer away from a floor that was too grey or too light. my walls will be grey. i didn't want too much grey.
so for me grey flooring would be a no. i am all for you having what YOU like in YOUR house, but if you are thinking of resale, you might not want grey.
replacing the flooring (wood or tile) is pretty expensive, so that might be a deal breaker if i was looking at your house.
idk where you live, but around here wood look tile is being used like crazy, and i really like it. you can get it in lots of colors and styles.
how much flooring are we talking about?

I have grey tile in my bathroom that looks like wood planks. I love it, but then I love grey too!

I think, like most things, it's a trend. Granite, glass tile, oil rubbed bronze finish, taupe, modern farm house, industrial farmhouse, etc.

I own a flooring store & grey is what's hot right now. Seems like everyone is looking for a specific color grey when they walk in.
Oh and Flec carpeting is all the rage right now. Doesn't matter the color but everyone wants flec. 10 years you couldn't give it away...lol

I replaced my low-end laminate with a mid-grade grey laminate. I love it! Gives my LR/K a very cottagey feel. Which is what I wanted. Not planning on selling, but highly recommend the grey.

Well ... we put gray wood planks on the vaulted ceiling in our family/dining room. (Not smooth - it's reclaimed wood so more rough and rustic.) We like the way it looks but know it will be dated eventually. We have a neutral-toned dark hardwood on the floor.

I like it, especially the gray/brown wood look tile. But I do think it's going to be something that looks VERY dated in a few years.

We are putting in new floors, and originally chose a gray finish. We love the way it looks. But we then both realized it would look dated too quickly, and went with a more ashy brown.

Love it. Have not seen any in person but see it on HGTV a lot. Gray is such a beautiful neutral.

i work in real estate and it is very trendy right now... i do like it though. can be very "beachy" looking or more "contemporary" depending on how you decorate around it. in several years, yup, it will likely look dated. i do not like cherry though... so not sure what i would do. what about bite the bullet and get parquet floors - almost everyone has gotten rid of them so they should be be "on trend" any time now! (totally kidding, btw!)

I love a grayish wood floor - mine is brown but with a grayish cast.
Keep in mind that going from a warm cherry to anything with a cool shade like gray could make some other things in your home look off. When I moved into my home, the walls were a gold green and the kitchen cabinets and floor were a reddish oak. Once I painted the walls gray, everything else had to change. Just something to consider.

Funny thing is we replaced the berber in our old house with what was hot then, a frieze carpet, just before we moved almost 12 years ago. In the two months we lived with it I could already see wear tracks and can't remember the last time I saw it in a model home. Sarah*H, I wouldn't worry about the resale for flooring. It has never been the deal breaker for me and I'd put in what I like.

Grey is very trendy right now, and will look dated in a few years. But... that's how it goes. A few years ago, hand scraped floors were all the rage. And very dark floors before that. And cherry before that. And oak before that. And so on and so on.
I think you can minimize the "trendiness" by picking something that's a lighter grey with some warmer undertones and not "aggressively" grey - but like anything, it's eventually going to look of a certain era.
I wouldn't worry too much about resale, but I think if you're going to sell in 5-6 years, the majority of buyers would probably still prefer grey to cherry. Everything goes in cycles, of course, but I think most cherry flooring looks more formal than most people want these days (it tends to be high gloss, etc.) plus the colors can be harder to decorate around.

Anything you put down will eventually look dated. Install what makes you happy today. I happen to love gray and it is neutral enough you can put anything with it. jenjie I love your choice of flooring!

I don't personally care for it, but it's definitely on trend. I also suspect it will be a pretty dated look in a few years. If you want that feel but want something more classic, maybe a lighter, more ash-toned brown would suit you (as opposed to a golden brown or cherry brown). I also agree that if you switch from the cherry to gray, you will have some things look off or out of balance afterwards. Both the tone and the depth of color are going to be very different between cherry and gray.

I love grey wood flooring. Our living room/dining room and kitchen all have it. We get compliments on it all the time. I also like the grey weathered wood mixed in with the walnut brown, it's two toned and seems to go with everything. Red cherry is awful..our front room has the old flooring that we haven't changed yet. You are right, it shows every spec of dirt!

Gray is certainly trendy right now and it could end up very dated looking in a few years, but if you aren't certain you'll sell in 5-6 years, that's a long time to live with something you don't like so well. I personally don't care for gray (not a big fan of cherry either) so I would be turned off by gray flooring; also don't like 'greige' even more than I dislike gray. People would say our house is dated in its colors, but we still like it, and we aren't planning to move any time soon, so who cares.
I do think, as others said, you'll find a lot of other things look different against the gray, so you could end up changing more than just the flooring.

I really like it, it goes well with the kinds of colors I decorate with (blues, greens, cool browns). We're putting wood look vinyl plank in the house we're buying. Probably a light beige with gray tones or "greige" instead of pure silver gray though. The walls in half the house are a really nice gray already, and we will probably continue it into the other rooms. I'd rather have the floors coordinate with the walls than match. And if we get sick of the floors, the rooms are small, we can put down area rugs.

I love the dark grey(s) "hardwood"(or similar type flooring), because it falls right into my home decor color palette. I also like a darker burgundy toned mahogany or black wood flooring, again because it matches my decor best.
Personally, I think home decor tastes are "to each, their own". What one loves, another may hate.
As far a re-sale. If I were a buyer, flooring colors and style(or cabinet and paint colors) wouldn't matter to me, because I would be expecting that some changes "home improvements", would be needed in order to make things my style. Personally, for me, if I were looking to buy, "NO home owner association, location, floor plan, and home size" would be my priorities, not colors or style of the flooring, walls, cabinets, etc...

I love it and we just put it in my bedroom. We are in Florida though and have a beach vibe in there. I have cherry hard wood in dining room and living room and hate it. Every speck of dust and strand of dog hair shows up and just never looks clean enough for me. Everything will go out of style eventually so get what you want. You can probably cover most of it up with area rugs later if you have to.

We just put wood-look porcelain tiles in our great room. We went with an ashy/warm tone and I LOVE it. It goes very well with the warm tones I already have, but if I ever want to go with more cool tones in my decorating it will work with that, too.
