I found out a few weeks ago that I'm heading to Australia and New Zealand to help my corporate office train consultants in a few markets. I finally got my work itinerary yesterday so it's time to start planning all the things.
I'm planning on extending a week (hoping for more!) past the time I'm working to experience a little bit of the area. Any suggestions on where I should go or what I should see?
I'm not sure just yet if I'll be alone or if DH will be able to fly in on the last day of my work portion and we'll explore together- I'm making a basic plan and then we'll check flights for him and make a decision.
It will be mid- November.
My workflow- 11/8 training in Perth. 11/9 is a day off. I'm not sure if they're planning adventures or if we'll sleep. ha 11/10 training in Perth 11/11 training in Brisbane 11/12 training in Christchurch 11/13 training in Auckland
and then I'm free!
We don't mind hopping flights and miiiight be able to squeeze 10 days in if the stars align.
Tell me what I need to know?

If you are planning on staying at the end of the work time, then I would probably stay in New Zealand. You could go down from Auckland to Rotorua, via the Waitomo glow worm area.

That's a perfect time to be in New Zealand. If I were you, I'd head down the west coast of the south Island. Stop at the glaciers - they're in a rain forest. It's bizarre. Keep going to Milford Sound and stay a few days in Te Anau. Eat lots of pies. Head over to Dunedin to see the penguins, then north to CCH again. If you've time to swing by Mt. Cook, do that, too.
Enjoy!

No advice but can't read and run. Congratulations! It's been fun lurking and reading about your career throughout the years. Can't wait to read a summary of your trip, you've got a great voice.

The very first thing you have to do is swing through Georgia and pick me up! After that, who knows?

I would stay in new zealand.. and go north of aukland to bay of islands for a few days, then down to rotarua, the mud pots and the glow worm caves.., and explore around aukland. it is a long way to the south island for a week. you could also take a quick trip down to wellington.. see the museums (the city museum is excellent--my son just saw an exhibit on WW1 in one museum there..) and fly home. and see the Kauri museum.. and the trees.. really really neat.

New Zealand is stunning. We started in Auckland, drive to Rotarua for a couple of days, flew to Christchurch in the South Island to pick up an RV and toured some sights including the Franz Joseph glacier. We then flew back to Wellington - the museum is seriously amazing. The scenery is absolutely spectacular, the people are very friendly and the food is great. We were there during August (winter) so it was pretty cold but you’ll be there during the summer so you’ll have more options.

That flight there would kill me...seriously...I'd love to go there but I know I would not last on a plane that long

I'm sad you're not coming to Sydney. On your day off in Perth, go across to Rottnest Island and visit the quokkas. Cute little things. As for extending your trip, New Zealand is gorgeous. They filmed Lord of the Rings there, and you can do special tours that cover all the filming locations. I'll let some Kiwis give you more advice.

no idea about the geography, but having just watched an incredible tv show on the Great Barrier Reef, I would totally try to figure out how to work in some snorkeling. (that is, if I wasn't too afraid of box jellyfish and the other poisonous creatures, of which Australia seems to have a preponderance...) OR, totally geeky, but I'd go to New Zealand and do some sort of tourism related to LOTR. Can you tour a hobbit village, or stay in a hobbit house, maybe?

Australia is huge, so popping here and there in the limited time you have, it probably makes more sense time wise to find stuff to do in the places where you already will be. Just saying that cause people forget its basically the same size as the United States. Its a 5 hour flight between Perth and the east coast (think NY>LA distance).
NZ is not as big a country, so the options might be to spend more time and see far more there, maybe. I really like New Zealand overall, Queenstown area is my favorite part to visit. Breathtaking.

Gosh that is a crazy schedule with all the flights. As has been posted above, seeing as your last 2 days are in New Zealand I would stay there rather than fly back to Australia. If you really want to do Aus, fly from Auckland to Sydney (about 3 hour flight) and spend a few days there (or all your time) and you could then fly north to Great Barrier Reef. It isn't the greatest time of year up there but seeing as you are here.... The issue then is having to fly back to Brisbane or Sydney to fly home. There will be a lot of flying!

I was grateful for the slower schedule this time. ha. Last year in Canada we did 9 flights in 4 days with just enough downtime for dinner each evening. it's crazy, but it's so fun! I may try to push it a little further out and spend some time in Australia too-- it's been my dream trip since I was tiny and the reality is I just don't know if I'll be able to prioritize it in the next few years. I'm hoping the empty day is a day off to explore some but I'm waiting to find out-- it may just be a day that isn't a big training group with more focused leadership training or something.

That flight there would kill me...seriously...I'd love to go there but I know I would not last on a plane that long I'm a little nervous about it, the longest flight I've done so far is 12 hours. It wasn't completely horrible but I absolutely could not sleep no matter what...i'm hoping this one isn't the same. I'm definitely going to splurge on an upgrade and a good seat, I can't handle being that close to strangers for that long. ugh. It looks like depending on which flights we end up booking it'll be between 30-35 hours of travel time w/layovers. Cripes.

I'm one of the only people on the planet that has never seen Lord of the rings! well, then, you can take all the movies with you, and they'll keep you occupied for those 30-35 hours of your traveling! LOL!! (just kidding-- but there's 7 movies, and the deluxe director's cut versions are probably all each at least 2.5 - 3 hours long... and if you watch some of the extra footage and special bonus content, you should be good for your return travel, too!)

You need to take in the vastness of Australia and you will be travelling across the whole country (Perth - Brisbane) and also time zones, which to me is the killer for jet lag.
You will be coming at a great time of the year weather wise when we will be heading into summer. After all the flying I would probably stay in New Zealand and enjoy some of their beautiful country.
Weatherwise to go to the Great Barrier Reef would not be the best time.

I believe they upgraded to those 'seats' that look like little cubbies.

Australia is my DREAM trip! My list would include Sydney (definitely a zoo visit to see and hold a Koala), Uluru to see the BIG red rock and hopefully, experience some Aboriginal culture and then Port Douglas and the Whitsunday islands for the beaches.....
If I had a month or more, I would love to visit Kangaroo island and drive on the Great Ocean Road too

I've never been to Australia but my sister used to live there for awhile. Steph, if seeing Australia was your dream trip since you were tiny I'd focus on that during this trip and make it a reality. If your DH can't join you, that's okay. Traveling solo is just as much fun-I did it last year and had a blast! Here's what I know from my sister-Queensland is gorgeous but Perth is less desirable. She lived in both places.
Extend your trip as much as you can. 1 week extra is good. 2 weeks extra is even better. You won't regret it, you are there already, and you've been wanting this your whole life. You deserve it! When your work part is over (plan all of this ahead of time, of course) hop a plane to whatever part of Australia you've been wanting to see the most. I would suggest: Sydney, Queensland, The Great Barrier Reef (see this now-the corral is dying so fast all over the planet, over 50% is gone all over the world-see it while you can), Ayres Rock?, check out trip advisor.com and things to do for ideas. Get a travel planning book for Australia (check your local library). I like Frommer's the best myself and the DK books are wonderful for photos. As far as traveling within the country to save time-fly. I don't know about Australia but flights within Europe (the continent) is very reasonable, around $100.00 Hopefully the same holds true for Australia.
Can you scuba dive or snorkel? Our seasons are reversed so if you are going in November it should be summer when you go. I wouldn't go there and miss a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I personally can't scuba dive but I love snorkeling. I think if I had a trip like this coming up I'd seriously consider local scuba diving lessons before the trip. Most places have them in local pools.
I'm so excited for you!!! Congratulations on the work trip and what a great opportunity.
This is kind of how my trip to Germany came about last year. I joined my mother for a trip to Poland to visit relatives. Then I added on 4 days in Poland for myself, and 16 days in Germany for myself, doing those parts solo. At first I thought I was adding on too much, but then I was so grateful for all of those additional days.

Melbourne and drive down the Great Ocean Road to the southernmost point of mainland Australia. It is simply gorgeous. A day down and a day back, with one more day in the city. You could do other day trips around Melbourne like seeing the penguins or go to Tasmania. (We also went to Sydney, the Blue Mountains and some time in Queensland but Melbourne and Tasmania were definitely my favorites.)

Well that goes without saying! Unfortunately Steph won't be anywhere within cooee of me. And Perth to Brisbane.... that's like San Diegeo to Boston! Only 3600km by plane. Steph ever since you posted ages ago about a workshop or seminar you did with young women, I have been wishing that you would come to Australia and run one that my DD and her friends could go to. Perhaps you need to extend your visit by about, oh, maybe a month? As for what to do with your free day in Perth, I agree with those who suggested Rottnest Island. There are some lovely beaches around Perth. But watch out for the sharks at Cottesloe beach! Just kidding, they're not that common there. It's probably worth heading to Freo as well (Fremantle).
