sleepingbooty Congrats, have great time celebrating. Mbappe's goal was out of this world. Anyone else wondering about the pitch invaders?

Fun final. We hosted 10 boys and their coach for an 8am viewing party. I lived hearing the cheers from the collective group. The best news is that my good friend won our soccer fundraising pool out of 70 know it all dads and we raised $1,100!

What a lovely time we had yesterday after the victory. What a cray-cray match too that perfectly represented the 2018 WC: VAR, a silly goal let through by the keeper, fighting spirit through offense, winning tactics by remaining calm, etc. Thoroughly enjoyed and what an honour to play against the Croatian team for the Cup. To see my country that has been through several terrorist attacks over the past few years spontaneously celebrate and go out into the streets without fear was very uplifting. I'm also touched by the youth of the team (second youngest ever to win the WC) and its representation of France's multiculturalism. It's a moment of optimism in a rather morose country that's culturally prone to pessimism, a moment of trusting the younger generation and of looking up to the future they represent, of admiring how our differences can be our strength, not the source of division. And Mbappé's gesture to give away his entire WC salary to a non-profit organisation that enables handicapped children to do sport is a beautiful reminder that there is something as enough even when you're 19, that giving back in one way or another is also part of being a citizen. Final bad singing video of this WC. Because the Bleus have danced and sung terribly through the entire tournament so I might as well share the post-victory madness too (guest starring the French president dabbing)...
Merci to all the lovely football/soccer Peas who made this such a lovely experience to share on here! Thank you to wellway for starting this thread and keeping it up to date as the tournament unfolded. Congrats finaledition for raising so much money (can I have a donut, pretty please?).

Sleepingbooty, let me know where I can get a victory tee shirt online once they start selling them. I wore my one from ‘98 yesterday and promised my son that I would get him his own if they won. We were just in France 2 weeks ago and he watched the game vs Argentina in a crowded public space - he was so bummed that we came home before the semifinals.

The Fédération Française de Football is the only official provider for Les Bleus merch. The 2018 victory T-shirts (but the website keeps crashing at the moment) are already available for pre-order from their website. They ship in two weeks' time.

Merci! I bought mine in France in 1998 but alas, I am back in the US now and can't do it for 2018.
I've visited France many times. Both times that I was there during a World Cup year, France has won. I've tweeted to Macron that he should probably invite me for a visit is 2022...

Woohoo, I was able to get into the site and order the shirts. They should get here in time for the start of school. I'm a French teacher and this gives me FOUR YEARS of bragging rights over the Spanish teachers.

I'll have to force my Spanish SO into his (and promise I won't send any pictures of him wearing it to his friends or family back in Spain) but I'll get our two-starred portrait taken even if it's a poor selfie!

¡TANGENT ALERT! Here I go, turning a football thread political: I’m nosy curious. Your husband is Catalan, right? Among Catalans from Spain who support independence, how does that affect national football team fandom?

My SO is Catalan, indeed. But he's in that odd no man's land of the Catalunya vs Spain fight: he's in favour of the European Union, overall not a separatist but has grown more and more weary with the unfair treatment from "Spain" towards Catalunya. I'm not sure he'll be a good representation of the type of Catalans you're wondering about.
Overall, I'd say that the hardcore independentists (who are mostly on the right, conservative side of the poltiical spectrum) tend to avoid these international competitions. Or they'll support another country altogether! The quit-yo-bullshit-Rajoy/powerful right wing folks who voted for independence in the illegal referendum last year because they've reached a breaking point but aren't actually seeking Catalunya's independence as much as a proper autonomy with equal rights and duties as the other regions of Spain (many of them being millenials like we are) tend not to experience the same kind of cognitive dissonance. They do like the Spanish team and were supporting them. Perhaps not as feverishly as the rest of Spain (especially the anti-Catalans who whistle and chant ugly things whenever Piqué plays for the national team). Piqué is a great example of this in-between position: he's an outspoken pro-independence Catalan but not of the older conservative kind so he does play in the national team.
It's confusing to an outsider until you're suddenly thrown into the reality of Catalan life and all the post-dictatorship hardships they've had and continue to endure. I'm just so thankful for the change of government in Spain right now and the clear symbolic signs they're sending towards Catalunya (and the rest of the country) such as moving Franco's remains (it's about time!) and the launch of the truth commission to investigate the crimes against humanity during the Franco era (it's about time! #bisrepetita). My SO was initially cheering for Spain in the WC but not blindly so. He had back-up teams and thoroughly enjoyed France's win last night (oh yeah, he partied alright). Now, his love for Barça is a different story altogether...

Fascinating. Thank you for the analysis. I suppose we could just simplify things, subtract nationalism from the equation, and distill team support down to which team sings on key. Ahem.
