A church put Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in a cage to protest the 'zero tolerance' policyBy Jessica Campisi and Saeed Ahmed, CNN Updated 4:15 PM ET, Tue July 3, 2018 (CNN)A church in Indianapolis has put up a display that shows the statues of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in a cage to protest the Trump administration's 'zero tolerance' policy. The nativity statues at the Christ Church Cathedral are enclosed in a chain link fence lined with barbed wire. It's meant to resemble an immigration detention center, the church said. The White House's "zero-tolerance" prosecution policy has resulted in the detention of families caught crossing illegally at the border. Members of the church say the journeys of immigrant families are similar to that of the Holy Family. Scripture says that Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus were homeless and fled to Egypt, where they were welcomed, said the church's dean and rector, Steve Carlsen. From EJ Dionne at the Washington Post...
“The "both sides do it" ethic is so strong that we ignore the fact that Republicans have moved much farther to the right than Democrats have moved left. That's not a "partisan" view. It's what the data clearly show. My column: On political myths.”
The column., “The centrist heavenly chorus is off-key”
”We human beings cling to dogmas long after they’re disproved. We tend to believe things that make us feel better or remind of us of a past that we miss. This is certainly true of our assumptions about electoral politics.
Among the myths that can steer us off course in the Trump era, three are particularly popular.
First, that political polarization is primarily a product of how elites behave and not the result of real divisions in our country.
Second, that a vast group of party-loathing independents can be mobilized by anti-partisan messages.
Third, that Republicans and Democrats are becoming increasingly and equally extreme, so they should be scolded equally.
All these pious wishes are false, as Alan I. Abramowitz’s latest book, “The Great Alignment: Race, Party Transformation, and the Rise of Donald Trump,” makes clear. He provides a wealth of data in a compact package.
A political scientist at Emory University, Abramowitz is perhaps best known for the idea of “negative partisanship.” It explains a great deal about the fractious nature of our public sphere.
“Over the past two decades,” he writes, “the proportion of party supporters . . . who have strongly negative feelings toward the opposing party has risen sharply. A growing number of Americans have been voting against the opposing party rather than for their own.”
People rate their own side about the same as they used to. On a 100-degree “feeling thermometer,” Americans gave their own party a moderately warm 71 degrees in 1978 and 70 degrees in 2012.
But over the same years, their sentiments toward the opposing party turned ice-cold, plummeting from 47 degrees to 30 degrees. When politicians are nasty to the other side, they are mirroring the attitudes of their supporters. Polarization, in other words, is not just an elite thing. It reflects deeply held opinions among voters themselves.
Democrats draw “their strongest support from the groups with the most positive views of recent social and cultural changes.” Conversely, the GOP is strongest with groups having “the most negative views” of those changes.
In another important new book, “Standoff: How America Became Ungovernable,” the veteran political analyst Bill Schneider notes that while polarization did not begin with President Trump (it “has been going on for at least fifty years”), Trump “uses every issue, every policy, every tweet, to set one group of Americans against another.” Divisions around issues related to immigration, race and culture serve the president’s interests.
Ah, but because increasing numbers of Americans identify as independents, isn’t there an eager nonpartisan middle waiting to rescue us from all this?
Sorry, but no. As Abramowitz shows, most people who identify as independents lean toward one party or the other. When it comes to casting ballots, “leaning independents as well as strong and weak party identifiers are voting more along party lines than at any time in the past half century.”
Factoring out independents who tilt toward a party, “only about 12 percent of Americans have fallen into the ‘pure independent’ category, and these people are much less interested in politics and much less likely to vote than independent leaners.” Independents are plainly not some magical force that will call into being that centrist third party that looms so large in the imaginations of many pundits and fundraisers.
And the centrist heavenly chorus is off-key in another respect: While it sings mournful songs about the major parties becoming “extreme,” Abramowitz’s data make clear that the two sides are not equivalent. Republicans have moved significantly further to the right than Democrats have moved to the left.
Between 1972 and 2012, he notes, the proportion of Democrats who put themselves at the center of the ideological spectrum (or were unable to place themselves) dropped from 52 percent to 41 percent, an 11-point drop. In the same period, the comparable figures for Republicans were 44 percent and 22 percent, double the Democratic swing.
The upshot: The share of Democrats in the ideological middle is nearly twice that of Republicans.
Abramowitz doesn’t polemicize; he simply lays out the facts. But the story he tells suggests that the essential first step to getting past extremism and polarization is the defeat of today’s intemperate brand of Republicanism, embodied by the most intemperate president in our history.
Those who long for moderate and harmonious politics find it both comforting and convenient to cling to myths that allow them to keep their distance from charges of grubby “partisanship.” They’re likelier to get what they want by accepting the unpleasant but also undeniable realities of our moment.”
Some interesting thoughts on how independent are independents. And kind of goes with my belief there won’t be a third party anytime soon.

“Iran mocks Trump: Your tweets are driving up oil prices hill.cm/vWIDd2V”
From the article....
Iran's Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) governor on Thursday took a swipe at President Trump, asserting that the president and his tweets are responsible for driving up oil prices.
Hossein Kzempour Ardebili said in the wake of Trump's latest criticism of OPEC that the president's tweets "have driven the prices up by at least $10 per barrel."
"You are hammering on good guys in OPEC. You are actually discrediting them and undermining their sovereignty, we expect you to be more polite," Kazempour said, according to Bloomberg.
Kazempour's defense of OPEC came one day after Trump took to Twitter to attack the organization for its inaction on rising oil prices.“
And yet another example of how trump is #MAGA!

“Mueller hires more prosecutors to work on Trump-Russia probe: report hill.cm/b80ArgA”
From the article....
“Special Counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly hiring additional prosecutors to work on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Several current and former U.S. officials said Mueller is adding prosecutors from U.S. attorney's offices and the Justice Department headquarters, Bloomberg reported Thursday.
Officials added that this could be a sign that Mueller is prepared to step away from the probe and leave it in the hands of a larger team of prosecutors, officials said.
Mueller's team, currently composed of 17 federal prosecutors, is handling a large amount of casework associated with the year-long investigation into Russian meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. “
Doesn’t look like this will wrap anytime soon with or without Mueller.

Newsweek...
“THREE POACHERS EATEN BY LIONS AFTER BREAKING INTO GAME RESERVE TO HUNT RHINOS”
“A pride of lions ate a group of poachers after they broke into a game reserve earlier this week in South Africa to hunt rhinoceroses.
Three men were believed to have been eaten alive by the predators sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning after they entered the Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea to hunt rhinos, Nick Fox, the park’s owner, told Newsweek. After the incident, authorities recovered the remains of their parts, three pairs of shoes, wire cutters, high-powered hunting rifles fitted with silencers and a type of ax that is commonly used by poachers to remove rhino horns.”

That big balloon of trump our friends in the UK are planning in flying during his visit seems very appropriate after his latest twitter rant....
“Congress must pass smart, fast and reasonable Immigration Laws now. Law Enforcement at the Border is doing a great job, but the laws they are forced to work with are insane. When people, with or without children, enter our Country, they must be told to leave without our........”
“Country being forced to endure a long and costly trial. Tell the people “OUT,” and they must leave, just as they would if they were standing on your front lawn. Hiring thousands of “judges” does not work and is not acceptable - only Country in the World that does this!”
“Congress - FIX OUR INSANE IMMIGRATION LAWS NOW!”
trump ALWAYS talks about costs of things, except when it comes to his and his family’s extremely high cost of security then nothing.

Interesting.. From Caroline O...
“The founder of the #WalkAway Movement — an astroturfed campaign of Trump supporters pretending to be Dems leaving the party — gave an exclusive interview to Russian propaganda outlet RT this week.
...and much more, in my latest deep dive:“
From ARC Digital article....
“Pro-Trump & Russian-Linked Twitter Accounts Are Posing As Ex-Democrats In New Astroturfed Movement”
As pundits, politicians, and other Very Serious People spent last weekend admonishing “the left” for not being civil enough in their approach to pushing back against the Trump administration’s cruel policy of forcibly separating immigrant children from their parents, a peculiar and carefully crafted narrative began to take shape on social media. A closer look at this emerging narrative—a self-described “grassroots movement” of former Democrats fleeing the party—revealed an astroturfed campaign driven by pro-Trump Twitter users and amplified by automated and Russian-linked accounts.
The surge of tweets started on Saturday, June 23, when news broke that White House press secretary Sarah Sanders had been quietly asked to leave a restaurant in Lexington, VA, the night before. The social media campaign really took off the next day, after Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) said in a speech that administration officials who support Trump’s policies should expect to face pushback when they go out in public.
Most of the tweets were strikingly similar, and the vast majority pushed a very familiar narrative. Using the hashtag #WalkAway and claiming to be former Democrats, social media users shared their stories of leaving the Democratic party after being turned off by the “hate” and “division” of “the left.” Many of them cited the incidents involving Sanders and Waters as examples of the “intolerance” and “bullying” that supposedly drove them to support Trump after years—in some cases, decades—of voting for Democrats.
If this sounds familiar, there’s good reason for that—it very much echoes the “civility” debate playing out right now among the Very Important Thinkers and on the opinion pages of the Very Serious Newspapers. The basic narrative is one that we’ve heard countless times before, but this time it’s being exploited by a new cast of characters, and, at least in some cases, with the intent to deceive.
The primary functional goal of an astroturfed campaign like this one is to manipulate public opinion by gaming online algorithms to amplify certain content and push it onto people’s social media feeds and to the top of search engine results.
The high volume of tweets associated with this campaign is also indicative of an effort to drown out real, reasoned debate between humans and replace it with content that pushes fringe or extreme viewpoints into the mainstream, ultimately hijacking and derailing public discourse. This particular psychological operation also aimed to use issues like race and sexual orientation to widen existing divides and promote infighting within the progressive movement.”
There is more to the article but still can’t link stuff. The article is attached to the tweet above if you want to read the rest of it. But the last 2 paragraphs just about sums up how social media is being “used” to form opinions.

Because they all took campaign money from the Russians, or from the NRA who got a lot of Russian money. I think now that Mueller has access to the NRA money trail, we will find a lot of Republicans are beholden to Russia. I wonder if dt is going to ask for sanctuary in his private meeting with Putin, if he gets indicted?
