I don’t think flashy clothes indicates that you’re a big spender. At least not in my case.
My friends are both extremely frugal shoppers but they think looking flashy makes you look wealthy so they are always dressed up when we go out. Whenever we have ladies shopping trips over the border we have to declare how much we spent for the day when we return. One of the border patrol officers was having fun with us and pointed at my friends and said I’m going to guess you ladies spent most of the total we gave him. They laughed and loved it. But nope, it’s never them. They’re the ones that have spent pennies.
I dress comfortably when I plan to shop all day and I’m always the one that has spent 10x more.

I feel like I get very good service in stores pretty much all of the time and I don't wear any jewelry these days.

They run your plates and get a credit check if you spend more than 5 minutes on the lot. That doesn't sound right...

When you hand them your drivers license for that test drive, they run the complete check on you. I know a couple of realtors who do the same thing.

I know a couple of realtors who do the same thing. How do they do that without your SS number? Plus, you're not supposed to run a credit check on anyone without their permission; and it would show up on their credit report as an inquiry.

This discussion reminds me of an episode of The Cosby Show. He was looking for a new car and he dressed down. He thought if he walked in there looking like he didn't have money, he would get a better price. But then he ran into an acquaintance who completely spilled to the sales guy that he was a doctor and his wife a lawyer. It was pretty funny.
As for me, I have found that I get pretty good service no matter where I am. And I don't think it has anything to do with how I'm dressed. I think it has to do with how I treat salespeople. I ask for their help. I listen to their recommendations. I treat them as professionals. And I am very clear about what I'm looking for and what I have to spend.

I was just going to post my Tiffany & Co story. My friend and I were just in Chicago for the weekend. We were in our running clothes and had just walked about ten miles around the city. Neither one of us had jewelry on. Our hair was in ponytails and we had been out on a pretty hot morning (so not looking, or possibly smelling completely fresh!). They treated us like we were the best dressed people in the place. And my friend bought a $600 necklace for herself for her birthday. Tiffany and Louis Vuitton have given me, hands down, the best service. Every time we are in either store or order online, they have treated me (and DH) like there were no other customers waiting and like we were purchasing a million bucks worth. When ordering online from either place, DH always gets a follow up phone call making sure he found what he needed, confirming what he wants written on the card, delivery day info, etc. While we were in Montreal last week, I stopped by LV to get them to look at my cell phone case. It was wearing more than I thought it should (loose threads and the case would never close all the way) so I stopped in to ask if this was normal. I've had the phone case for a year this month (bought in Las Vegas), so I wasn't really expecting anything to be done. They assured me it was not wearing correctly and exchanged it for me - on the spot. No questions. This was last Tuesday. I got a call on Friday from the Sales lady at the Las Vegas store - apologizing that it had not held up and asking if I was happy with how the Montreal store had handled my issue. SaveSaveSaveSave

At that point we had only given him a drivers license to test drive the car.” At the Honda dealer, the salesman pulled up our account there, and told us that we could not get the same rate on the truck we wanted as we have on our car. We didn’t give him permission for that, and we didn’t buy the truck.

I always underdress when going to buy a car. Flashy jewelry will only make you pay more. They run your plates and get a credit check if you spend more than 5 minutes on the lot. They never do a credit check on me, cause I won't supply any information to a car dealer until I've committed to purchasing the car at MY price and only then once we're in the finance office doing paperwork. They are not allowed to photo copy my license for a test drive, either. Car salespeople HATE me. My norm is 15 mins from the time I enter the lot to the time they agree to my price or I leave! I give them a few extra minutes if I need to test drive. I've been offered jobs while buying cars in the past.

I agree that flashy clothes don't signal that you are a big spender. But it does indicate that you do spend, and some retail associates don't know any better than to only worry about those that they think will buy at the moment. And retailers that don't teach their staff that all people in their business is a potential customer are shooting themselves in the foot. It costs exactly ZERO to treat everyone in your place of business like the best customer. And that type of service can and does get noticed and creates customers. Maybe not today, but when they are ready to purchase, they will remember and they will tell others about the great service they received.

I asked dh and he says his brother has never ever mentioned anything like that and it sounds pretty sketchy.

SaveSaveSaveSave Do you have the LV phone case. I saw it online and was underwhelmed by it. I liked it but it looked heavy to me. I find LV in Hawaii to be the nicest people ever and the ones in Vancouver awful. I was looked at a Keepall and she decided I wasn’t dressed suitably enough. I contacted the company about her and she is no longer there. I had a nice SA on the Big Island but since they closed the store I just buy off the website. I hate dealing with them in Vancouver so much.

SaveSaveSaveSaveHands down I got the best service at Tiffany and Co. I went to NY last week-end and my goal was to go there and get something from there. I went to the store on 5th Avenue and wasn't dressed like anything special. I felt like I was the queen of Sheba, like I was the only person in there. They were all so kind and so happy. We walked away with four pieces. I didn't have time to get to LV, it was on my list.

I think that dressing better does get you better service in some stores, the clerks are more likely to pay attention to you. If you are dressed "trashy" people will be more inclined to dismiss you or treat you trashy.
First impressions are important, no matter what the context

Its easy to put my DL + bank card into the little pocket and go about my day. This is the on I have.

I feel like I have only been judged for what I was wearing at one store ever. (Well two, but the other one was Forever 21 so who cares?!) It was a high end furniture store & I happened to be dressed like a scrounge that day. The sales lady looked me up & down & proceeded to ignore me. Little does she know I could have written a check to buy the whole f'ing business, lol. (Just kidding, but you know what I mean.) I've never stepped foot in the place again and I've spent a shit ton on expensive furniture elsewhere since then. I had a similar experience shopping with young children. I was well able to afford to buy the furniture. DH worked second shift at the time, so I had to bring them. I could not get waited on.

My DH feels this way about clothes, I'm not completely sold on the idea. That said, I can be a chameleon when it comes to looks and I think that plays a bigger part of it in my life - i.e. I'm an ugly shrew but comb my hair, add some makeup and viola - pretty enough. When I am baseball capped, glasses on, no makeup I get worse service than if I am pretty-fied up. Even with a hat on if I am made-up I get better service. If I know there will be a salesman I will do my best to exploit my feminine appearance. Honestly, it saves me money. DH is a horrible negotiator. He isn't allowed to buy cars anymore. He can pick it out but then he leaves and I do the rest. Salesmen do not like this but he sucks and I got tired of paying way more than necessary because he hates confrontation. I'll gladly slap on some mascara and comb my hair to pay less each month on a car. But clothes and jewelry are not part of the overall package for me. I walk away when it comes to money and cars. I can pick them, but I am like your husband and I would just pay sticker price.

Never judge a book by its cover. My husband’s parents were living in Conrad mt. They were friends with one of the richest men in Montana. Well Bob, the rich guy decided his wife need a new flashy diamond ring to go with his big new flashy check. He came into town wearing his oil field clothes, dirty as a mud hen, driving that beat up pickup. Bob stopped at the first jewelry store was looking at those big old flashy diamonds. The salesman walk over to him and said you should leave , you can’t afford anything here. Bob stared at him, and quietly walked out and right into the next store, where he bought a necklace, earrings, bracelet and a broach to go with that flashy diamond ring. Total price ?$25,000. On the condition that the salesman go back to the other store and thank that first salesman. 25 grand is a pretty low price for all of that!
