I separate.
Whites (DH wears a white undershirt with all of his dress shirts for work. He has about 2.5 weeks worth so they get done every other week on small) Socks and underwear for us (small delicate setting) Light/grays Darks Jeans (I combine all of ours and wash as needed) Towels, bath and kitchen Sheets Boy 1 clothes Boy 2 clothes
When they wear white socks (ds2 more than ds1), I pull them out and add them to the whites. They have enough socks that a few pairs isn't going to make them go without. DS2 pretty much wears all black, gray, and blue and most of them are the same fabric so doing his in one load isn't a problem. DS1 wears cargo shorts all summer so I have encouraged him to wash those separately to keep the zippers and Velcro from ruining his shirts. He doesn't always so I don't even bother.
May seem like a lot of laundry but I don't have dedicated laundry days except for bedding. That gets done every Sunday. The rest I do as needed.

ds has a girlfriend who pretty much lives here. She does weird things with their laundry I moved some laundry they were doing yesterday and it got me thinking. And how does your son do their laundry? lol much the same way, without the towels though! He does sheets/towels separately, but clothing all gets washed together. I'm not a huge stickler for things like an occasional white in the lights or whatever. But I like sheets and towels washed in hot. Other ds has a new job and he now wears white dress shirts every day so after the investment he made in dress shirts i'm a little more conscious of what they're all doing with their laundry lol.

I am a seperator.
A load for:
jeans darks (combine with jeans if there are few jeans) whites (if there are any other than towels, but usually not.) towels/kitchen towels lights
My DS's do their own laundry, and they do a mini load for whites and then everything else is washed together.
I wonder if you DS girlfriend was taught to do fewer loads to help with water wastage and saving detergent?

The instructions to our washer said that jeans and towels can go together, so that's what I do. I didn't in the past, but everything comes out fine. My separating is towels and jeans, underwear and socks, and everything else. I don't separate whites because we don't wear that color much. I do keep a laundry basket in my closet for clothes that I want to wash and hang dry.

I separate. And separate. Loads are separated by: Whites (non bleach) Bleached whites, including towels, socks, etc Kitchen bleaches Darks Lights, including our sherts Khaki and Grey (DH wears those colors daily) Reds/Purples Brights Weird blues and greens Purple towels Handwashing
Now if there isn't a full load, I will wait until there is, or sometimes combine loads or just wait until we have enough for a load.
When my DH was in the military and when he was a LEO his uniforms were washed in their own load as well
When my children were babies, their clothes were washed separately.

I wash towels with my clothes. It never occurred to me not to. If I waited until I had enough towels for a load with only two people, it would be longer than I want the laundry to sit. The only thing I have to be careful of is if I'm doing mostly towels and older clothes and I have one thing in the load that I'd like to hang to dry. I've shrunk a few things by accident that way.

I’m the worse housewife ever but even I separate a little. Sheets go alone (otherwise stuff gets stuck in the corner of the fitted sheet and never dries) Whites and lights go together (if they’re not light enough to go with whites they go with darks) Darks go together Towels usually go together but I’ll occasionally toss one in with the darks to fill the load Swimsuits go in with towels Delicates get their own wash too (which includes dh’s work clothes) Okay, I am intrigued... what does your DH do to have delicate work clothes 🤔. In our house DH’s work clothes get their own load too, because they are too dirty and stinky to commingle with anything else. Kinda wish they had their own washer like another poster mentioned.

I wash sheets and towels together. I don't care if my sheets are "wrinkly". who cares! You sleep on them. My MIL isn't inspecting my sheets. lol. I also sleep with 2 huge dogs too so it's clear my "care" level is low.
Sometimes I'll wash light colored towels with whites too. I tend to soak all whites in oxi clean to get them brighter. Husband's work clothes are washed separate from my nicer stuff. I FINALLY got him to understand that he was making my cleaner clothes actually dirtier by washing them with his grubby stuff.
We wash about 3-4 loads a week so it's not a lot.

I separate. Whites (towels, socks, T-shirt’s), sheets (king so they get washed alone, casual lights (shorts, non-white tshirts, underwear), darks.
I for sure separate out anything white because I love to bleach my whites, especially towels and sheets.

For me it's all about the temperature of the water and dryer. Sheets are washed separately only because it's a full load - if it was only a single set, I'd wash with whites as they're all white. Towels (which are also all white), kitchen linens and other whites (which are pretty much athletic socks) are all washed together on hot with bleach when needed. The only other separating I do is delicates - which are washed on gentle cycle and low heat on the dryer. All of the colored clothes go together and I've never had an issue.

I basically separate two piles.. whites and darks. most the time the darks are done on delicate.. cause many of my clothes don't go in the dryer but get hung up to dry. I don't care if sheets and towels go in with clothes.

Lol, nothing fancy, he works in an office (actually he works from home half the time) his work clothes are mostly Dockers, polos, button down shirts. But he insists that his clothes "need" the delicate cycle to keep them from pilling/wearing out, seems like overkill to me but since a week's worth of work clothes is pretty much a full load anyhow I just do them together and on delicate, not worth trying to convince him it's overkill

I’ll dissent! I wash everything together. We don’t have a lot of ‘whites’ per say. I have no problem tossing everything into the wash that needs washed, as long as the load is reasonably sized so the machine can agitate properly. I haven't separated laundry in 20 years. Never had an issue.

Sheets and blanket get tossed in together. Nothing else would even fit in that load. Towels are washed separately since there are always 7 towels at once. Whites are separate and everything else can go together.

I do separate loads for towels, sheets (only because I do all at once and they make up their own load), lights, and darks. Bathing suits and undergarments I just put in with light/darks as appropriate. Occasionally I will mix light and darks if I just have a small load and nothing looks like it will bleed.
I have to say I was using Persil and recently decided it isn't getting my clothes clean enough. I changed back to Tide and am pleased. I also like the Tide scent.

i separate. whites, darks, colors. jeans and pants are separate from that. towels and sheets are not washed together because they dry at different speeds and heat settings.

for me:
Sheets and towels can go together
A random towel can go in with jeans/tee shirts..
My cleaning towels/rags have their own load.
Work clothes have their own.
Anything can go with undies if needed, towels or whatever.

Funny, this recently came up in my FB feed and I was surprised by how many people did not separate out whites. Don't get me wrong, I really don't care what you do. lol I just was surprised.
We are a family of 5 and generate a LOT of laundry daily. I do colors, whites, sheets and towels. All separate loads. I never have a problem filling my machine.

I’m trying to figure out why I find this thread the most interesting one today!
I separate. I’m a SHW & generally look to see what makes a load each morning.

Oh I separate! Towels, sheets/bedding, delicates, jeans, work out clothes, dh work clothes (slacks, button down shirts), clothes, undies/socks, bras.
I would maybe ask her why she doesn't separate and then let her know if she has any laundry questions to ask and you'd gladly help.

I separate by color, not towels/sheets from clothes. DD1 throws everything together and washes on cold, so her whites are grungy.

Sheets and towels can be washed together but typically I don’t.
Everything else is washed together. If there is something that might bleed (new red for ex), I’ll wash it with something old (dark towels maybe). Kids are responsible for their own clothes. Dh has garage towels that get washed separately too.

I use the color catchers. I do two loads of clothes on Sunday and two loads of clothes on Wednesday. I rarely wear white (I spill a lot). And I do wash sheets and towels together.

I do sheets alone. I do kitchen towels alone (who wants those washed with undies ) Everything else goes together. If I've waited a day or 2 too long, then jeans and towels get their own load (together, they are about the same weight).

I wash towels, sheets and jeans separately, but all colors wash together. We have very little white items, so I would never have a full load. I use a color catcher, if I think something might need it.
We do have a lot of workout clothes, so if the load of shirts and pants/shorts is big, I will separate out the undies/socks/bras and under tanks that I wear, and wash them in their own load.

I separate this way: bath towels (get bleached) sheets reds/purples whites/lights darks jeans (due to being a heavier material/heavy zippers so they don't damage more delicate stuff) kitchen towels (get bleached)
DH does his own work clothes because they're sweaty and gross DS does his own work clothes so he knows how to - they're greasy (fast food)

no. Just no. Sheets get washed with sheets only. towels with towels only. Then darks get their own load and lights get their own load. I don't have enough whites to give them their own load so they just go in with the lights.
Edited to add: I do wash jeans & cords in a separate load. In the winter, I wear 4-5 pairs a week, so that warrants its own load. And I use bleach on sheets, so one load a week AND I have a septic system. Guess I'm just living dangerously!
