To be honest, I don't follow Shimelle's style either (agree about the paper comment - can't bear to hide a perfectly good bit of paper under seven layers of equally great paper ) but I find that daily email chat gets me into the right frame of mind to get on and create something in my own way. I can watch her videos comfortably which is unusual, because I find most crafty video voices excruciating - and she gets to the point rather than spend ages preening her nails and stroking her paper.... I guess what I paid for all those years ago (yes, I was an early adopter) was a daily nudge to get on with it and a peek inside someone else's journal, even if it was to say "oooh no, not like that!". My Pinkfresh goodies arrived at the end of last week and I've put them - and all thoughts of Christmas - away for a couple of months. Yes, of course I'll still read here (can't be not knowing what's going on!) but I must not buy anything else for a December journal. Repeat...I must not buy anything else for a December Journal.

I just got my Merry Days order and the Thickers are disappointing. All the accents are more of a cool gold which is a nice change but the thickers are so yellowy. I hate clashing metallics! Oh no! I’m really fussy with gold too and I have some on order.

I ordered the Ali Express knock off die cuts that look to be partly Fa La La inspired and partly Snow and Cocoa. While they are a bit smaller than I was expecting I’m pleased with the purchase since I’m doing a 4x6 vertical album with Fa La La paper and washi. Super simple, although if I keep following this thread I will end up with all.the.things!

Super simple, although if I keep following this thread I will end up with all.the.things! I agree! This thread is dangerous. I need to stop buying stuff but a couple of the sneaks look really good. I typically won't buy a kit unless I feel like I will use enough to get my money's worth so I'm kinda hoping that I won't like enough to take the plunge.

I didn't pick up the gold trend until it had been really well established because my main reason for disliking gold is how yellow it seems to look. The golds most companies were going with weren't that yellowy gaudy color, so I was sucked in to at least tolerating it. Sadly, it would appear more companies (like Pinkfresh) are opting for the really ugly super yellow gold tones instead of the ones that most companies have been using in years past. I think this might be why I'm more drawn to silver, rose gold and copper foiling. They are harder to mess up. Rose gold can be really pink or closer to copper and copper can sometimes be really orange, but neither bother me as much as a really ugly overly yellow gold.

I'm all for a thread for JYC/DD or whatever you call your holiday season memory keeping. I don't do FB.
Shimelle's scrap style isn't mine but I often get ideas and inspiration from watching her create. I love that year after year, she consistently creates and delivers great DAILY content for JYC. She is one of the few crafters I'll sit and watch on video. (Jennifer McGuire & Laura Bassen are the others)
I cannot wait for the In a Creative Bubble / Feed Your Craft kit. Yay gingerbread!! I was going to order the FYC Gratitude kit - it has purple in it!!! - but decided to do Nettio Designs Fall Favorites project instead.

Finally taking a moment to give a more in-depth look of how JYC works for those who are in the fog (understandably so: the project is a little more secretive - likely just less popular on social media - than Ali's DD).
Quick reminder: this is the "original" December album project. You'll see things that will remind you of Ali's DD and that's because Ali was part of the JYC crowd. She ended up picking up the concept, putting a twist on it (document what happened for each day of December although that has come full circle now and Ali's right back where Shimelle started the project: document one story per day, no matter when it happened in December, for the whole month #alittlebitironic) and trademarking it.
Themes and subjects are the same year after year. Prompt PDF files don't change except for the layout and photos but Shimelle's take on them switches up (which is where the real value of this lifetime membership is). In essence, you get the same subjects touched upon BUT you'll notice that as Shimelle's December months go by, life changes (becoming a mother and such), and the world itself evolves, her approach and points of view to look into these recurring themes morph into different types of stories. This is the fun part of JYC.
1. Shimelle's JYC begins on December 1st and runs all the way to January 6. Yep, you'll have the pleasure of doing the actual 12 days of Christmas which end with Epiphany. You can cut off wherever you feel like it in the month. It doesn't matter. This is a project to get your creative juices flowing, not a follow-along (most people who do JYC buy their own product from wherever they want and whichever collections they feel like working with so you'll have far less folks with pages just like the teacher #notjudging #juststating). First prompt is the famous manifesto (sounds familiar, I'm sure).
2. Access to class materials is through Shimelle's forum. When you pay for a class, Shimelle sends an email to welcome you within 24h. If it's your first class, you will be given your username and password. You will be granted access to the locked subforums/subfora (for you Latin lovers out there) of the class(es) you paid for. Simple but not as clean and fancy as Ali's Inked-powered website. You'll find the prompt and video archives for the previous years on there as well.
3. Your dailly PDF file in your email inbox is a file of several pages with quite a bit typed out. If you've taken an Ali class before, you have a good idea of what these files look like. These don't change. They explain the theme, its importance during the holidays, how to start looking into it. For the past couple of years, Shimelle has accompanied the dailly prompts by videos of her album coming together (6x8 for 2017 and 6x12 for 2016). There were some videos for 2014 and 2015 as well but they're a little different in format. These daily videos vary in length but are usually around the 10 to 12-minute mark. As mentioned above, this is where JYC shines and sparks creativity, reflection and desire to get busy with one's December album/journal.
4. Shimelle might have a bit of a funky patchwork accent due to her upbringing in the US and then move to the UK when she was still young (you'll notice a mix of American and British pronounciation which is not at all unusual for someone who has lived that kind of life) but she's pleasant to listen to. No frequent vocal fry/creaky voice, no bad habits in terms of tutting or such, no dancing hands caressing products. She's straightforward and moves immediately into getting down and busy with her daily spread (no time spent cleaning stamps or fussing about which papers to use). You're not going to be wasting any time getting through these every day to get inspired (or just to peep into her album ). She will still have her usual sense of design pedagogy such as explaining other options for placement of embellishments and why these would be less pleasing to the eye, etc. This is really one of Shimelle's strong points (I really don't care my style is so far away from hers because I keep learning when I watch her make pages).
5. An example of how one particular prompt is explored: I'm using this to illustrate the interest of JYC, not to "give away" a prompt (and I'll purposefully choose a not-necessarily-super-appealing one). Consider this your amuse-bouche and possible gateway drug to JYC. Day 2's theme is how we approach counting down time until it's Christmas and whether it has changed over the years (or if it's just our own perception that has changed, to paraphrase Shimelle's own words). In 2016, with her son then reaching an age of being very verbal and communicative, she used this prompt to talk about the Elf on the Shelf in their house as well as her son's "toy shop" setup on their table at home. He apparently liked to play Santa's elf himself and was painting "toys" for Christmas. In 2017, she documented about how she bought her first roll of wrapping paper for Christmas that year and how it made her think of all the wrapping paper she remembers from her childhood (and, specifically, how her grandparents had Muppets wrapping paper for many years which she suspects they bought a huge stock of one year during the post-Christmas sales). This is what I mean by the prompts being different: the actual themes and PDF files don't change but Shimelle's use and illustration of them does. That's the magic!
6. Shimelle uses a mix of products and also some older things from her stash (she brings up stretching your embellishments as well). Last year's album was an old SC handbook from the Seven Paper era. She added scrappy stuff from a variety of lines like Crate Paper's Falala and Pebbles' Merry Merry. This isn't going to feel like a product push campaign (even though she uses some of her own lines and her December stamp set). This isn't going to be about this embellishment going right on that paper. This is really going to be about making you think about Christmas past and present, writing a little about it and getting it in an album.
7. Shimelle takes a couple of days off during these 37 days of documenting + making videos. That's all. She also has a catch-up prompt day. I'd rather give you all the details so you don't feel cheated if you join and realise that she's not making a video on Boxing Day so she can be with her family. Epiphany (January 6) is the final day and you'll get a video with the entire walk-through of her finished album.
8. This is a solid project with dedication and passion behind it. It's not your flashy in-the-face kind of material. The videos aren't lit like a pro YouTuber (but everything is very clear to see, no worries here). It's motivating and inspiring. It's not the trendiest or prettiest. Shimelle uses her own handwriting which isn't super fancy or on trend like Ali's. She works on the videos daily and often in the evening (artificial light). She doesn't use one line/one kit to keep continuity perfectly through the album (not to worry: she has an amazing eye for colours). I cheerfully call it: "Bah humble!"
I hope this has helped to clarify JYC to anyone trying to decide whether this is right for them or not. #ALLtheChristmasvibes

sleepingbooty Thank you for that super detailed post. It made me want to join JYC a lot more. I'm into the learning aspect of classes very much — I know some people use it more for visual inspiration, and don't get me wrong...that's a big part of it. But it sounds like Shimelle has done a really good job of doing a lot with the content. I might have to join now! It is somewhat of a bummer that the JYC forums aren't as frequented. I do wonder why Shimelle doesn't do more to advertise what JYC is all about. Even a little more transparency would be so helpful! Where is the link to the class? It looks like the one on her site is for a 2015 class. Is it the same?

Thank you so much for the succinct review. That's really helpful. Last year was the first year I did a true DD. JYC sounds like it might be a better approach than daily. Frankly, some of my days weren't all that interesting, so I like the idea of real story telling.

Okay, NOW I’m excited for my december project! Thank you sleepingbooty for the indepth look into JYC. Love your insight and analysis. I signed up. This was the first year I did not (and probably will not) purchase any AE product. Considered Paislee Press kit, but I have last year’s digital set from Lilypad and will use some of those pieces. Also waiting to see the IACB kit from FYC. I am not concerned that Shimelle’s style is different than mine – can certainly adapt it to what I like. From the feedback sounds like there is great inspiration with her videos and prompts. Looking forward to using my stash and playing with more papers and embellishments than I usually do. #nowIhaveallthechristmasvibes

My pleasure, ladies! There are some long-term JYC players among the Peas who have far more experience with the project than I do. joblackford is one of them and she can likely provide extra details on how JYC helps her create new journals with new perspectives year after year.

The other bonus of jyc is that Shimelle has a resource (which one year she sent daily in addition to the prompts) called In Focus which had great photography ideas, advice and tips. It must have been the year we were snowed in at home, for I remember having fun setting up bokeh shots with a friend who was staying with us at the time.
I have to say too (because I recognise such skills) that it's clear Shimelle is a professional educator. It makes a difference.

Well, I got the e-mail from KP with the kit looks, but I can't figure out how to add it here. Check your e-mail if you're on her newsletter list. There's also a Bah Humbug sneak on IG. She said they'll ship October 8th, too.

It seems like the KP images don't have letterpress cards like she's included in past years. I hope those are just missing from the images but still included. I was really looking forward to Jamaica's kit, but from that image the paper seems very basic and the stamp doesn't seem like anything innovative (I can't tell you how many stamp sets I already own with numbers and frames). Last year's kit had letterpress & stickers included so I'm hoping those just aren't pictured here...
None of the others stand out to me as must haves, but it's hard to tell from small photos (and possibly incomplete?).
So far though I'm leaning towards IACB from FYC or not picking up any additional supplies.

Thanks for the extensive review... I'm starting to get a little convinced! Although the dollar price in comparison to the pound price is really holding me back... but I know I shouldn't complain about this, I'm lucky this is a problem I rarely have with scrap supplies compared to all the internationals!

I like the Kelly Purkey kits. I was really dissapointed that Ali didn't offer many mini kits this year. Her main kit isn't usually my style, but I usually picked up a couple of the more modern mini kits. The Ashley Goldberg was my favourite. This year I don't really want a lot of red and am looking for more modern than classic so the one mini kit is out. The KP kits fill the mini kit hole for me. I like the FYC kits, but the Brandi one has too strong a style for me to mix in with other things and the other I mostly want journal cards and will just pick up some IACB printables instead.

HI all! I made a video showing Crate Paper's Merry Days for those that are anxiously awaiting this collection. Here is the link: youtu.be/_EdEHp3wIFkDefinitely using this to make my DD. I'll leave the video up for a week or so, but then I'm going to remove it as I didn't have a lot of time to make it and it's not anything special. I'm still a newbie at the YouTube stuff, I much prefer IG. sleepingbooty Hope that it is helpful!
