Have you seen the temps forecast for today especially in Spain and Portugal? They think they will be record breaking in the next few days. I've been up early for the last few weeks to walk the dog in a reasonable temp. I'm not a big fan of this type of heat, would never book a holiday to the Med during the summer, hoping everyone on the Med takes all the right precautions to stay safe.
In Switzerland the police have been asking dog owners to put shoes on their pets

I'd find those kind of temps unbearable. It's bad enough here in the 30's. We were in Fuerteventura last week and it was pretty hot there and you had to be very careful because of the constant breeze you get on the island. It gives one a false sense of how hot it actually was. I've had enough of it here now though. I just wish it would go down a few deg to make it more comfortable. I can't imagine having to go to work in the temps of Spain and Portugal.

Those temperatures are scary. There will be more fires. Most homes in Europe I believe still don't have air conditioning. I'm guessing there have been deaths linked to the heat, especially the elderly, and that will get worse. At least in the US in most places where it is that hot there is AC everywhere. Having grown up in England and briefly in France, I can't imagine these kinds of temperatures. I recall the summer of 1972 or 73 when we had a "heatwave," but those temps were only into the 80's. Climate change is very real and very scary IMO.

And I find that the older generation arent used to drinking a lot of water. It wasn’t ‘a thing’ when they were younger. My parents think they’ve drunk a lot if they’ve had 3 or 4 cups of tea in one day.

Never happened when she was young or middle aged!

lainey I bought a watermelon and a honeydew melon, took off the skins, then sliced and diced them. Put then in a covered dish in the fridge and told everyone to help themselves. It might be a way of getting something with a high water content into your Mum as its eating not drinking.

My parents are the opposite. The kettle is constantly on and they drink tea all day from the minute they wake up to about an hour before they go to bed. They might as well just have it on an intravenous drip! Neither of them would drink a glass of plain water unless their lives depended on it!!

My daughter flew to Spain for her birthday this morning . She said the heat as they departed the plane was like a punch in the face . It was hot in the plane and a passenger feinted and fell on top of my daughter's boyfriend bruising his nose - not the best start to their 4 day break! They are in Barcelona though a short walk from the beaches so they at least have the coastal breezes to help with the heat.

I was sitting my o'level exams and back then you weren't allowed to take a drink into the hall with you - I also had horrendous hay fever 😫 Amazed I passed them all!

We've been relatively lucky in Southern Germany. It has been hotter than usual, and for longer stretches, but so far we've only made it up to about 35°C (which is hot enough, especially for 3-4 days in a row). The thing I am finding most difficult is the nights - we are staying up in the mid-20s nearly all night, which makes sleep so hard. Looking ahead, we are not expecting a break in the run of over 30° days until next Friday, when it should be wonderfully cool 26° - which in most years we would consider to be a decent summer day!

And I find that the older generation arent used to drinking a lot of water. It wasn’t ‘a thing’ when they were younger. My parents think they’ve drunk a lot if they’ve had 3 or 4 cups of tea in one day. And they only have small glasses!! We use pint glasses for water and squash, and when we visit some older friends (their garden is where we keep our bees) they offer us these tiny little glasses. It's kind of sweet.

They're doing ok thanks gar. The rain we had the other weekend really helped (although the wind did blow two hives over, we managed to pick them up). It's all about the nectar flow...it slows down at this time of year anyway but if we can get a few more weeks out of the season that would be great. But on the whole, they've had a good year. Weirdly, the heat seems to make them calmer. If only it worked the same for us!

I can remember in Stockholm and Helsiniki it was unusually hot. In Stockholm after we did the walking street we hoped t go back down.I was so sick that first day from the heat. We didn't think it was that hot! We live in Arizona for heaven sakes! But it was the humidity. DH tried to open the window because it was so wierd, hoping to get a sea breeze at least. NO lol! He called down to the desk and they said they didn't have extra fans and apologized and brought us water. We felt bad too..It was mid June. Dh's dad was born in Stockholm. He went back to his room and slept. It's a different heat for sure! Be safe out there!

DH and I are heading to Europe in a couple of days and I've completely revised what is getting packed based on the weather reports. For part of the trip we will be at MIL's house in Greece. With no A/C. I did get a bit of a chuckle over the beer bottle shortage in Germany.

I thought it was bad when I was there in May (and it was bad according to the locals).. I can't even fathom when the real heat arrived.

I live just north of Barcelona and it's been hot, hot hot! We swim first thing then stay in with the air con on. It's 33deg c about 94 reg f , at the moment...its 7 pm. We do have sir con but our room is large but it does help. Our bedroom is fine at night. It is unusually warm, even the Spanish are complaining.

In Ireland it was quite pleasantly warm today. BIL, SIL and their kids are in Barcelona and their AC isn’t working. We were near Montpellier in late June and it was 30 most days, it was fine for cycling and swimming but not walking around. I’d hate to be in those hotspots now, there will be casualties.

I do recall the bans that year now that you mention it. That was our last summer in England, actually. I was a year behind you in school and did my o-levels the next summer at the English School of Paris. One memory I have of '76 is of standing outside our house in my bikini at about 10 pm at night as it was just getting dark. Oh to have the tiny little body I had back then, lol!

What does "squash" mean in that sentence? I can only think of squash the vegetable and squash the sport, neither of them requiring a glass.

Put a straw in her water. And tap cold water. Most older folks have a hard time with ice water. My husband’s mother left several glasses out filled with water to come to room temp. She didn’t like ice cold drinks.
