I love vintage books and have a few that I use to decorate with. I have a few sets of really old encyclopedias that are beautifully done in pastels. They are already packed up for my move because I just love the look of them. I figure if it makes a person happy, they should do it. That includes spine in, display only, or whatever brings someone joy. I will admit to feeling a little pain when I see the books with the ripped off covers, and that is just because I love books so much. If they were just old paperbacks, it wouldn’t be so bad, but I see old hardcovers that have been altered like this. Yes, the rustic look is cool, but it still bothers me a bit.
I also have some crafting books, but other than that, I now read via my electronic reader. I used to hit up my library’s book store that sells donated books and come home with bags of them. I would read them and redonate them back again. They sold most for a dime to a quarter each. If anyone needs books by the foot, check out their library’s fundraising bookstore.

In a previous house we had a wall that had white bookshelves built in on both sides of the fireplace. I wanted a pop of color on that wall so decorated with red books. Each side had 3 shelves about 4 or 5’ wide. On the left side I had the books on the top and bottom ones. On the right hand side I had the books in the middle shelf. I’d pick them up in random places and my friends were always looking for them for me too. It looked nice, I got a lot of compliments on it.

I guess I get it for staging purposes, but it wouldn't be my style. We have a huge bookshelf in the living room, but it's a large random assortment of books we actually read.
I'm a librarian and I use books all the time for decoration...and yes I cut them up! I have a old book with a clock face in it. This summer I made a cute small dollhouse from four books and I have a Christmas wreath made from book pages. I use book pages a lot in my card making. I'm always on the look out for such ideas. I have access to all the books I need because I use books that have pages torn out or have been damaged.

I don’t color coordinate stacks or rows of books. Looks nice, but having them grouped by category is more important to me. I do, however, have a weakness for old books and tuck them hither and yon. You have a very interesting looking house, I’d love to look around it
