If I had read this guy's review of the book, I wouldn't even be in this situation. Lesson learned!

I've been trying for years to finish The Husbands's Secret. I can't get past a few chapters and I'm about ready to just donate the book so I don't feel the need to keep going back to it.

I haven't read all of the replies yet, but I just had to give my 2 cents about this particular book. It's hands down one of the worst books I have ever read. I did soldier through and finished it. .. in the acknowledgements he thanked his editor (I think) and said that his first drafts were "comically bad"--I think the final draft was comically bad as well, so I would have hated to see the predecessors. I was on vacation last week and entertained my family with some particularly horrible paragraphs. It never got better. My mom had picked it, too, and deleted it based on what I read out loud. It's like the author knew nothing about people and normal human emotions and especially infant development. Anyway, to answer your question, most of the time I force myself to finish books even if I hate them. Lol. .. I'm going to have to read the whole thread to get some tips on putting it down and walking away. I'm so, so glad I didn't pay for that book though!!

Definitely not! And the kindle first/kindle unlimited books do seem to have a higher proportion of books that I don't finish.

Most of the time yes because I'm invested and need to know how it ends.

No way. If I’m not interested by page 100 I quit. Too many good books around to waste time on a bad one. I don’t buy books, I get them from the library so there is no I spent money on it guilt. I have found those Kindle First books to be mediocre at best. I don’t bother with them anymore.

I try to, but there are a few times I have not. Usually what I do is start skipping over parts to get to the end, if I want to know what happens...
So I enjoy 'light' reading.. like Nicholas Sparks.. the only 'deep' reading I like are stories like from WWII.. any kind, true, not true... or an autobiography, but I don't put those in deep reading anyways...but back to Nicholas Sparks.. I have read all of his past stuff, but one.. I can't ever ever get past the first 50 pages.. Two by Two.. I have tried and tried and I cannot get into it. Has anyone else read it? I even brought it to work to read at lunchtime but even then I can't seem to pick it up.

I usually finish. Only because sometimes I hate a book but then something happens towards the end that changes my perspective.
I can say that lately it's been easier for me to stop reading something I don't like BUT it's still not typical for me.

I used to feel obligated to finish a book, especially if it's purchased book. If it's a free book, kindle first or library, I have no problem stopping. I usually give it until 25% in and make my decision. However there are times when I've closed the book after the first few chapters.
One of my biggest pet peeves is no "quotation" marks for dialogue. Other deal-breakers besides a bad story are books that don't tell you who is talking (no she saids), not proper paragraphs, or just bad editing.

Nope, put it down and move on! There are so many good books to be read, it doesn't matter if I've gotten it for free or not. Me too. If a book is not satisfying after a chapter or 25 pages, I move on. And no guilty feelings. Too many good books calling my name. I just need to find them.

When I was younger, I was such a voracious reader that I finished everything. However, since I was spending proportionally more per physical book than I do now with all the freebies online, I no longer feel the guilt about wasting money if I give up on a book. If I realize that I’m searching for ANYTHING else to do other than finish a book, it’s time to chuck it.

nope, nope, nope. If I think a book isn't well-written, or it's not holding my interest, I have no qualms about quitting.
Why would you spend your time reading something you don't like, if reading is ostensibly supposed to be for pleasure??
eta: if it's a badly written book and I'm curious at all about how the story ends, I'll just look up the synopsis of the book online.

No. I give a book 100 pages to hook me. If I'm not enjoying it by then I stop and find a new book to read. Life's too short, don't waste time reading a bad book.

Depends on the book and situation, but generally no, I don’t force myself to keep reading. If I’m far enough into the book where I should be enjoying it and I’m not, I won’t finish reading it. If it’s the writing style it’s never going to get better, if it’s the storyline that’s also not going to change. I’ve read books in which I don’t like the character(s), but I keep reading because the character(s) were supposed to be very unlikable, which made the author an excellent writer. Because I really didn’t like the characters at all. If it’s part of a series, and I’ve enjoyed the first couple of books, then I will force myself to finish the current book and move onto the next one, but if I didn’t enjoy the next one either that would be it. I wouldn’t finish reading the next book or the rest of the series.

Like others it depends. If it's part of a series I will usually finish but if stand alone I will stop unless I've almost finished. I started a book the other day and just couldn't get into it. I just didn't like all the descriptions of things and the language of the book if that makes sense. I got it from the library and will just return it unread. I have so many other books that I want to read so I figured why bother. Not every book is for every reader.

Thank you I loved that article. I have no problem stopping a book. I also usually try and not pick up a new book unless I have time to read about 50 pages or so in one sitting. That helps me get hooked into the book and want to keep reading.

I used to, but lately I've decided I have better things to do. The other thing I've found is that if I try to force myself to read something I'm not enjoying I just don't read. It's better overall if I just quit and move on to something more enjoyable. That being said, I put a lot more effort into books I've purchased than books I get from the library or otherwise didn't pay for. Recently I quit reading two different library books after the first chapter because I wasn't feeling it.

No, my time is worth more. I just gave a stack of books to a friend that I had started and never finished. I don't read fiction though, so not sure I would say the same if I did.

It depends on the author. I like one series Ken Follett wrote. I think he became well know with his Pillars of the Earth series. I went almost half way through the first book in the series and gave up. It's like a 1000 page book too. The same story line kept repeating itself over and over and over......
I usually give up sooner. If I'm curious enough to see how it ends or just find some parts too boring to read, I will scan through pages. So yes, I finish the book, but don't read every word.

No! Life is too short. There are so many great books to read. Don't waste your time. Exactly! Life is too short and my list of books to read is wayyy to long! Move on! Sometimes I keep trying, for a few more pages thinking it will get better, then maybe a few more. Then I give up. It sucks since you spent good money on the book and perhaps heard good things about it. Usually if it's ok, I'll keep going and But if I'm struggling to the point of not even reading because it's I'm not enjoying it, then it's time to pick up something new.

No. If it is a book club book, I may skim some of the parts and then read the end so I can get more from the group's discussion. We've had very few books though that I didn't care for. Most books come from the library so I just return the book and move on.
