i read your post, fainted a bit and now have come to. you are brave! as much as Directv is bending us over, i can't imagine not having it. we have Netflix, Hulu and Amazon prime too (and admittedly don't have time to watch much of those) but i still can't imagine not having cable or satellite tv. FWIW - I have Netflix & Amazon Prime. I watch them over the Internet and have really excellent transmission. I've just never tried Hulu, so can't speak to that personally. i hate all the steps to access Netflix, etc I have them signed in to my laptop and my Kindle and only very rarely need to re-enter the password. that's the only way i can watch Netflix and Amazon stuff---on my desktop or iPad. i just click and it's there. it's fiddling with it on the tv that i hate. if it's just me watching tv, i will stick with Directv. if i want to use the other stuff, i use my devices. when i saw we hardly use the Netflix, etc., i mean on our regular TV.

Can you watch DirectTV Now on a smart tv or only devices?
We move soon and I so want to cut the cord!

I think today is the day I am going to pull the cord. I am paying $233 a month for Internet and cable. I have Netflix and DirectTV Now. I am nervous but it is something I need to do. Wish me luck! Are you with Cox? We are, and that's about what we pay. Outrageous!

So inquiring minds want to know: which channels are these? Every time I see one of these threads, I peek my nose in, get confused and overwhelmed, back out, and continue paying ridiculous fees for cable. Do you get the premiums like HBO, Showtime, Starz? Package or pay for each individually? Maybe you can stream these via Amazon, but not sure if it is with the same immediacy e.g. I want to watch Game of Thrones when it premiers, not the next day. Neflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu? These can be streamed as long as your tv has that function, right? Individual subscription cost for each, correct? Besides Roku, who else provides a similar service? Local channels only available through installation of an antenna? Seriously, I would pay someone to hold my hand and walk through this wilderness with me. Meeeee toooooo! We desperately want to cut cable but we like being able to watch the local news in the morning and night.

Can you watch DirectTV Now on a smart tv or only devices? We watched it on our tv when we had DirecTv last year. Same with Hulu Live and SlingTv. Being able to watch on devices is just a nice bonus for us.

Meeeee toooooo! We desperately want to cut cable but we like being able to watch the local news in the morning and night. Look into Hulu Live. We have it now and get all of our local news channels (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox local). The only thing we don't get on Hulu is PBS. For that we use the digital antenna.

PBS isn’t a problem. My Sesame Street addicted toddler can get fix via Amazon Prime so that’s ok! What about sports? Husband is worried about not being able to watch college football and NHL games.

I have no idea about NHL because we don't watch hockey. Maybe someone else can help you on that?

It has been a week and I am still alive. I went with Direct TV Now. I get all the channels I want including PBS. I also get my local channels without an antenna. I also found out I was paying $11 a month for my cable router. I got rid of the router and bought my own. I installed it myself too! The only issue I am having is learning the new remotes.

And wouldn't you know, it's the one network that my digital antenna cannot pick up either, even though I'm less than a half mile from their antenna. Go figure.

I think they cause just enough interference. That's a lot of "stuff" in the air in a small amount of space. Dontcha love my super technical terms?!?

I am so far behind that, like fashion, I am style and cool again. I have never had cable ( l o n g driveway-huge cost). We have only lived with antenna TV and then Netflix when became available. and then Prime with amazon. and now Hulu through daughter/college. My kids laugh because for a long time they didn't get some of the references kids in school would make from cable shows. But they did get many of the teachers' references from M*A*S*H, Dick Van Dyke, Lucy and the old reruns they used to like to watch.

We desperately want to cut cable but we like being able to watch the local news in the morning and night. We're using Playstation Vue for our TV and it includes all the local channels, no antenna needed. We didn't subscribe to any of the premium channels but I assume you can through Playstation or a device you need. Each one (Hulu, youtube tv, directv now, Playstation Vue, netflix) all have different monthly charges. Find the one that has the most channels you want at http://www.recode.net. I think you can watch some of these through a smart tv without a Roku box, Amazon fire stick or Apple TV, but I am uncertain.

I recently cut the cord also (about 6 months ago) and am very happy. I was also afraid I would miss things...and had no idea how to go about it, but I was determined to cut for the cost savings. I figured, if other ppl can figure it out, so could I. I have a few suggestions for the terrified 1) Choose 1 tv in your home to "practice" with. Do not cut direct TV at this point... just disconnect it from your TV. That way, if you are miserable, all you have to do is hook it back up-no harm no foul. 2) get an indoor antenna and a streaming device. I chose Roku, but there are several to choose from. 3) hook up the indoor antenna and the streaming device. 4) now see where you are. What are you getting between those two things, and what you may already subscribe to (ie netflix, prime etc) 5) decide what you still need as far as channels/programming to be happy. Look at the different streaming services (ie hulu live, direct tv now, fubo) I opted for Hulu Live, but as others have stated, there are several to chose from and most have a free trial. Experiment and get to the point where you are happy. 6) now you can repeat those steps for each TV you have left 7) cancel Direct TV or or bag the whole idea and hook your Direct TV back up. There is so much MORE programming to watch when you have streaming vs Direct TV. It is really amazing.

One other thing you might want to consider is choosing a service that has DVR like storage. DIRECTV has it but it is only 20 hours. I like to record shows so I can FF through the commercials. That is what I am struggling with now. I can FF through commercials but I am having trouble being able to do it just right with my Apple TV remote. I was a master of FF with Comcast and knew when to stop.
Good luck everyone!

I haven't had cable in probably 7-8 years now. We have an antennae that gets all the local channels. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime. We also have Kodi boxes but they are hit or miss if they work right.
Loosing cable made it so I don't watch it nearly as much which is a great thing!

Question - what is everyone doing to record shows? They do sell dvrs that you can use, if you would like. Many of the streaming services have a cloud dvr with their plans. Hulu live has 2 options, one included and one w/ additional hours of storage beyond the basic plan for an additional cost.

The real challenge I’ve found is watching local MLB games. Can’t do it legally without cable.
