just stopped eating meat and dairy It does help me to just NOT eat certain foods. Pepsi is on that list. I go down a sugar rabbit hole when I have it. Sugar in general is something I have been avoiding since July. I notice that my joints don't hurt when I'm off sugar. And fewer hot flashes. I only notice that, though, when I fall off the sugar wagon. Then, the joint pain and hot flashes return. A few years ago is when I lost the 40 pounds. It was when DS first had his bipolar symptoms. Looking back, I think I was able to control my eating starting then because it was something I *COULD* control, when someone I loved was so out of control. Are you taking care of yourself? Are you in that mindframe daily-- that you need to care for YOU in some way? I take a hot bath most nights. It wastes a lot of water, but it's soothing and sort of reaffirms that my well-being is important. Just a general theme in my life, and I try to look at food in that framework.

What motivates me? Why YOU jeremysgirl and, iirc, birukitty and zella and a few other peas who answered your thread about veganism/vegetarianism a few months back. I had been dithering about it for many months partly because the animal side and the environmental side but also because in my research I had seen so many success stories of people who had improved their health and lost weight that stopping eating meat and dairy seemed a no brainer to me. I couldn’t make the leap, though, as I was putting the obstacle of living with an carnivore in my way. Then I opened your thread and got involved and just stopped eating meat and dairy. In those few weeks my arthritis has improved to the extent I can close my hands, my knees no longer ache when I crouch down to pick something up (and I can get up and down under my own steam without hanging onto anything) my swollen ankles have gone down so I can now flex my feet and walk normally BUT I have also lost 13lb without being hungry, just by swopping a carnivore lifestyle for a plant based one and keeping an eye on what I’m eating as I know you can be vegan and still eat unhealthily. My DS2, who has health issues, has joined me and we share recipes and try out food on each other and his support is such a help. His wife doesn’t want to change and my husband (his dad) doesn’t want to change so we support each other. His health issues are improving too. So, thanks to you, jeremysgirl and other peas, you inspired and motivated me to turn my health around and I look forward to losing more weight and becoming as healthy as I can. <3 ETA, I’ve just re-read your op and my height and weight are pretty much the same as your own although I think I am much older than you. I was skinny till I hit my 30s but not too fat until my 50s and I have struggled with weight since then. I did the 5:2 fasting diet for about 2 years and loved it, got down to a suitable weight and then had the trauma of putting our dog through back surgery and watching him go downhill until I had to give the vet permission to let him go, I turned to comfort eating, and shortly after that my DIL had her second baby and I was looking after both children and could not focus on my own health. So I ballooned. That’s just a bit of background so you know where I’m coming from. This makes me so happy! I held back awhile because I wasn’t sure how DS and DIL who I live with would handle it. But it’s worked out fine. To continue in your path, besides Forks Over Knives, may I suggest Brand New Vegan www.brandnewvegan.com He’s got amazing recipes a wonderful personality and a great Facebook group. He keeps it positive and non judgmental. I can’t stress enough what this change has meant for me. Eating has become pure joy, where before it was fraught with such guilt, obsession, and physical pain and discomfort. I was addicted to candy at night. I would starve all day then gorge at dinner. Or I finally got to where I ate very little and the scale wouldn’t budge. It was so disheartening. I hated getting dressed. I hated shopping for clothes. When I look back I don’t know how I lived that way. At my highest weight I was 220. Now I’m 150. I hope to get to 135. But I’d be fine with where I’m at, I look and feel great! Sigh. It’s just so hard to keep that weight off-or to lose it. It’s a constant battle. Best of luck to all of those who are trying to lose weight(I would actually like to lose a bit more myself), and to everyone who is trying to eat healthy. It’s not an easy road.

I did buy a specific journal for weight loss and goals. I find setting goals and writing helps focus me. I know for myself, I have to keep my goals at the forefront or I lose track and slip back into bad habits. I do low carb combined with intermittent fasting. I’ve got the fasting down, but have started slipping up a bit with low carb. My body just doesn’t react well to carbs and I cannot lose without keeping my carbs pretty low. Good luck! What journal did you buy? Is it a specific brand? I follow trim healthy mama and love the plan, but have been having a hard time being consistent. They don’t require or even advocate Counting calories or keeping track of food (just follow the basic principles of the plan) but I think I need to get back to some kind of food tracking. Last night I uploaded pics from a wedding I went to last month. Yikes. I should print one out and keep it on my dashboard so that when I’m tempted to grab some junk food while out and about, I think twice. I just bought a cute blank journal from Target. I’m not sure if there is one available somewhere for weight loss specifically, but that would be cool!

The hardest part is getting started! I think I need the accountability of paying money and having someone weigh me, so I'm seeing a doctor. He has a meal plan that is perfectly manageable (so manageable that I have done almost the same thing by myself in the past), and he is monitoring other weight-loss influences like my thyroid and hormones. Once I started losing weight, I found it easier to keep going, especially when the clothing sizes started decreasing.

I love Phit n phat. I’ve been listening to podcasts since the beginning of the year and am down 75 pounds.
Her method makes total sense to me.
I’ve been loving all the new clothes I’ve bought.
