definitely do the monuments at dark - they are very cool -
and you have good advise on Metro - you can buy metro cards at the stations put money on, watch the balances and reload as you go. A car is a bother in DC, ds drives in DC, but he lives in the area - and knows where he is going!

Take one of the trolly tours too. Great way to see stuff. It will also take you to Arlington Cemetery.

We stayed in the Residence Inn (which is a Marriott property, not Hilton) in Dupont Circle recently - we loved having a little kitchen, and it was cheaper than most other hotels on Hotels.com. There are all kinds of restaurants and shops there, and public transport is easy (including to Georgetown - you can take a bus, or taxi/Uber is faster and cost efficient for 3 people).
